I used to think she said "nion" at the lion! Never took the time to realize it was a goat! At age 4 I always thought that it was a lion! One of the things we take for granted when there's no VCRs, etc. and it's the mteenth time you've seen it!
9 represents the sun in this clip, and there are 9 planets in our solar system. Or so it was believed at the time, there's that debate about Pluto being "worthy" of true planetary status. Plus a recently discovered tenth body.
This is the one missing one, however it doesn't contain the intro with (probably a baseball player or something) with 9 on their jersey. Like the 3 Race Car, the 8 Eight ball, etc. Also, #7 is missing the intro with the runner/basketball player.
The people editing this episode of Sesame Street skipped the intro you are talking about. Either they did it to save a whole second and a half or they just didn't think it was important. I recorded this in the mid eighties, so that would be a good guess.
I distinctly remember it was a diver jumping into a pool from a high platform, and then a number nine emerges from the pool towards the camera. Am I confabulating?
This is the Jazzy Spies sketch that was missing from Youtube. Thank you for posting this. I'm glad all of the clips of this series are posted. Thanks again.

Nine is the best one... I liked the "Ny-un" with the easel.

I used think she said "lion"!
Trund27 2 years ago
No, it's all "nine"s; why would she have said "lion"?
rdangelo 2 years ago
I thought this when I was 4 years old!

"Ny-un" is the way telephone operators used to pronounce it. So did Bob Barker, for some time.

Yep, that's what it was! Funny how the 9 intro is kinda the odd man out, because it doesn't feature the person or object speeding towards the viewer.
kellogg70 5 years ago
No, you were right. There was a diver. Almost every "Jazzy Spies" segment except "#6" was sports-related in the openings.

confabulous, man.

Confabulation, my ass. Here's the proof:

OK, so what the guy jumps into isn't a pool. It's a seesaw or something. Sue me.

If 6 was 9.

I always remembered "nion". Maybe Grace was so wacked out on LSD she thought the goat was a lion when she said it.

Grazie! il numero Nove... molto bene!!

number 9... number 9... number 9....
DiAnno13 5 years ago
What did the lion have to do with the number 9 BTW?
jbl1975 5 years ago
The voice-over never said "lion", although it did pronounce "nine" (once!) to rhyme with that word, just after the dancing goat appears.
ISNorden 5 years ago
Sure sounded like "lion" to me.
jbl1975 5 years ago
Apparently telephone operators used to pronounce it "ni-on" to avoid confusion with "five"
kellogg70 5 years ago
"Yes, this is PUmpernickel ni-on ni-on ni-on ni-on..."
DiAnno13 5 years ago
...sounds like an old Nichols and May routine..."N as in Newell post..." My grandmom used to say "ni-on" for "nine" when on the phone...

Hallelujah, the series is finally complete! Here's the ninth and last (no Jazz #1 was ever made) of those five-star classics...
ISNorden 5 years ago
What about the Spanish 7 & 10. I don't think Grace Slick would sing, "Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, seite, ocho, nueve, diez."
QBCNetwork 5 years ago
It was a different vocalist who copied Grace's intonations, i.e. a very breathy "diez" at the end of the race in #10.

It's Charo. It's been confirmed by SS fans everywhere.
