She is truly a global icon. She is smart, tenacious and graceful. I love her English. If only SE Asia had leaders like her. The non-violent approach she espouses is admirable. It is the right way. I am happy for the Burmese people. I hope they will be able to establish some form of democracy. Thanks to the US and other countries who have thrown their support to her release.
Hope she gives up on democracy but focus more on the better seeds for freedom and liberty and means establish rule of law not just democracy. Aung San Suu Kyi has unfortunately failed. She is very educated but not very smart. Just like the Dalai Lama, she clings to her ideals as an extremist and will not settle. She should have worked with the junta, instead of fighting a battle she could never win. Aung San Suu Kyi is just like the leaders India had in the past. They let the foreigners walk all over them. Those places are now called Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kashmir, Afghanistan, etc. Burma doesn't need any more damn sermons. Wake up.

The Myanmar junta wants peace more than Aung San Suu Kyi. They would love for everyone to be humble and subdued under their rule. It is Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters that have risen up against the government, instead of working with them. As for independence and peace, those two are incompatible. If a nation is to be independent, it is seeking independence from something else. By default, it is divided. With a "us and them" mentality, there is conflict. That is not peace.

It is very admirable of her to continue championing non-violence in the face of what the Burmese military regime has done to her country and its people. But her stance maybe playing into the hands of the regime by giving them more time to consolidate and tighten the grip on the power they already have.
The regime will wait her out (she is in ill health and very frail after all the years of being under house arrest) as they know when she goes, there will be nobody left to pick up the torch.

The reason the Burmese government are unable to make her "dissapear" is that she is incredibly popular with the vast majority of the Burmese population and is also the daughter of General Aung San, who is widely seen as the founder of modern Burma.

This is one incredibly brave woman. She's been under house arrest in Burma (and yes, I do say BURMA because Myanmar is what the narrow-minded, fascistic Burmese government call it) for years now. That's the ultimate paradox, if you ask me. The Burmese government can torture and execute thousands and thousands of their own people, but they're terrified of just one woman and they can't shut her up. Maybe because somewhere inside their screwed-up hearts, they know she's right.
Non-violence and peace are a very high and sophisticated weapons for fighting highly sophisticated people. You cant use it against a low-level criminal government like Burmese junta or the brutal China's CCP. They will just cut you up and sell your organs in a non-violent manner before you even blink your eye.

To fire a gun or launch a missile takes only a few second of primitive thought, to confront your 'enemy' round a table and enter a dialogue with him to resolve the conflict using non violent means takes hours of careful thought, planning and most of all, compromise.

The only way to change Burma is with extreme violence. Get rid of the current leaders through dialogue and appeals to reason...lol. I appreciate the idea but the real world doesn't care about compassion or non-violence. It does take bravery of a sort to really have her position though, she isn't intimidated by the thugs. I would love to holiday in Burma one day.

She is truly a global icon. She is smart, tenacious and graceful. I love her English. If only SE Asia had leaders like her. The non-violent approach she espouses is admirable. It is the right way. I am happy for the Burmese people. I hope they will be able to establish some form of democracy. Thanks to the US and other countries who have thrown their support to her release.

Aung San Suu Kyi has unfortunately failed. She is very educated but not very smart. Just like the Dalai Lama, she clings to her ideals as an extremist and will not settle. She should have worked with the junta, instead of fighting a battle she could never win. Aung San Suu Kyi is just like the leaders India had in the past. They let the foreigners walk all over them. The Myanmar junta wants peace more than Aung San Suu Kyi. They would love for everyone to be humble and subdued under their rule. It is Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters that have risen up against the government, instead of working with them. As for independence and peace, those two are incompatible. If a nation is to be independent, it is seeking independence from something else. By default, it is divided. With a "us and them" mentality, there is conflict. That is not peace.

It is very admirable of her to continue championing non-violence in the face of what the Burmese military regime has done to her country and its people. But her stance maybe playing into the hands of the regime by giving them more time to consolidate and tighten the grip on the power they already have.
The regime will wait her out (she is in ill health and very frail after all the years of being under house arrest) as they know when she goes, there will be nobody left to pick up the torch.

This is one incredibly brave woman. She's been under house arrest in Burma (and yes, I do say BURMA because Myanmar is what the narrow-minded, fascistic Burmese government call it) for years now. That's the ultimate paradox, if you ask me. The Burmese government can torture and execute thousands and thousands of their own people, but they're terrified of just one woman and they can't shut her up. Maybe because somewhere inside their screwed-up hearts, they know she's right.

Non-violence and peace are a very high and sophisticated weapons for fighting highly sophisticated people. You cant use it against a low-level criminal government like Burmese junta or the brutal China's CCP. They will just cut you up and sell your organs in a non-violent manner before you even blink your eye.

Well, some see non-violence as just a means to an end when facing a insormountable military odds. Other like Gandhi, and I'm guessing these monks, see it as an absolute moral issue. Basically it's an appeal to the humanity of one's oppressors. They'd argue it might take longer but ultimately would create a longer lasting peace.
The difference between you and them are different assumptions about human beings.

the gun is a product of human intelligence. Why not use it ? Americans won their independence from Britain with the gun.
So did Canada. Looks like people who don't have guns use non-violence. Poor people use non-violence as an excuse for their incompetence. Gandhi may be great. But lot of people have lost their lives to non-violence bullshit. People became cannon fodder during British rule of India.

@sargentpepperoni, Violence is just a means to more violence, it's a never ending cycle. You've done this to me, therefore i'll do this too you, no one ever really wins, both partys lose out in the end. The only way to succeed is non violence, thats why the civil rights movement worked, or indian independence. Thousands will be sacrificed along the way, but eventually someday they'll get what they wanted, because love will always conquer hate.

what the country needs the most is the stability and hence more investment and job opportunity..her so called 'democracy' will only cause more troubles to the poor people.considering the country's poor literacy, infrastructure, etc, multiparty elections will only wasting more money on these endless and inefficient debates and fights!

Suu Kyi may be many things to many people and not everyone will agree with her but one thing she is not ..... she is not a tool of anybody, western or otherwise! She has always followed her heart and mind regardless of the enormous personal costs she suffered. She is one of those rare human beings who lives and dies by her principles. Dont' support her cause if you disagree but don't insult her.
