  • i think i jizzed when i heard the lick at 3:23...

  • press the snowflake and he gets covered in snow and rain...

  • DeLa and his bass... DeLa and his groove... DeLa.

  • when/where was this filmed?

  • @meandnotyou29 This was filmed at the Georgia Theater.

  • Can't get any better !! i <3 john mayer

  • DE'LA gets to work on this stuff!!

  • Thank you John for this beauitful song especially on this day of 9/11, I am from NY and i believe this is a sad day for all americans but music can help soothe our souls so thank you

  • One of the most talented musicans of our time!

  • gotta love them chicken wings towards the crescendo towards the end

  • 'Covered In Rain' is probably the best song John Mayer has ever written. It was a follow up lyrically to his song 'City Love.' 'City Love was about a romance of a good friend of his. His friend had a girlfriend whose name was Lidya and the romance was set in New York City. When sadly 9/11 happened, John Mayer was compelled to write a new song which continued their love story.

  • @Ceeby cool story bro

  • i cant find any words to describe his performance..too much emotions....

  • Muito legal boa musica!!!

  • TUNE!

  • Both this song and City Love are about Lydia. He mentions in this song about her leaving, after 9/11.

  • what kind of pedals is he using?

  • @angelvallo He uses a lot of pedals...(i mean a LOT) but the ones he uses more for the solos are bubble box and a tube screamer from ibanez that gives him that SRV kinda sound.

  • i've read that john claims lydia was fictional, but i'm not sure if that's true.

  • @punkdude543 it was about like the record companies managers wife i think or something like that

  • Comment removed

  • i'm very aware of the song city love, and i understand they are linked. i was just sharing that i've read a couple comments from different people claiming they've either read or watched in interviews john mayer claiming lydia was fictional. again though, i'm not sure that is true

  • @punkdude543

Yeah i've read a few people saying that too. Thing is i'm very certain Lydia is a real woman, since he in the Room For Squares documentery "This Will All Make Perfect Sense Someday" he says, when going through songs, that in the making of City Love he would talk to people who liked the song alot, but thought the name "Lydia" for the song was abit inappropriate so he changed it City Love, in fact, much like Hendrix (though reversed) he took something, and made it into another thing

  • is it just me or does jm play a different variant of this song everytime?

  • @Frincles just about.

  • 4:48 haha chicken dance

  • This is a beauitful song!

  • this versions sick but the any given thursday one is way better lol

  • @jimmypage321

totally agree, the solo on any given thursday equals wicked sick

  • this is from the same concert when he did the no such thing video

  • 4 dislikes?????

  • Comment removed

  • who is this lucky bitch lydia? haha!

  • early guitarist john >> experienced guitarist john

  • @gamizuco nahh come on, Yeah this is awesome for raw playing, and im not knocking it at all, It's sick... But his playing has been elevated, over the last few years, to a level that VERY few players ever even dream of! hahah

but I will say that his singing is way better now than it was here!

  • hey pat

  • Who is Lidya?

  • @LucyVanPelt983 i think it was his girlfriend at the time, or at the time he wrote the song, the lyrics are a memory of her, meaning they broke up.

  • @Stratticus93

Is she the same girl of City Love? He seemed pretty much in love.

  • @LucyVanPelt983 yeah its the same girl, city love was written before 9/11 though, and covered in rain was after. The lyrics may have double meanings i dno :/, both brilliant songs though :) R.I.P 9/11

  • @Stratticus93 Lydia was the producer of Room for Squares (John Alagia) girlfriend at the time.

  • @dougsusername aaah, makes more sense now, thnks :)

  • @Stratticus93 yeah cause John (Mayer) didn't live in NYC yet so how could he write about his NYC love lol.

  • @dougsusername room for squares was produced in New York, so yes he did. It was written just before 9/11. then 9/11 happened, so he decided to make covered in rain, he did live in ny.

  • @Stratticus93 yeah he made part of RFS in NYC but he didn't call it his home until after that album.

  • @dougsusername really? that had to be akward.

  • Still, I love the version from Any Given Thursday. The problem is it's a 10 minutes song, with like, 7 minutes of guitar solos. I wish he recorded that version exactly as it is, but shorter. Either way, it's such a beautiful song! It's amazing how John can make his songs sound even better live!

