I agree they are both superbe. Although I am a fan of Dessay and I think she is wonderful in singing and performing this role, I had the chance of being in Paris and saw this performance with Jo, and I loved it. I saw Jo also in Lisbon some years ago in Lucia and she was great!

Ladies and Ladies, Dessay and Sumi are both great. The same production demanded the same gestures and role play. They did both very well. The recorded sound here is worse , but Sumi Jo has no fault for that. Congatulations to both Girls!

Normally her acting of arias does not impress me at all (which sucks cause her coloratura is so amazing) but I can't listen to any other performance of this. AMAZING!

I saw Sumi as Olympia @ LA Opera. Not only is she vocally perfect for the role, she can act the part better than other sopranos. Most sopranos sing the part with mild charm, but Sumi steps up the comedy. After all, Tales of Hoffman is comedy. Offenbach composed musical comedies for the Opera Comique. "Hoffman" had elements of drama and comedy but the Doll Olympia is a comic figure.

That's easy! It is the same productionm just different performance. Have a look at the current production of Hansel und Gretel at the Royal Opera House in London. Same production, but two different casts depending on which day. Also, there's a performance of Madama Butterfly that was at the English National Opera but is now in the US... again same production (i.e. same costume designers etc). Im completely sure. There are a lot of Olympia made by Dessay. It depends on the production. And she gave different aspects on each one. If you want a more innocent Olympia you should look up for another production. Anyway her Olympias are unique.

I have always thought that Jo's artistry has never shown well on the stage. Her talent usually comes across better in concert or even records. Youtube does her no favors when one is only a click away from Dessay's version(s). By comparison, Jo's acting seems grotesque. The voice of course holds up pretty well.

The thing is, Olympia isn't really about acting. She's about movement. If a singer can act wooden, then she can play Olympia, but the performance will be lacking unless she has the bodily control to really move like a machine.
