It's a legend in Europe and elsewhere (SA)... they weren't imported in large numbers to America. In total nearly 189,000 were built, saving BMW from receivership and takeover by Mercedes. The basic suspension design is the archetype for all modern BMWs, and regarding motorsport, these dominated their class for several years.
8steriegriffin may not know about or have ever seen one, but it's influence and importance in the company are hardly exaggeration.
It's truly amazing to realize and see what BMW can produce now a days with their M Power engines once you watch this video... showcasing their lineage in a car with 30hp.
LoL, imagine someone going back in time to those german races, with a 318 or 518. Then everybody would have been shocked about them "Holy crap, over 100hp?". And nowadays, people would just say "Hahhah, just a bit over 100hp?".

To be honest with you, I've never seen any of these, haven't even heard of this model. A legend? Slight exaggeration.

I guess there is truth and wisdom in the old adage - It's not how you start that matters, it's how much Power you can produce Now that counts.
