My favorite Husker Du album is The Living End. Live show put on for the fan club and recorded for all of us to enjoy. The live track of Powerline alone makes that an album we all should own. Ice cold Ice kicks ass on it too. I love Husker Du.
out of all the 80's/90's underground love H-DU the most-but I reckon they were just sabotaged by shite recording- flip yr wig n new day rising need some serious remastering and audio punch-- they fucking rock but they don't have the raunch of zen arcade... and warehouse just sounds so clinically sterilley 80's- but still kiks- imagine these guys with a fucking now analog studio and on to it producer- unbeatable band-fucking amazing songs and live kudos to spare- so underated ....;(
Warehouse is an incredible good record. Songs like "Turn it around", "Ice Cold Ice" or "You can live at home" are just amazing. There is no such things as a creative decline in the records of Hüsker Dü. They kind of seemed to develop with each record.

Amazing how a punk band that was once good in the early 80's can fall so low. This is just bad hard rock. Everyone singing along is just cheesy. The guy even plays a V-shaped guitar. A good thing they split shortly after this, they had turned to pure crap.
@girlie347: Husker Du got better with each record, the final lp "Warehouse Songs & Stories" was undoubtedly their most consistent lp. "Zen Arcade", "Flip Your Wig", " New Day Rising" were great lps, but their first records "Land Speed Record" etc any true Husker Du fan will tell you, were not their best. So I'm at odds understanding your statement .And who gives a shit what the shape of his guitar is?..Do you know ANYTHING about this band? Do you know why you posted such a misinformed comment?
Husker was a great alternative to mindless bands like Slayer, but just one thing: Warehouse was not their greatest album. It was a bounceback from a shitty record called "Candy Apple Grey." Like most bands, this band, possibly the greatest band of all time, peaked in 1985, the year New Day Rising and Flip Your Wig came out. While Warehouse was a good comeback, they no longer had that same tight synergy evident earlier the decade. Relationships were too strained and really showed up in the music.
@cheezgrater : thanks for your comment. Nice to see a true Husker fan who knows what they're talking about. However, I'll agree to disagree. Song for song , "Warehouse" is , i think, their most consistent collection of tracks. With maybe a couple of exceptions, no filler on the lp, which for a double lp is typical of the talent this band possessed. Granted, "Apple Grey" was disappointing, and I love "Wig" ,"Arcade" ,"Rising" but "warehouse" is their crowning creative achievement for me.
@deathfromabove77 I'm also going to agree to disagree. I think FLIP YOUR WIG is their most 'consistent' album (and one of the best punk records of the 20th century). I challenge any band, anywhere - ever, to have a program that even approaches the steady climax of FYW's SIDE A: 1.Flip your Wig, 2. Every Everything, 3. Makes no Sense at All, 4. Hate Paper Doll, 5. Green Eyes, 6. Divide and Conquer, and 7. GAMES.. Truly the best half-album on God's Green Earth, in my humble oppinion..
@cheezgrater "Relationships too strained, showing up in the music". There's a theory amongst some critics/fans that strained interband relationships mean strained creativity. I disagree. Some of the greatest rock music was made by bands seemingly falling apart ("abbey rd", "rumours", "who's next" "synchronicity" etc). And how do strained relationships "show up in the music?"..Are the drums out of time because Grant Hart isn't talking to Bob Mould? ..please explain
Bob Mould and Grant Hart had a volatile chemistry that finally blew up and they broke up while touring the Warehouse album. But this chemistry also was what made them great. It was all about feel. They never used songlists and constantly were perfecting their songs to outdo each other. This tension is what gave Husker their edge and made them great. These guys still hate each other a quarter of a century later, but they enjoyed playing together for a long time and it showed.
@cheezgrater Is it documented that they hate each other still? I always wondered... I did see a photo of them playing together at a benefit for Soul Asylum's bass player -- he had cancer and may have died -- back in 2004, or so.? Couldn't agree more on the "Chemistry" point you made. I seem to recall an article I read back in '92 when Uncle Tupelo had released "Still Feel Gone" and the author, after making the comparison of UT to Lennon and McCartney, went on to mention Mould and Hart!
