  • sonic youth there at the end!!!

  • Young Wayne looks like a food service worker.

  • I have no doubt that the lads in Nirvana studied the first Lips record inside and out...a brilliant record..Here It Is.

  • That's a young Wayne Cohen

  • is that wayne?

  • Not a great Nirvana cover and not a great cover by the flaming lips, still a great production.

  • All of the people dissing FL for covering Nirvana dont like music. Dont get me wrong I love Nirvana, they were a great, but how many of you people dissing the Flaming Lips actually listened to Nirvana in 1990 before Nevermind, hell how many of you were older than 8 when Kurt was alive. Dont put down a band for being creative, and fuck on off back to your Justin Bieber, and shit

  • @dopplerdoesnotlikeu I'm a fan of both. And this is a kick ass cover. I agree with you 100%.

  • Man he really tried on the screaming you can tell but he didn't pull it off

  • @NirvanaNerd364 I doubt that he was trying to "pull it off". I think they were just having fun with it.

  • @TheFiyahfly Mmm yeah okay.

  • @NirvanaNerd364 It's true, The Flaming Lips are a far superior band

  • @TheFiyahfly Well i really like both bands so I don't differentiate the two with superior or worse.

  • wow where did you get this never have i seen LIps covering this...im sure they knew each other back in the day...WOW Ronald jones.....this is a good jam

  • 2:36 rocking mouse

  • don't like this voice =(

  • Holy shit

I actually watched the whole video Amazing cover it feels soooo 90's

  • Dude, Michael looks badass.

  • RONALD JONES!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the most 90's thing I've seen in my life.

  • nice song

  • I was expecting this to be a lot worse. Nobody can cover Nirvana especially Tori Amos. Flaming Lips, on the other hand, are one the best bands in the world. They can do whatever the fuck they want.

  • Ahhh his vocals are so bad for this song haha but I love him so it's acceptable.

  • parecen bush

  • @kurtgrunge1 no mames

  • Nice move with the Lung Leg/EVOL shot at the end.

  • @TheMisterFranks i bet you feel like a dumbass.

  • That duct tape screems style.

  • If I could get a poster from that show I'd shit myself. Two amazing bands. I agree with 65neu and the patients guy. Great band covering a great band, and they're friends. If anyone hates, they need a new brain.

  • The flaming lips are kinda like Gary oldman, but with music.

  • damn this is a great cover

  • @TheMisterFranks

its not a bowie song that was the man who sold the world. next time try knowing what youre talking about before posting

  • @TheMisterFranks

Is it? What David Bowie album is the song off of?

  • Wow Flaming Lips totally nailed this song. Seether also has some good covers of Nirvana. Great song. I read come as you are by Michael Azzarad, and i rem it saying Kurt Cobain really liked the flaming lips, they were one of his influences in music.

  • NICE! didnt know they had it in them. BUT they sure do.

  • I love this band.

  • what kind of guitar is ronald playing?

  • @fruitbatrepublic a fender jaguar! I just looked that up last week

  • a noble effort

  • The Flaming Lips were around before Nirvana, But Bleach extremly influenced The Flaming Lips, enough that they eventually signed to a mjaor label Warner Bros. But they have moved on into their own ways since, parralel To Pavement who came around around the same time as Nirvana.. Before Nirvana came around, The Flaming Lips were similar to the Birthday Party Nick Cave kinda stuff.

  • when was this ?

  • Comment removed

  • oh my God!!!!!!!!!!!!!this is AWESOME.....

  • of all bands i have heard do a good nirvana cover, which would be puddle of mudd and seether suprisingly, this band just made my list. i was surprised but open minded when i saw this video. im glad i clicked on it and im certainly glad that nirvana made such an impact

  • Flaming Lips were covering Nirvana songs before anyone even heard of Nirvana. They used to cover Nirvana songs from 'Bleach' in 1990 & they played gigs together in the underground scene! Get your facts straight you stupid kids! NIRVANA CAME AFTER Flaming Lips. The Flaming Lips already had albums out before Nirvana were even a band. Nirvana opened for the F'Lips in 1989 and they were cool with each other so whats wrong with friends covering each others songs? Duh?

  • @65neu Yeah, you're absolutley right. Didn't the Lips form like 6mos before Kurt and Co. cut Bleach? LOL.

  • @redshaftedflicker Further back than that. Lips began in 1983 (according to the ever reliable Wikipedia).

