Ok, I've heard about this Beethoven guy and I really can't understand the hype. What's great about him? He's really not doing anything spectacular in this video. He has nothing on Metallica. They also played with symphony instruments on the S+M-CD. And those Beethoven notes are also very easy (those in the beginning), Metallica does much more complicated stuff.
Going deaf yes, going blind ... not sure ... or maybe I'm the one who missed something here? As far as I know, he just got deaf ... that's already bad enough, especially for a musician.
@Rajamuttu I attend live concerts all the time. I am a season subscriber to my local symphony orchestra. I am willing to pay for programs of this caliber and contribute heavily to Public Broadcasting which rewards me by only showing programs like this when they have the cup out for donations. Major networks won't touch programming like this because of the mentality of the average viewer.
So, if you are blaming me for the crap, look elsewhere.
@Rajamuttu Just a little language blip here. It's difficult to express clearly sometimes on the internet. We was meant as "we as a society." And you were doing the same. I do think we feel the same about this and both programs you mention are worthy of more attention.
@joaoluis87 I know, but you don't have two timpani playing the same thing at once. Timpani generally take turns when played, don't they? You hit one, then another. It just threw me off a bit when he said it that way.

How sad that there are no mainstream programs of this caliber on today. We get an endless stream of crap.
jgesselberty 1 year ago 4
@jgesselberty
1) Because you watch the endless stream of crap.
2) Because you are unwilling to pay for programs of this caliber.
Your local symphony is probably doing one this weekend.

You said "we", and I was addressing "you" plural.
I assume you have seen Michael Tilson Thomas's version of this kind of broadcast?
And listen to "Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin"?

"Multiplied from 2 to 18 times"
Even the timpani?
Treijim 2 years ago
@Treijim when he says 2 to 18 times is because usually horns you have 2 or 3 of them but when is comes to violins you usually have 18

Treijim 1 year ago
@Treijim you might have 2 timpanis in order to duplicate the power of their sound, sometimes more. Sometimes they can be doing different things
joaoluis87 1 year ago
@Treijim I'm not sure I've heard it in Beethoven's 5th, but yes you're right

Thanks for posting this. I've wanted to see it for decades, since I first read the script in Bernstein's "Joy of Music" over 40 years ago.
