The microphone thing is a bit weird, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters kind of does the same thing when he sings (though I've never seen him actually eat the mic). What actually happens is, the closer you put your mouth to the mic, the higher the bass response is and your voice sounds bigger and deeper.
