  • Lord Chuffnell is DISHY!! Definitely the best looking of Wooster's chums.

  • laurie is putting on an accent, even tho' he's english- they're all trying 2 recreate the '20's & '30's & the gentry (of UK & US) spoke differently then, & all the satellite characters are pretty much caricatures; that's why their accents sound strange.

& on the subj of mary poppins, love julie andrews tho i do, she speaks (in films and real life) like someone trying 2 approximate an RP english accent, like a plum farmer's daughter with ideas above her station.

thanks wolf, 4 the audiobooks, 2.

  • @clickjargon3 Uh, sure it is. I'm not sure that "the majority of" can be verified scientifically, but Wodehouse repeatedly uses the particular species as but one of the many indignities forced upon poor Bertie, who wants nothing more than an afternoon at his club followed by a night at the theatre and several generous helpings of the restorative elixir. Instead he has foisted upon him the series of young blighters, aged aunts, and marriage-minded near-cousins depicted all throughout the series.

  • what does he say at 6.40?

  • @Duellist1 We men have our code in these matters

  • 7:02 - Jeeves appears again. Looking absolutely gorgeous.

  • HE LIKED A GIRL ONCE!!! asked her to marry him!!! a first!!

  • is it just me or are there little skips now and then?

  • @scamrasc It's not just you : /

  • @clickjargon3 I blame Dickens.

  • It is then quite impressive how well Hugh Laurie does the American accent in "House." All my American friends say it's impeccable - they had no idea he was British

  • Wooster's grin at 3:22 :)

  • wolfxbloed ol chap, there appear to be bits and pieces missing from this clip. not wanting to complain too much what what, but there you are. jolly good of you to put these up of course.

  • @ahenmaxtae yes i agree old fruit the fault are bally annoying

  • 7:53 That's one of the stuffiest stuffed-frog-faces I've ever seen from Jeeves... xD

  • I find Pauline's voice is SO annoying. And I'm American. It's much to squeaky. The little boy's American accent sounds rather fake, as I see has been previously mentioned. The "why should I give" bit of his line sounded like he was fighting an English accent.

  • Did you notice that Jeeves was avoiding to look at Bertie as well as he could? At least as long as it could be considered as not incredibly rude. I think, Jeeves was a bit hurt that he had to move out because of a sodding trombone! xD

  • @MeonProductions You think? I'm annoyed at Wooster myself!

  • well-well-well, what? i think the chuffy of this show is bertie's kindest and bestest friendlet of them all.

  • @clickjargon3 kids...

  • In almost every episode, sections have been missed out!! It's rather annoying. Grateful as I am to you for posting this :D How come there are bits missing?

  • @LaSeuleEtoile PG Wodehouse's production was immense, To film each episode of the Jeeves-Wooster stories singly would have taken decades. They had to mix some episodes. It's just that the TV series doesn't correspond well enough to the idea of the characters given by the books. I have ALL of these, and I've been a PGW enthusiast since I was 15 (I am 81 now...). Gheorghyi

  • @Gheorgyi I think the jump edits are what is being referred to.

  • @LaSeuleEtoile I know what you mean. There are sudden jumps. For example when the boy asks for 5 shillings we miss the part where he tries to blackmail Bertie with a protection scheme (at least that is what happens in the book). We do a sudden jump here to Bertie saying "what, you won't get 5 shillings out of me". With the jump there does not seem to be any context to this statement.

  • Yeah. I seem to remember Billy Bragg talking about it when I saw him on tour in the US....

  • Just be glad Kevin Costner didn't even try one in Robin Hood. *shudder*

  • @clickjargon3 I don't think Wodehouse liked children at all, really.

  • I really like the actress who plays Pauline in this episode. Some of the later actresses don't quite match up, although from memory, one of them is quite stunning to look at!

  • Wow, new yorkers in 1920 all talked like they had they noses pinched shut.

Oh well, maybe they're meant to be from upstate.

  • annoying the annoying obvious cuts are annoying

  • hmmm ... the rest sounds American though ... or put on!

  • at 4.24: sounds Canadian to me :-)

  • 4:20 ohh its netherfeild park! they used in pride and prejudice

  • fall foliage yet they're wearing Panama straw hats!

  • Bertie is so sweet and polite...when he sees that brat in his car, he just asks "Who are you?". Anybody else would have said, "Hey kid, get the &*^% out of my car!" Well, maybe only an American would have said that... ;)

  • lol, kind of the oposite of hugh's new character lol xD aparently age makes people cranky

  • @RockeroNato yea just look at any teenager

  • Huh, really the young lady seems to be trying to channel Marylin Monroe without the whispery voice.

  • It jumps at 1:04

  • Give me five shillings!!!

  • We Brits still haven't forgotten Dick Van Dyke's unbelieveable English accent in Mierry Pappins.

  • Fair enough. :)

True that was rather embarassing. :D

  • You know, when I first saw that ages ago, I had NO idea he was supposed to be Cockney? I thought he just talked like a weirdo and that was his character.

  • @ nathanielbagshot; I think that's at least partly made up for by the American accents in this episode ;)

  • @nathanielbagshot We Americans haven't forgotten Michael McCaine's terrible West Texas drawl in Secondhand Lions. :)

  • Are those British actors using American accents?

  • I believe so, yes. At least Stoker and, I think, Dwight are. Their accents get really strange at times. Especially to the American ear. Not as bad as Emerald Stoker in season four, though.

  • @wolfxbloed Stay away from that man! He is bad news! Come with me and get a burger and some french fries.

  • Yes... funny how these accents always come out sounding a lot more Canadian than American. They don't sound genuine at all, but I don't mind. :)

  • Stoker was played by Manning Redwood, a New Yorker, although he lived in England for a good many years (and indeed died in England), and married an English woman. Pauline was played by Sharon Holm, who is also American.

  • @alanth252 You know, I was thinking that he sounded like he had a Brooklyn accent mixed with an English one. I know that Americans will often pick up a bit of an English accent after living there for a while.

  • @killface962 Actually, I don't think the woman's accent is half bad.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice cars. I wish I could afford one. (The house might be slightly too much for my humble person)

  • whats wrong with that american girl??? those peeps give a bad name for americans!

  • I adore Jeeves and wish he was my personal valet. He and Bertie need to get back together. They are, indeed, the dynamic duo.

  • Bertie doesn't deserve Jeeves! He'd give up the best valet in the world over a cottage and a silly instrument.

  • These Americans are posh but they speak like Mafia gangsters.

  • Don't you just love the look on Bertie's face when he thinks Jeeves is back? Oooooooohhhh

  • he is NOWHERE without Jeeves....I wish I had a Jeeves

  • Jeves is the very best among Gentleman's personal gentlemen
