Sorry dylanhelmer, but (duk309) is right about the advanced instrumentation in the cockpit of the B717. The engines aren't Pratt & Whitney JT8D's, but Rolls Royce BR715 engines, thus giving a quieter ride. I love Boeing, but I don't like how they bought Mc Donnell Douglas, and phased them out. The B717 would have been a great seller, but Boeing execs said no. B737's sales are the bread and butter of Boeing, and despite the power of the 757, Boeing halted production to stop competition.
HAHA. The cockpit configuration isn't even remotly similar. All 717s can operate with Advanced RNAV and RVSM capabilities, something the DC-9s cannot do. The DC-9s have 0 glass instrumatation, no FMS. The 717 is the most similar to the MD-11 in cockpit configuration.
every time i have been on a plane, the pilots takeoff, and when they are about FIVE feet from the ground (or so it feels) they start turning. I always feel like the plane is going to tip-stall.
I thought I was the only one who enjoyed this distinct DC9 noise! I already miss it as few DC9s are flown to and from home, Montreal Trudeau Airport. (YUL)
I love..and hate, how to date, nobody has ever captured the full sounds of the JT8D. The thing is so loud, that it muffles a lot of recording devices so that all you hear is the buzzing sound, but if you listen closely, you can hear the noise of the engine
Love it! I have have flown the DC-9 many times, but need to make it a point to get on another before Delta takes them all away!

I'd buy that for a dollar.
You can see the landing light come on and fold forward at 1:01.