  • Was this the same gig that the video for 'No Such thing' was filmed?

  • so beautiful (him AND the song) :)

  • Matt Johnson formerly of the Jeff Buckley Band on drums. coool!

  • the teenage girls does'nt understand what genius mayer is

  • @Frincles i think i see what you mean but "genius" wow!!! come on dude...

  • @Frincles well, i'm 14 and i am fascinated by john. but i agree with you. it justs disappoints me to see that almost all teenage girls listen to justin bieber like it was real music. they just don't know music at all.

  • not bad

  • first of all love this song! i am headed to see him in tampa on the 10th and i can't wait!!!

  • @kimberly1450 me tooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the one thing i love about his lyrics is that some of them dont have ryming words. i hope i spelled that right. i hate songs that ryme and his lyrics don't.

  • Idk what it is about 2:34- 2:46 but to me everything about it is flawless. I want to learn that part!

  • I'm digging on his shirt

  • I wonder what he'd be like if he truly followed the SRV style that he used to have so well back in his heavier things/continuum days.... he was GOD

  • getting ready see john in saratoga and darien lake i can't wait!!!

  • could someone send me the mp3 version of the song

  • help!

Can anyone out there send me the video or a possible mp3 version of the exact version of this song?

    Much appreciated...Very much!

    -Wholesome

  • kinda funny how the christmas lights look like "rain"

  • John Mayer-Assassin (Music Video) Up On Youtube

  • best guitarist ever in my opinion in his style!!!:D

  • @mimaxworld wouldn't go that far, agree has a real funky groove and can play just as good as anyone, but for me SRV is untouchable..

  • @mimaxworld no kidding. ive been looking for this comment for a long time!!

  • How in the world does he come up with this stuff? Marvelous! Check out the Any Given Thursday version of this song--deserves to be on a "best guitar solos of all time" list, if you ask me.

  • @SuperGamer87 Since it seems to be mostly improvised, yeah, it's definitely one of the best guitar solos of all time. This man is an absolute genius.

  • @SuperGamer87so right, watched it a lot of times and it still blows me away after all these years

  • @Zookeeper1983 yeah it's the same to me. i like this version even more than the longer one from the any given thursday dvd.

  • wow this is funky!!! nice offbeat timing!!!

  • John Mayer is AWESOME!

  • only john can make such a great song with 2 basic chords

  • @skateplanbboard Thats what I've noticed about John. He can make really simple songs that appeal to people and he could stop there. But he doesn't. He makes elaborate songs because he knows he's better than that. I've attempted so many of his songs on guitar, and I can just feel the effort he put in them.

  • Who's the other guitarist? Bald guy?

  • was gonna say, his JM signature wasnt around during this time, SRV strat maybe not , if your talking replica number one. This is model that he was using at the time that evolved into his signature, look at the neck and everything come on people

  • looking at the reply down there, that makes sense about the mods

  • @colorblindheartful I don't think there have been mods to the hardware, it still has the lefty tremolo on it that's stock on the SRV strat. Maybe the gold had already faded a bit

  • Comment removed

  • omg, guys, its an SRV strat, its not a JM signature, stop bitching about which one it is and just enjoy the music

  • it is NOT an SRV strat, look at the damned pickguard for pete's sake

  • It's an SRV indeed. Just check the release date of the JM Sig and the date the video was recorded....this guitar also has the reverse tremolo

  • @aaronbadboy8 it's an SRV strat. we swapped the black SRV pickguard for a tortoise shell and the gold hardwear for silver. go watch the any given thursday performance, you'll see stevie's signature on the head stock where it should say "original contour body."

  • @aaronbadboy8 he removed it, look at the tremolo bar, its for leftys...daah

  • it might not even be a signature strat... can it not just be a sunburst coloured strat with a black pickguard?

  • they played this one a bit too fast for my liking. I love it when it's smooth, laid-back blues.

but he still plays some sick guitar here!

  • @Boss44221 Yeah, that's a SRV, you can see the reverse tremolo. His guitar is very similar to the SRV in electronics from what I understand.

