@joshcripe42 homage my ass. I've notice a ton of japanese games using that "homage" excuse to rip off a few characters. It's fucking easy to improve an intended one dimensional character. Snake is a damn ripoff to Snake Plissken dumbass otaku.
@lawrence4566 Name five of this so called "ton". Name the game, the character, and who they're a ripoff of. Also, the homage is entirely in appearance. in the 80s when the original Metal Gear came out they based the appearance of the character on Snake Plissken as a joke. The character himself is wildly different from Snake Plissken. Specifically, whereas Snake Plissken has no real issues, Solid Snake is a mess of emotional issues and self loathing buried under a cold demeanor.
@joshcripe42 first of all if you ever played the original japanese games of Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2 on the older NES consoles, the music that plays thoughout is very very identical to the rambo theme, plus roy campbell is just another ripoff of Richard Crena's character from the films. It's exactly what i mean. They just take the best of snake plissken and change a few crap characteristics to improve their "Originality". That's how their lame attempt to differentiate & hide stolen facts
@lawrence4566 Except if we're gonna talk about that, Snake Plissken himself is nearly identical to The Man With No Name from Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy, far more so than Solid Snake is to Snake Plissken.
@joshcripe42 it's true for the most part of what lawrence4566 says, of course the character are different. But to clarify what he's saying is that, snake's voice, appearance, is clearly identical. But all the Japs did was just do character swipe, keeping a small portion of what character snake was based off. Another example is Duke Nukem, not a japanese game but still the same idea, a complete ripoff of the character Ash from the Evil Dead films.
@atomicfirehead Well Duke is basically every 80s action hero rolled into one, so yes he's nearly identical to Ash as they had the same concept. Appearance and voice do not make them the same character. Yes, Snake is heavily based on Snake Plissken, but the part that matters, the part that makes a character who he is, his PERSONALITY, is different. And Roy Campbell wasn't who was in discussion, but yes he basically IS Colonel Trautman, that I will freely acknowledge.
@joshcripe42 that track atomicfirehead refers to is called "Metal Gear 2 - Advance Immediately" it really does sound identical to the rambo theme. I love the metal gear games honestly, I've only played the ones that matter to the story (Metal Gear 1, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and Metal Gear Solid 1-4) But just because I've played them all and enjoyed them, doesn't mean I'm a fan. So from the beginning of the Metal Gear story, are you saying the whole first game is homage of rambo?
Ah, just stop complaining guys! At first I was saying it sounded nothing like the MGS theme too, but after a while I came to like it. Tappy Iwase clearly took some of the best parts of the song for the MGS theme, but heck, I'm glad he did because both versions are beautiful!
This really doesn't sound like the MGS theme. There's just a couple parts where it makes a similar dah-dah-DAH sound, but that's just it, and even that sounds quite different.
No way, it's plagarized. You are just an uneducated fool. It's a complete and utter ripoff and there is no wonder Kojima was embarassed. What similarities? It is EXACTLY THE SAME, the notes, the progression, everything.
@proman84 Listen to them side-by-side, it sounds completely different. I just did, it sounds so different it's laughable people say it's plagirism. There's a few notes that sound a bit similar in the song, but the MGS2 theme is so different. It's longer, it's quiet when this song is loud, and loud when this song is quiet. They're both good, but so damn different.
I have considered to even bothering responding to you comment. All I can say is that if you don't think that they are the same then you either deaf or in denial.
@proman84 I have acknowledged there is one part of the song that happens 3 times in Troika that sounds similar to a part of the MGS theme, but both those parts end completely different in each song. I'm 100% sure it's completely coincidence and whoever composed MGS (Gregson something?) didn't copy Troika in the slightest, and if he did, than I'll be very surprised.
@proman84 There isn't a whole lot on the internet about the song's history, but from what I gathered it was originally composed by Tappy Iwase, and then remixed by Harry Gregson Williams for MGS2. Honestly, I think the MGS2 theme sounds more similar because it's orchestrated, MGS1 is a techno, electronica-esque song, and it couldn't be more different.
IT IS identical. The movie is even called "Metel" which is almost "Metal". The tune is absolutely identical. Stop pretending otherwise! You can't always be right in life. And in the end, none of this matters. Stop the debate.
I can't believe the theme was actually banned from this. The only thing thats similar is the chord progression. So many different songs have nearly identical chord progressions, if all of them copy righted them there would be no more new songs. The theme from MGS is much better in my opinion.
I wouldn't call it right out plagiarization, but borderlining it absolutely. But any musician will want their work to be heard and appreciated, and MGS brought the theme song out to the people, and people who want to do a little bit of research will find this composition, and they might not have found it if not for mgs. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have.
It could have easily been a non issue if Kojima credited Sviridov, paid him (or his estate rather) some cash and nobody would be bitching and moaning. It's less a matter of the actual music and more a matter of giving credit. Anyone with functioning ears would be able to say that the MGS theme is similar enough to The Snow Storm that Sviridov should have received some credit.
Either way, I don't see the point in blaming Kojima. Blame the so-called "Composer" who presented the piece for use. I doubt Kojima noticed any similarities. There's no way of knowing if he'd ever even heard of the song, honestly.
I will admit that it's stunningly similar, but either way, both songs are enjoyable in their own rights.
Im not sure it its the same or even close to MGS, I want to go on with the melody but it just changes waaaaay too soon to say its the same as metal gear.
There are tons of soundtracks that are close with other tracks, but in this one, im not sure if its on its right place, but I love this kind of music.
I'd understand if it was just one melody, but come on. BOTH of the melodies in the MGS theme are extremely similar to the ones in Sviridov's composition, and they flow in the same order as well. And it's not like it's a straightforward "play-four-notes-and-repeat" type of deal that would so often get duplicated by pure chance.
The melody in Sviridov's version changing "way too soon", as you put it, doesn't close out the possibility of Iwase ripping off bits and pieces for his own composition.
This is not "Sviridov's version" as you said, THIS IS THE ORIGINAL COMPOSITION, composed probably a decade ago....MGS is the version of Sviridov...I'm sure that the orignal composition will live longer then you and I will live, as for MGS...not sure...I give it 5, 10 year maybe...
I dont think that someone would have been so stupid to copy another song, Kojima said that he didnt knew about this himself. And I still think MGS is way more dynamic, that melody may be similiar but its not the same, when you check on those notes, you will know the difference.
The chord progression is near identical in both melodies. They also appear in the exact same order in both compositions. You act like something might have been borrowed ONLY if it's an exact carbon copy of the previous one with the same tempo, same dynamics, same everything. Like if I took the US national anthem and changed the last 2 notes of the composition and increased the tempo, it would then be entirely original and in no way plagirized or influenced by something else.
And for the record, I don't claim to know for a fact that Iwase copied anything. Could it be a coincidence? Yes. But is it likely to be that? Not very. You're acting like it's the other way. You're acting like it's definitely more likely to be a coincidence than anything else.
Do you compose music yourself? Somehow I'm inclined to believe you don't.
Your nickname is "Raiden" and you talk about "gayness"? Sorry, but I had to point that out =PP
I wouldn't say that this is the "gay" version of the MGS-Theme.
First of all: This is the original.
