  • excellent video...at some point Patti mentioned about making her own seed starting pods. I haven't found anywhere a video discussing this. Did Patti do one? I liked this system but don't have an area warm enough or big enough for it.

    Thanks for the great ideas! Can you tell me what you are planting in? I have made soil blocks, but am afraid they will fall apart in the water and then transplanting to soil will be a root shock for the little plants.

  • Technically with a aquaponics system you don't need to move the plants to soil

    and you do get better bigger multiple Corps keeping them in the system (till they die)

    - Plants love light it not a bad idea to keep the lights on 24/7 (they grow much faster, bigger) (You can use the lights at night and use natural daylight in the day)

    - Full Spectrum [Flora Glo Fluorescent Tube] gives better results (Tube give a warm pink glow) try them in one of your grow units as a trial run. before overhaul sys

    - Gravel - If your going to keep plants in the system longer you will need to add an 1 or 2 inchs of extra gravel to some of the trays so the water level is half way in the gravel layer This allow roots to both be wet & dry but not swimming in water

    P.S [Flora Glo Fluorescent Tube] You can get them in the Size for the lights Fluorescent fittings you already have (they don't need any new power supply for them)

  • What are you starting your seeds in? They look like odd shaped plastic bags, that doesn't make much sense, so I'm assuming that's not what they actually are.

    Also, can you show more detail about your tubing system? How does the water drain out, etc?

  • @UlrikeDG here in Washington US they are called peat pucks and are about 12 cents each Not sure where you are so have no clue what they are called there

  • if there are nutrients in the system algae will develop in your clear lines, also you could go up to 16 or even 18 hours of light.

  • Patti- This is a super exciting way to start seeds, although I do agree with the other commenters that we need more details before we can really impliment this in our basements. I don't understand how the water gets from tank to tank or where the cocoa fiber pellets are sitting (are they just sitting on the gravel inside the bigt container store plastic bins?)

  • I have enjoyed reading the comments ...the referrence to the weed plants ...I'm curious as to the word 'weed' ...I immediately thought ~ the whole idea of eating 'weeds' is to acknowledge that all plants have value growing where they decide to grow ...then I questioned why use hydroponics at all?!? ...then ( : light bulb : ) Oh?!? ...I got it : } (sigh)

    ...really eating 'weeds' is so much simpler than all of this ...and gives such a high that is so much easier and healthier to handle

  • The video never explains the route the water follows. I get the part that the pump sends the water to the top bin. But then how does the water get from the top bin to the next one down ? Do you use a siphon or do you use a fitting through the side wall of the upper bins to connect a hose to ?

  • Go to 0:48 and pause the video. Now if you look very carefully at the top container then you can see one tube going in, and one tube comes out, the other end from that tube just hangs above the next container. So one outlet tube needs to be connected to every single plastic container. Consider it as an overflow system. Make sure that the inlet hole inside the first container is higher situated then the hole from the outlet tube. And that the water flows through the whole container b4 it exits.

    Thanks, But I wish she would have covered that and shown what kind of a fitting she used for that purpose, to go through the wall of the container yet not leak around it. Also she must have elevated the inflow side of the bin in order to create the out flow and to make sure the water doesn't just pool. But then how do you ensure an even spread of new water to the high end of the bin ? If you rely on pooling the water then the ones at the top end will get most the nutrient rich water

  • @hobo59 A plastic or nylon threaded hose connector works fine. Drill or melt the hole in the bin, stick in the threaded hose connector from the outside, then put a bolt on the threads from the hose connector and that's it. If it leaks then use some goop. Ask the hardware store manager for Goop. Don't worry about the water or evenly spread nutrients, the flow will be more then enough.You can buy hose connectors with a 90 degrees bend in them, and the cheapest ones will be more then sufficient.

  • @insAneTunA Some plastics will crack or split when you drill it, so most of the time it's better to melt the hole. Start with a smaller nail just to get a hole to begin with, and ten take some bigger metal, heating up an old drill bit for a few seconds will do the job. No need to use any force.

  • @hobo59 Your welcome, just one more thing, make sure that when you use goop that it's suitable for aquatic purposes. Most goop or goop like products are toxic and some toxic elements dissolve in the water after some time. Bad for your own health, but also bad for the fish and veggies that you want to grow.

  • Great video - always watchable and educational.

    Just an observation but wondering if you find the clear water tank encourages algae growth? I've used a small clear old ice-cream tub as a small reservoir to keep capilliary matting wet on a seed tray but algae started blooming so I spray painted the outside of the tub with black automotive plastic bumper (fender) paint and the water now stays clear even on sunny days. I'm guessing your tank location is out of the sun.

  • @ellorybockting I would think a small solar electric panel would suffice to provide enough recharge on a battery run system. Use a 12 volt battery with a cheap wally world inverter for the pump then get a small solar panel for recharging the battery.