  • @Nogli You're absolutely correct-my comment was to be tongue in cheek--yeah I can get pretty cheeky sometimes

  • Why do the children bicker so? Can't they accept that the people in the bands they are defending and bashing actually liked each other's music, and had respect for their differences and similarities. Besides there is nothing to prove or disprove, it's art and therefore subjective. It's nice that we have so many opinions, but far less so that we are all so opinionated.

Why don't you start a little troll/fanboy war over the Sonic Youth album cover they show at the end?

  • really no reason for the lips to cover nirvana. nirvana is a great band but the flaming lips took their music a lot further than nirvana ever did.

  • funny 2 c wayne try to sound like kurt

  • I like this

  • This sucks, we do better nirvana covers

  • @Curmudgeon87 Hahaha, i hope youre kidding. You probably suck butt hole milk.

  • @supermanaise I liked that term butt hole milk it made me laugh, still, you need to learn to accept other music and not act like camel stool.

  • Fuckin' A this rocks!!

    Thanks for posting it.

Anyone know if this is pre or post Kurt's death?

  • @CaptainPillowMusic

I think it was at the end of 1994, but not sure

  • No thankyou.

  • hmmm do you think he has toast with his tea?

  • @blonkyman Yeah, but he doesn't use jelly, cheese, or any of these. He uses vaseline.

  • Yow man. They're so young. Fuck, almost twenty years.

  • i see u guys are arguing no surprise there but the fact of the matter is i'm sure kurt would've loved this cover being that he was a flaming lips fan

  • I'm lovin the sonic youth poster at the end!

    I miss ronald jones.

  • great cover, they made the song their own.

  • wow, ive seen cover bands in a pub play this song better

  • Nirvana was a truly great band. Their importance may create too large an expectation of their music, which it's fair to argue that they fulfilled. What I can't understand is the utter disregard for the Lips. I can't stress this point enough. Get Clouds Taste Metallic. It will change your life. As for the use of record sales as a meter of quality: bullshit. My counter example being Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Maybe the best guitar music of the decade, and not a soul knows.

  • @thedicepticons yeah u can make a million dollars in the music industry and not know a thing about music. Music is 10% music 90% marketing. Just look at kiss or lady gaga.

  • Nirvana was cool enough, the Pixies were way cooler, the Flaming Lips are at times geniuses and at times shit. Fuck 'em all and go listen to some Dinosaur Jr.

  • I really dont understand the nirvana hate. They were always the first to say they were just some dumb band that got more credit than they deserved. If you wanna pick on someone pick on Pearl Jam. Thats the overbloated rock cliche, if it werent for nirvana Gun n Roses would still be king of the turd sandwich.

  • @spacelingokc ... nirvana hate ... if you dont like the band , fine .. whatever , its art , its subjective .... but I think a lot of people really do like nirvana but dont like the fact that about 100 million other people ( literally ) also like nirvana ..... you know .. " i liked them until they became famous and sold out " ...that sorry fucking bullshit excuse .... hipsters .... go fuck yourselves

  • @spacelingokc actually, it'd be best to not pick on anyone. the flaming lips make beautiful music, while nirvana makes amasing songs that have had significant influence in the modern music world, and i am not a pearl jam fan, but I know how it feels to make music that becomes the most important thing in the world to me, and then have some punk kid laugh at it, and call it stupid. It's not a good feeling.

  • @spacelingokc You are one stupid asshole. Leave Pearl Jam alone, they are among the best groups in history.

and Nirvana (although cool) did not have anything to do with GNR's success. Idiot.

  • Actually, the Lips were founded in 1983, making them as old a Cobain was when he died, This video dates from about when Cobain died, as Ronald Jones is playing lead guitar. Steve Drozd is playing drums, having replaced Nathan Roberts in 1992, but before he started playing guitar and keyboards.

  • shits. a better band doing what could have been a great band. I don't know what that means by the way.

  • It's almost like he's making fun of kurt.

  • I wonder if Wayne Coyne ever looks back on videos like this and thinks "Man, I wish I still had color in my hair."

  • @crazy8rgood OH, Wayne used to dye his hair all the time. I lost track of how many colors t's been, I think he likes the "weird, but cool, college professor" look. Never could figure out his whims when I hung out with them in OKC - like most, I just figured Wayne was Wayne,,,.

  • The Flaming Lips have been a band longer than Kurt Cobain lived. I was going try and be grown up and say there's no point comparing the two, but fuck it. The Flaming Lips are a much better band than Nirvana was. When ever I'm in the mood for some Nirvana, I just listen to some Pixies. Let's have it, you angstie bastards.