Second: This piece is composed for the movie "Metel" / "The Snowstorm".
The feelings it has to deliver are very different from what a fast paced stealth-action game has to deliver. Of course it is more "exciting" than the original.
My facts ARE straight. Personally, I don't think that Raiden is gay. But it is a common rumor around the internet =P
What is the difference between "like a gayified version" and "a gay version"? Both expressions imply that it doesn't sound as "straight" as the MGS-Version.
Also, the fact that you are Russian doesn't mean that you know it better than me.
That's as if I were saying that I know more about Kafka or Schiller than you because I'm German.
God, some people are stupid, Tappi didn't 'RIP OFF' the music, just took a lot of influence from the harmonic structure of the piece. The actual melodies are completely different and there's a whole lot more added on top too; it's just the silhouette that's the same, if you will.
EVERY COMPOSER THAT'S EVER LIVED HAS DONE EXACTLY THE SAME THING WITH EVERY COMPOSITION THEY'VE WRITTEN.
"Took a lot" without acknowledging it is another name for plagiarism. When professional composers "take a lot" from someone else's piece, they give proper credit to it. Did Tappi do it? I guess that's what makes a difference.
first games was written (for computers, no matter goverment science super computers or home personal computers (like IBM-PC, Commodore or Amiga)) word "game console" doesnt even exists. It's was late 70's.
i dont even know what this argument is about anymore, all i know is that you should start thinking rationally and unless all consoles get shitty games and/or start blowing up after 15mins of gameplay then you can continue saying what you are saying, but for now people will continue thinking you are a retard.
So I'm only checking out this song cause I heard MGS ripped it off. From what I hear, yes they did. Don't get me wrong, I really like this song, it's great! As one other has said, the rip off has led me to this song, and I like it a lot!
Mr. Sviridov. You're above any ratings, you're above any questions. You're THE LAST GREAT COMPOSITOR OF MY COUNTRY but i hope that in one happy day we'll have another great sons of Mother Russia, to create such beautiful music, as you did. I pray for you and your family. Forever yours and Russia's Son.
Thank you so much for uploading the complete "Snowstorm". It was the first piece I played (or, at least, tried) in a big orchestra back in school times, and I really loved it, but it´s hard to get here and this recording is awesome!! Thanks!
Thank you. You seem to be one of the few decent people that commented on the issue. I'm appalled at how few people from the west acknowledge the truth. If you happen to find that CD you won't be disappointed, Sviridov's music is pure beauty.
The sad thing is that many people say it sounds nothing alike, that is what gets me. maybe it is the drums in the background of the MGS one, but it is clear that these things are to much alike to be just a random happening .
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"Even the technology that gave birth to these weapons is Russian." - col. Gurlukovich, MGS 2. How ironic this quote sounds now... It's a beautiful piece, and I'm sad and embarrassed that G-W's work is just a rip-off..
Whenever I listen to this song, I feel like a soldier in a Cossack regiment, toughing through hills of snow, just about to charge into Napoleon's Army.
this is one of the most beautiful songs i ever hear.
im no fanatic to msg but i like it i most admit that but ... just bcause i like mgs im not goig to say that the russian version (original version) sucks OKAY?!
There is no Russian version. The MGS theme is Sviridov's original safe for the differences in orchestration. Now if only someone called Yoko Kanno out on her PERPETUAL ripoffs
One part of me is like "Well, that sounds oddly concidental to not be a rip off."
And the other part of me is thinking "Well, there's obviously so many notes and chords and ways to arrange them in orchestras. Coincidence, lawl, more then just one note is different, it's not a Vanilla Ice."
So, Meh. I wish they kept it, regardless. Because, growing up, you fell in love with the theme. I just can't find myself enjoying the russian version.
Thanks for posting this genius-beautiful Russian music. With all my respect to Japanese people, it is not only purely Russian as such, it is purely geniunely Russian :-)
There is no point in debating it, Kojima already accepted that its a plagiarism. Just hear MGS4 rendition of the theme, they took out the similiar parts.
they want moneys so they went after MGS theme with a song that sound similar. what a loser, just because MGS theme got popular and this song didn't, so they got jealous decided to do this.
.....right, so this song which is nearly IDENTICAL IN MUSICAL MAKE-UP just HAPPENS to sound like the score of a man, who BEFORE the Metal Gear theme hadn't had as much success as OTHER more WELL KNOWN composers in Hollywood....right...
"as OTHER more WELL KNOWN composers in Hollywood....right..."
This last sentence gives me the impression that you think Harry Gregson Williams is the one to blame. No he isn't. His MGS2 theme is a different version of the MGS1 theme composed by TAPPY. So if you want to point fingers, point them at TAPPY. Gregson was not aware of the plagiarism.
That's how music has always worked, more or less for about 500 years now. It's just more obvious because of the advancements that have come with recording and digital distribution.
This is definitely too similar to MGS to be coincidental and it sounds like something that would be popular in Japan. Sounds very dodgy alright and that's from a massive MGS fan.
Please, I've listened to the MGS them hundreds of times, sometimes even when I go to sleep. I have no radio in my car and I end up humming it throughout numerous car rides. It's one of my favorites songs; but it was ripped off. How can you listen to both and deny it?
Do you have a link to these so called "professional investigators" opinions? You are making this stuff up. And the theme isn't in MGS4 as far as I know. Can you think of any other reasons for its absence?
I'm not giving you anything, seeing as you can't even find out that the MGS theme has been put into MGS4.
It is not titled as the theme, and is simply remixed, but it's still the MGS song and it's in the soundtrack. The song is called Metal Gear Saga, go listen to it before you try and argue even that fact.
no it's not. "metal gear saga" is based on the original parts of the stolen themes remixes. Largely from the remixes that appeared in metal gear solid 3 if I'm right but I am not definite on that last fact but none of the plagiarized stuff is present in mgs4. You'd have some extremely large categories if you argued it was still being ripped off.
Hell, it was pulled from the MGS3 theme in the 20th Anniversary CD. They replaced the portion at the end with "There's Room for Only One Big Boss." You're wrong.
That's the MGS3 theme, but at 5:12 they removed the part that sounded similar to Sviridov's work and replcaed it with "There's Room for Only One Big Boss." This is the only version that has been released after the Russian reporters brought it to his attention.
Listen to 5:12 of the old version and it has the real theme from MGS1 and 2 that we all know and love.
Metal Gear Saga lacks this. It merely has the new 0:00-5:12 part exclusive to MGS3.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
listen clearly this song, and then the metal gear solid theme. U would notice dat this song is much slower and calm, while metal gear's is fast-paced due 2 da action, and also dat the way most notes are composed are completely different , and probably Harry or Tappy heard this song in their childhood and sumhow they remembered the melody, while composing this song, therefore giving them a start in composing Metal Gear's theme
I gotta listen to more Sviridov music! He's a pretty good composer.
Now, this whole "The Snow Storm/Metal Gear" incident- I do not think Tappy nor Harry stole the song. Yes, they are simluar, but at least Harry and Tappy change the melody a bit.
That's only because there it's with similiar sounding instriments, if i made you a version of this song that was in shitty "electro" sound, it would sound similiar.
If kojima did copy the MGS theme form this song it sill dos not mater. Its not like he used it for a bad intention. In fact he was spreading the existents of this song. Just to go off topic Hedio Kojima is a game god. all hail Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots
Legally speaking... They can take inspiration from already existing works. So long as at least a third of the work is changed, it is legal. If less than a third is changed the yes, it is plagiarism and illegal

