Was it injured? Baby Owls learn to fly from the ground instead of jumping off high places, you could of just captured a Owl that was just learning to fly, and it's mother probably pissed off.

I understand the practicality of gutting the little perisher first, but the ragged result probably makes the task of eating more confusing for the owl.

A nice clean pointy-headed rodentus intactus may be more likely to go in head-first, right quick, and it's more like what's to be found outside.
