This song is so sad, because if you think of it, it reminds of the old Norse sagas. A great hero travels somewhere to fight a monster, he succeeds but dies later from his wounds, a young servant or perhaps a companion is the sole survivor and returns home as the new hero. When he is old, he sets out for an adventure, fights a monster and dies just to be replaced with a younger fighter, and so the legacy of the heroes live on. The song doesn't say anything about that it's the same hero who.