@Shirls1987 Yeah, unfortunately that benefit was the only time they've been near each other in 23 years. My hopes for them ever reconciling have faded considerably since 1987. Back then, it seemed even more impossible than Tommy Stinson getting back together with the Replacements.
I think the pressure of playing up to the commercial hacks at the record company got to them. Mould kind of started giving them what they wanted and compromised what the band was all about. These important years? Hart was just trying to write as many songs as Mould. Could have been a real solid single album. There's a lot of fluff on it. Greg Norton's 'Everytime' didn't even make it on the album because of the other two's childish feud. it easily would have been one of the best tracks.
@girlie347 : Are you fucked in the head or something? Husker Du are regarded by most sane music lovers as one of the seminal hardcore bands of all time. An enormous body of songs and classic lps.Husker Du have given more to hardcore/punk music lovers than you mean to this world. Go get a music education you fucking loser.
First ever Hüsker song I heard, and it was love at first hearing!

i don't see what all the complaints about Warehouse are about. Its perfect. Its full on and the drums sound right on the button. A remix will do nothing for it. I like the sound off all of the albums wouldn't change 'em for the world. Our bunch of mates all sank into Zen Arcade at the time and then couldn't believe how quickly the LPs kept coming. No reunion ever. Good. They did it. Its done and dusted. And it remains as potent as music gets. Maaaaaan
A remaster of the SST stuff would be great. The CDs sound awful. I transferred my vinyl lps to CD and they sound better than the official SST CD releases.
well said. Bob is still kicking ass today. I saw him last year in SF, I swear I saw god when he ended with New Day Rising! One of the best shows I've ever seen.
stupid people who just sit around and make comments about how gay, or how white, or how black people are. we could be commenting on the structure of the music, the way it's arranged, or how loud or how quiet it is.
what a bunch of dip shits we all are. stupid stupid people who just sit around and make comments about how gay, or how white, or how black people are. we could be commenting on the structure of the music, the way it's arranged, or how loud or how quiet it is. but no, we don't like music. we're just controlled by the media to redirect our attention ro fabricated and asinine labels based upon our images and material preferences. what a stupid, futile, and idiotic existence we've created.
I can see you are greatly offended other people find humour in the fact that two of the manliest songwriters in the history of music turned out to be gay. If you would like, I can go get you a tampon to dry your tears.
I always laugh when I remember that they are gay. Anyone would think that if any member of the band was gay it would be Greg. Ya know...the mustache...
Why do all the Warehouse songs sound so much better live than on the album? The drums are all really out of time on the studio versions for whatever reason but Grant sounds great here...
It's not just the horrendous mixing, the drumming is really horrible on both of their major label releases. I suspect they may have recorded the drum tracks separately from the other instruments but Grant's style totally depends on complementing the rhythm of the rest of the band.
maybe the drums were recorded seperately from the guitar and bass from what i remember grant and bob were not exactly the best of pals before the band split for good.
Guys, there is little to no chance that this stuff was recorded 'separately.' In 1985, you could barely record an album without drums and a click track. Don't forget how quickly they used to record...also worth noting, though completely out of category, Bonham used to ALWAYS sit behind the beat. Grant was not as good at all, but it lends to the style of Husker's records.
I wouldn't say that the drumming is bad, or even out of time/rhythm... It's just that the mix is kind of out there, and really doesn't fit Grant's intense style. The original vinyl sounds *much* better than the CD issues, though it still doesn't fix the issues inherent in a wonky mix.
I'd love to get my hands on some remasters, but that won't happen until Bob and Grant settle their differences. Le sigh.
Definitely, the same songs are MUCH better on the the live CD. "Standing in The Rain" is an example. Everything on "Warehouse:" sounds like the same song.
OMG this is fantastic. This song and performance is so good the trees behind them are moving to it.