Somehow I'm inclined to believe you don't.

xD
kingq101 2 years ago
thanks :-P
Raiden1000002 2 years ago
Your nickname is "Raiden" and you talk about "gayness"? Sorry, but I had to point that out =PP
I wouldn't say that this is the "gay" version of the MGS-Theme.
First of all: This is the original.
Second: This piece is composed for the movie "Metel" / "The Snowstorm".
The feelings it has to deliver are very different from what a fast paced stealth-action game has to deliver. Of course it is more "exciting" than the original.
BeatPeet 2 years ago
raiden ISNT gay there is lots of proof that he isnt
and i didnt say it is the gay version of it i said it is LIKE A gay version of it
I KNOW THAT THIS WAS MADE FOR A RUSSIAN MOVIE, I AM RUSSIAN MYSELF SO I KNOW THAT BETTER THAN YOU
its true (imo) that mgs theme sounds better than the original and the reason most people come to this vid is to hear the original theme
next time you are going to comment on something that you deem too dumb for you, you should get your facts straight
Raiden1000002 2 years ago
My facts ARE straight. Personally, I don't think that Raiden is gay. But it is a common rumor around the internet =P
What is the difference between "like a gayified version" and "a gay version"? Both expressions imply that it doesn't sound as "straight" as the MGS-Version.
Also, the fact that you are Russian doesn't mean that you know it better than me.
That's as if I were saying that I know more about Kafka or Schiller than you because I'm German.
BeatPeet 2 years ago
More like a subtler and classier version, but okay.

