Must be England where its difficult to get a dynamite licence or perhaps the operators employer was too mean to hire a rock hammer. A lot of machines are piped to run a hydraulic jack hammer but the operators are too lazy to use them. There is also the urban myth that jackhammers are banned because of vibration whitefinger.  The tin mines had stuff to deal with hard rock - even "plastique" but the days when these convenient methods of removing tree stumps etc are long gone,

Peter Barton has the most unique livery that consists of a green P & L on either side of the ballast weight.

I have worked for this guy a few times and i live two minuites away from the beach that machine is playing on!

Best case would be to have a bit larger machine with more breakout force, like a 330 or even a 450 (that looked like a 240 or 290) to dig and have a 2nd machine in a 240-330 range with a hammer on it. In that operators defence he may not be dumb like others are saying, sometimes you just have to use what your givin and maybe that was all he had or could get at that particular time!

Haha I work with a guy who operates the exact same way. He runs a Komatsu PC300. His hammer blew up so he just threw the bucket back on and cranked on the the rock. Just think of it as a reaaaaally slow hammer :)
