He regripped. Not sure what these japanese rules were, but in most tournies stateside, you have a chance to grip with the other puller. If you don't feel comfortable, both pullers are forced to a ref's grip. The ref is to ensure that this is the most fair grip possible. I think the crowd was just cheering for the drama between these two giants.

You have to understand that there is a lot of technique involved in armwrestling. Without the straps, you are essentially allowed a huge number of techniques and utilizing wrist and finger strengths. Putting you in a strap immobilizes these strengths. Its almost pure power though you can still utilize some technique in the straps.

Brzenk is naturally right handed and Bagent is a natural lefty. Though Bagent's beaten Brzenk in the past on right, this recent match for the two ended in Brzenk's favor. You can see Brzenk easily posts the top roll attack by Bagent. I don't know why Bagent doesnt use his back pressure against Brzenk. He must know that Brzenk can deal with Bagent's back pressure by going into the 'inside' as Brzenk puts it. As he did in this match.

Brzenk totally out-classed him. All that nonsense, false starts, couldn't get a grip. Bagent was doing his usual tricks, trying to find out what the opponent had and was planning to do then he'd fake losing grip. He fights so dirty, but the straps never lie. John is the champion, and he does it with class, not cheap tactics.