  • After much consideration, I take that back. They are too different to compare, and really there's no point in thinking that any one band is better or worse than any other. I forget that the Lips are virtually made of angst. Apologies all around.

  • @thedicepticons Don't get all bent out of shape DUDE. Kurt would have agreed with everything you just said.

  • @thedicepticons .... haha , ok then ...I`ll take the bait .... opinions are like assholes right ..everyone has one .... you are entitled to your opinion about nirvana , the Lips , the Pixies and everyone else .... but there is one thing that says nirvana is better than the Lips and the Pixies .... sales ... I know people dont like to talk about that when they are talking about bands with integrity but its the elephant in the room and its a tangible measuring stick

  • Flaming Lips are a much better band than Nirvana was

    -thedicepticons

If you believe that then you're RETARDED!!! The Flaming Lips are a wannabe RETARDED version of Nirvana (Kurt Cobain)

  • @LSweet2007 HOLY SHIT!!! You actually believe that listen to The Soft Bulletin, Embryonic, Transmissions From The Satellite Heart, Clouds Taste Metallic, and Hit To Death In The Future Head. Then come back here a repent for your musical sin. TFL are miles better than Nirvana ever could be plus the only reason they're even known today is because Kurt offed himself and you know it. Or you could check out the Pixies which is the band who's style Nirvana basically stole.

  • @LSweet2007 The Flaming Lips have been and are many things. The fact that they appreciated and wanted to emulate Nirvana is clearly demonstrated by this video. The 2007 in your screen name might be a graduation date, but I'm more inclined to believe that it's the year or your birth, because only a three-year-old would so pompously diagnose a person with mental retardation based on their taste in musical groups.

  • @LSweet2007 Thats ridiculous, they are not even the same genre.

  • @LSweet2007 What? Are you serious? FL are psychedelic music. Wannabe Nirvana? GTFO my internet.

  • I love the Lips, and I love Nirvana. And I love this cover.

  • It would be great if it wasn't for the singing. I thought they did a much better job on their cover of 'School.'

  • why cover a band so soon - this must not have been very long after Nirvans actually did this song. Seems like they didn't have enough original stuff. Now they're going off on Pink Floyd. I love em and all but this cover sucks and really don't care for alot of the Pink Floyd covers.

  • Nirvana once opened for the Flaming Lips during their old days, Flaming lips said they were the worst band they'd ever seen.

    now look at this

  • @jocobain21 OH, do I have a story to tell here... In the summer of 1990, Nirvana was supposed to play in Norman< OK at a show put on by future Lips' manager Scott Booker. The shitheads never showed up! I was working that show and we had to tell the very unhappy crowd that Nirvana wasn't anywhere to be found. Wayne Coyne was at the show and and we ended up drinking Nirvana;s booze,,,

  • Nice cover, really enjoy Flaming Lips... but original Nirvana is better, no one can disagree! But FL did a GREAT job! Kudos for adding a new sound to a great song!

  • decent.

  • nirvana who?

  • what does waynes button say?

  • I "heart" Michelle

  • @Hankandthetanktops A nod to his wife....

  • steve drozd is amazing. he probably knows how to play more instruments (good) than 99% of all musicians.

  • Except John Paul Jones, but thats ok since JPJ isn't even human when it comes to music.

  • you meant Wayne's voice < Kurt's voice

  • this looks like it was filmed in an access television studio. which means its probably ripped off of an old home tape. which makes this twice as rad.

  • lol he looks like johnny depp

  • What kind of guitar is the second guitarist using (pardon me; I don't his name.. it's not Steven?)

  • That's Ronald Jones...he usually used a jaguar...don't know what hes playing here

  • it might be a supro of some sort-

  • i thank thats a harmony

  • This is an awesome cover with the exception of the treble-lacking vocals.

  • It's Grohl you moron, and he rocks.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • that was tubular !

  • my two most fav thing sin one, nirvana and the flaminglips

    awsome!

  • ...it looks like wayne is having fun roughenating the lyrics...

  • Man, I love Wayne, but those vocals are rough...

  • Certainly no worse than Cobain's.

  • well... no k.c. was a very good singer with a little gravel, which was fitting in the music he made. wayne's voice is sort of weak, but he took advantage of it and pioneered his own style,

  • The shiznit

  • Whoa.... this is going to get a million views!

    Hey Ronald Jones,.you rock!

  • How old is this?

  • from 94 or 95