  • are u sure its a srv....cus it has the same pickguard as jms sig...and the srv has a black pik guard......id say its a jm sig

  • love that line at 3:01

  • Mayer's playing an SRV Strat right?

  • No it's his sig model thru a fender supersonic

  • @postaflip7 he must've went into the future and brought back his signature for the show, cause when this was filmed his signature wasn't made yet.

  • Protoypes are very common with major recording artists

  • @postaflip7 his signature wasnt released until 2005, this was 2002. highly unlikely to be a prototype.

  • Love this song, check out "covered in rain" in Any Given Thursday his solo is much better and cleaner and the song is longer!

  • great drumming...his roles/fill-ins and all that stuff fit the dynamics of the song beautifully

  • learn the g minor pentatonic in all the boxes, shift up and down according to key. its a mixture of major and minor that give a solor color look at his solo, solid minor in the beginning but it goes out to other tones and colors.

  • This must be the greatest possible feeling in the world, just starting out in the beginning, before being really rich famous, and KNOWING a prosperous career is ahead. Everything; the money, the places, where your going to live, doing something you love, and most of all, being really really proud of yourself.

  • @HalfBillion you never know. so its not the greatest, its torture

  • @HalfBillion The money doesnt even matter, I would do that even if i didnt get paid.

  • @HalfBillion I think most of us would want that because we are too insecure to get the "greatest possible feeling" from truly being involved in the lives of those we love, myself included, but I think touring would get old quickly. I often have trouble believing musicians still enjoy playing their songs after so many years, few of them seem to be truthful when you watch their eyes, faces, and body language. You can only feel a feeling so many times, then it is an act.

  • @HalfBillion no its not, the best feeling is when you're old, you sit down, open up your lifes book, and look back at what you went through to get to now

  • @HalfBillion It is.

  • @HalfBillion,

That was beautiful. I couldn't have said it better myself.

  • @HalfBillion you are right it would be great, its why im working so hard at this.

  • @HalfBillion Although Mayer's life may seem surreal, you should watch his "Where the Light Is" DVD and also read his interpretation of his song "Gravity" where he talks about his perspective on his life and success. Not really something a fan would suspect looking from the outside.

  • when he starts shaking and dancing on that solo in the beginning is killer

  • Plus there was no John Mayer Strat in 2002.

  • I wish this was on a studio album, just to hear how it'd sound all cleaned up. I know that most of the joy from this song comes from the fact he's playing it live, but still...

  • Agreed!

  • check out the one where he is in a green shirt its even better

  • @cyclonenimrod all of the joy comes from playing live, i play in a band and i've recorded in studio and all the stuff from when i was just starting out in my living room on my rock band microphone and i get some joy from recording knowing that ppl listen to my music somewhere, but i get all the joy from playing live because its about you and all the ppl there with you. its like a high i cant explain, i love john mayers music and i love it even better when he plays it live. lol

  • is he using g minor pentatonic to solo in ?

  • Yeah. G Minor pentatonic would work. B flat Major pentatonic would theoretically work as well, but you'd have to choose the right notes out of that scale for it to sound right.

  • Those two keys are, as far as soloing is concerned, the same thing. The notes are no different.

  • The notes are the same, but it's technically still considered a different key. He doesn't seem to know a lot about theory, so I assumed he just knew basic shapes and forms. That's why I told him about the two different keys.

  • Aren't G Minor pentatonic and B flat Major pentatonic the same scale?

  • yup

  • there also the only scales you ever really need to learn

  • not at all. try playing along to a song like 'wheel' in a pentatonic. sounds terrible. gotta play a straight major scale, otherwise you're missing half the notes which give your solo colour. same goes for a song like 'vultures'

  • @lukeee89 im saying those are the only to i know, ive made "extensions" to them that im sure are other scales but oh well

  • Yeah its called a relative key. It reflects on all scales. G maj is E min. C maj is A min. Etc. . .

  • People are so ignorant! It is a SRV Strat FINAL!

  • the solo on agt just rocks harder, this version is a little more mellowed out

  • JH chords. There is still musicians nowadays... :)

  • Everyone quit arguing, its a SRV. JM strats dont have gold hardware or a left handed tremelo, which this one obviously does. Hence SRV.