It's nothing new
mobytoss 2 years ago
"Took a lot" without acknowledging it is another name for plagiarism. When professional composers "take a lot" from someone else's piece, they give proper credit to it. Did Tappi do it? I guess that's what makes a difference.

Not really, even Beethoven did it on a regular basis, he's considered one of the greatest composers of all time!

first games was written (for computers, no matter goverment science super computers or home personal computers (like IBM-PC, Commodore or Amiga)) word "game console" doesnt even exists. It's was late 70's.
clouster75 2 years ago
first official game was pong,
pong was on a console,
its obvious that a console is a computer,
i dont even know what this argument is about anymore, all i know is that you should start thinking rationally and unless all consoles get shitty games and/or start blowing up after 15mins of gameplay then you can continue saying what you are saying, but for now people will continue thinking you are a retard.

Thank you so much for uploading the complete "Snowstorm". It was the first piece I played (or, at least, tried) in a big orchestra back in school times, and I really loved it, but it´s hard to get here and this recording is awesome!! Thanks!
gnoedel 3 years ago 2
I'm another big fan of MGS, but I think Sviridov's original music is a thousand times better. The MGS theme is catchy; this is beautiful.
I'm almost kind of glad he was ripped off because it's introducing me to more of his music and I've decided to buy a CD.
whutuppp 3 years ago 5

