I was listening to 'Highlights from Treemonisha' and then suddenly noticed 'Hey, this sound a lot like that one choir song I don't know what it's from'. And then I found it's this one. Been looking for this one for years! Love it!
I was indeed fortunate to catch the last performance in the 1975 production. And last night I sat in with a group of extraordinary young Jazz musicians who appreciate their African-American heritage, albeit that of a much different era.
It is unbelievable that this magnificent opera is not performed constantly. It is so truly gorgeous and Joplin's genius abounds. No wonder opera is dying out when we don;t give voice to honest loveliness . This is the work of a great master. Eleanore Alter
Already a Scott Joplin ragtime fan, I was fortunate to hear Treemonisha in its first limited run on Broadway and have the original cast recording. One of the most fantastic things I've ever seen or heard!
Yay! I had the full album on vinyl when I was teenager...brings back memories. Treemonisha really is a great opera, in category all its own. Thanks for posting!
we'll do this in our tonight's concert for the second time - and it's absolutely gonna be HUGE FUN..... although we can't possibly sing so fast - the choir being French with a lovely, lovely FrEnglish accents.... thank you for this WONDERFUL upload!!!
I just kicked out my reply instead of OK'ing...silly!
YES, we had a fantastic second concert and although I am more of a 'Baroque Music Girl', doing this for a change was absolutely WONDERFUL!
Loved every min.of our performance and it went very well. It's just sad when you've prepared a concert for weeks and months and then, after one or two performances, it's history! I am still singing and dreaming Scott Joplin though! And the West Side Story...., Elgar, Holst, and Gilbert & Sullivan
@kikivolauvent Speaking of 'after one or two performances, it's history,' did you know that Scott Joplin funded the original performance of this opera himself? It was a disaster. Hardley anyone attended and he had to play much of the score himself on the piano because he couldn't find musicians to play for him.
After that first performance, nobody played the opera again for about 65 years!

Took over 60 years, but Joplin's opera finally got a professional
premier. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize posthumously.
Studies have shown 98 % of listeners tap their feet or smile
when listening to this rollicking tune.
Tnx 4 the fun post.