  • Kevlllar. I hear you. I am a drummer, to try and hold back during this song is very.....VERY......Hard. His guitar licks just scream quick double bass pedal multi cymbal madness!

  • Fender didn't release a John Mayer signature strat until June 2005...

  • hm did'nt see thoses stickers.

thaught it would be his sig, guitar, cause i've got one and it looks the same. i apologize :)

  • its his SRV. i would know. i have one.

plus, behind the headstock you can see a couple stickers that he placed there when he was a kid. that is his original SRV.

  • yeah whatever dude..

  • Please don't keep spewing that shit. It's his SRV Signature, and it doesn't matter how many uninformed fans that come in here and try to claim otherwise. It's his Stevie Ray Vaughan Signature. End of story.

  • this stuff is just straight up good music! awesome. and i love how the drummer gets that less is more in this song

  • It's crazy how he's getting this tone with a SRV strat and a Hot Rod Deluxe

  • this is from the same concert as the No Such Thing video was shot.

For some reason that kinda wierds me out. I always thought of that video as a setup video, cause of the look.

  • Cause his Record Company werent sure if No Such Thing is gonna make it. So they didnt wanna spend lots of money so they put a bit more money then usual into the stage

  • I would pay good money to catch a glimpse at those EQ settings so i could punch them into my Blues Deluxe, the better amp of the two IMO, between the HRD and the BD.

  • I like his older concerts. Circa 2002. There aren't really many videos of them other than Any Given Thursday. I like this rendition of Covered in Rain better than what I've heard recently. Of course, AGT had the best version.

  • AGT does have the best version of this song, and this is definitely one of his best songs...except Where The Light Is is definitely his best concert...pretty much the best concert in the history of amazing concerts :P

  • No more Ga Theatre... what a sad day

  • I agree with the tone being a little bright., but, he has since fixed that. It was cool to see matt on guitar and a different drummer, thanks for the post.

  • is that matt mangano on the guitar??

  • I really like this tone though, i can only get it when i turn my amp to the brightest setting it can go.

  • I think its the SRV model. This was long before he got is signature strat. See the reverse trem.

I think the amp is too bight to be anything bassmen drived. Its more likely a vibroverb/lux or something similar.

  • It is the SRV model. Peep the gold hardware. This could've been back when he was using a Fender Deluxe/Deville?

  • you can very clearly see the HRD behind him

  • its not srv guitar< its his one.............that just looks like the srv one

  • its not. His signature wasnt created untill after the heavier things album.

this is 3 years before it.

  • this is a mayer guitar, not the srv.

  • Get your facts right.

John Mayers signature wasnt even created in 2002. This is the srv signature. gold hardware. left hand tremolo.

  • WHy isn't he using his own signature model sometimes? Anyone know a video where he actually uses it....or a few videos would be cool

  • they dont make signature models for the artist, they make them for the fans. so they can own a "piece" of their favorite artist. why would he use a guitar design to look like the one he uses? he has the original right there. no need for a "somewhat" copy.....

  • thats not even true, fender does a deal with them where they can make a custom with all the specs they want...and they use it because its a guitar they want...but people can buy it too

  • no. its this guitar (SRV STRAT). maybe the upside down tremolo is too subtle for you crazed fans who think you actually own a guitar like the one he plays, but the signature on the headstock should give it away just fine... the mayer strat has his sig on the back. not the front.

  • This was in 2002...he got his signature model after heavier things 2005 before TRY! theres a bunch of him playing his signature..try Wheel..

  • Good love is on the way from Where the light is

  • Is he using a hot rod deluxe? this tone is soo smooth

  • SRV Signature guitar

  • hes using fender deville, the 4x10 speaker version

  • i love the clean tone of those fender amps, i almost bought one because of it.

  • hahaha i have the deville but its the blues deville one, sounds more close to a hendrix full sound

  • no its too small t be a deville 4x10, its a hot rod

  • yeah you are right its a hot rod deluxe 1x12

  • is that a fender supersonic behind the guy on the left?

  • 2:33-2:44 never gets old....

  • are there more videos of this concert in georgia theater?
