No...they work by tipping the piston with each stroke, effectively dumping the exhaust at the split second the piston tips. This is made possible by a very thin piston less than 1/8 inch thick with tapered edges. They are a joy to see operate on air or steam.
Not oil per se...it is steam condensate (water) with a bit of lubrication oil mixed in. Steam engines always drip some water as the steam becomes water again.
I wish I could say I machined that engine, but I have neither the skill nor the equipment to make such a thing. No, it comes from a small family machine shop operated by the Liney family...called Liney Machine.

A little ball as a valve at the top of the motor. When the little pin on the cylinder pushes the ball open air enter the motor and pushes the piston down.
Very nice engine. But how are the steam valves controlled? I can't see any rod...