@rhcpandsum41
There is no Russian version. The MGS theme is Sviridov's original safe for the differences in orchestration. Now if only someone called Yoko Kanno out on her PERPETUAL ripoffs
proman84 1 year ago
I'm not really sure what to think.
SemperMalum 3 years ago
Thanks for posting this genius-beautiful Russian music. With all my respect to Japanese people, it is not only purely Russian as such, it is purely geniunely Russian :-)

they want moneys so they went after MGS theme with a song that sound similar. what a loser, just because MGS theme got popular and this song didn't, so they got jealous decided to do this.
hangguy209 3 years ago
.....right, so this song which is nearly IDENTICAL IN MUSICAL MAKE-UP just HAPPENS to sound like the score of a man, who BEFORE the Metal Gear theme hadn't had as much success as OTHER more WELL KNOWN composers in Hollywood....right...
TolstoyKafkaEvsky 3 years ago
"as OTHER more WELL KNOWN composers in Hollywood....right..."
This last sentence gives me the impression that you think Harry Gregson Williams is the one to blame. No he isn't. His MGS2 theme is a different version of the MGS1 theme composed by TAPPY. So if you want to point fingers, point them at TAPPY. Gregson was not aware of the plagiarism.
OrigamiPaper 3 years ago
Yeah, I never heard THAT score until the second games. The music in MGS1 was COMPLETELY different.
TolstoyKafkaEvsky 3 years ago
The ONE motif everyone is talking about is from the original game. Gregson-Williams adopted it for the second game, he did not create it.

But there is nothing wrong with it. This is how music work now a days. You can take a lil and vary it.
Dont get immature about it people.

Agree bro. Just don't forget say something for the source, give credit! Don't admit it is your purely work if u copy from others, that's all.

hahahihi23 3 years ago
That's how music has always worked, more or less for about 500 years now. It's just more obvious because of the advancements that have come with recording and digital distribution.
audiophage 3 years ago 2
This is definitely too similar to MGS to be coincidental and it sounds like something that would be popular in Japan. Sounds very dodgy alright and that's from a massive MGS fan.

I love MGS Theme. But IMO, Tappy the creator should at least put some credits to this 1974 russian composer!
hahahihi23 3 years ago 2
No. Tappy does not need to credit anyone. Someone wanted money and dug this up.

Tappy ripped this off, and there is no way it wasn't intentional.

Tappy didn't rip this off you idiot. Funny that the courts don't agree with you there and the MGS theme is appearing in MGS4.
METAL GEAR SOLID THEME.
TacticaLGS 3 years ago
Please, I've listened to the MGS them hundreds of times, sometimes even when I go to sleep. I have no radio in my car and I end up humming it throughout numerous car rides. It's one of my favorites songs; but it was ripped off. How can you listen to both and deny it?
bstickq1 3 years ago
Maybe because the law says so.
Your opinion on this matter means nothing when professionals have investigated the songs, and said that there is no plagiarism.
TacticaLGS 3 years ago
Do you have a link to these so called "professional investigators" opinions? You are making this stuff up. And the theme isn't in MGS4 as far as I know. Can you think of any other reasons for its absence?
bstickq1 3 years ago
I'm not giving you anything, seeing as you can't even find out that the MGS theme has been put into MGS4.
It is not titled as the theme, and is simply remixed, but it's still the MGS song and it's in the soundtrack. The song is called Metal Gear Saga, go listen to it before you try and argue even that fact.
TacticaLGS 3 years ago
no it's not. "metal gear saga" is based on the original parts of the stolen themes remixes. Largely from the remixes that appeared in metal gear solid 3 if I'm right but I am not definite on that last fact but none of the plagiarized stuff is present in mgs4. You'd have some extremely large categories if you argued it was still being ripped off.
iasted 3 years ago 2
Look.
It's not in the Metal Gear Saga track.
Hell, it was pulled from the MGS3 theme in the 20th Anniversary CD. They replaced the portion at the end with "There's Room for Only One Big Boss." You're wrong.
dkaizerx 3 years ago
I'm wrong? Go and actually listen to the soundtrack. It's in "Metal Gear Saga". Please unplug your internet.
TacticaLGS 3 years ago
I did listen.
watch?v=WFeu5KlBI3k
That's the MGS3 theme, but at 5:12 they removed the part that sounded similar to Sviridov's work and replcaed it with "There's Room for Only One Big Boss." This is the only version that has been released after the Russian reporters brought it to his attention.
Listen to 5:12 of the old version and it has the real theme from MGS1 and 2 that we all know and love.
Metal Gear Saga lacks this. It merely has the new 0:00-5:12 part exclusive to MGS3.
dkaizerx 3 years ago
That is a completely different song. That is not the MGS theme. So to answer your question, yes, you are wrong.

listen clearly this song, and then the metal gear solid theme.

Now, this whole "The Snow Storm/Metal Gear" incident- I do not think Tappy nor Harry stole the song. Yes, they are simluar, but at least Harry and Tappy change the melody a bit.
