  • I just want to make sure that everyone understands that - FUS RO DAH!

  • Yay for John Ritter, the dragon's voice.

  • When the dragon said "for crying out loud" I thought he was going to say "oh f**k"

  • If dragons relied on limestone and diamond for their flying and fire-breathing abilities then surely they would reach a point of "peak" diamond and limestone -- much like we're reaching a point of "peak" oil, where we've used up oil supplies far faster than it can form naturally.

  • @RossSimsProductions Read up on the formation of diamonds and limestone first, please, before you go making any hypothetical correlations of similarity to a trendy-to-talk-about "non-renewable resource." You just might be amazed at what you learn.

  • @OceanFire9

Diamond forms in the earth's crust under great heat and pressure, it is unknown how long they take to form but they are very rare and hard to get to. Limestone is the compacted sediment made from the skeletons and shells of tiny animals, it is very common but does that hundreds of thousands of years to form. Point being, there are better ways of getting calcium than chewing up rocks -- e.g. dragons might break up and swallow the bones of animals they eat as well as the flesh.

  • @OceanFire9 Did I write hundreds of thousands? I meant tens of millions. It's been a long time since college.

  • XD

  • ...I believe I have just witnessed my personal approach to fantasy literature summed up to me in just under four minutes.

  • I like how they growl when they talk :)

  • To review- dragons require gems in order to grind up the limestone they eat to make fire. These gems are aquired by robbing dwarf mines. No gems means they screw up their teeth and/or stomachs eating unbroken limestone. Thus the decline of the dwarves is directly responsible for the disappearance of dragons.

    Elves are to blame.

  • @TheDoctorofOdoIsland crap thats like us with oil!

  • @MikesEmbassy You mean elves are responsible for America's dependence on foriegn oil?

  • @TheDoctorofOdoIsland lol when gems got to 10$ a bag and EPA forced carbon emissions Dragons had to migrate to Pern...politics who needs em

  • I love this movie. Good film. I love dragons and I have to admit the way they did the explanation of how their fire breathing and flying makes it sound like they could really existed, which deep inside I love to think ^^

  • @Star13570 if only there was a facebook for dragon lovers

  • @TheDreamCavalcade That would be awesome.

  • Ahhh shut up and eat your limestones!

  • I love how the old dragon is right to the point. "We're dragons! And dragons breathe fire!" LOL! Genius!

  • I'm gonna have to start eating moree rocks and robbing more dwarves..... this is rock solid logic!!

  • This film is on my top ten favorite list. I wish they made animated movies like this still! Any suggestions?

  • Anyone else get a mental image of Gorebash at the typewriter?

  • Shut up and eat your limestone.

  • Oops... if he doesn't know how to breath fire yet -- how is he burning that tree branch at 2:02

  • @cortezopossum He knows "how' to breath fire, he just didn't know why. Like when you were three years old. You knew how to take a leak, but chances were you thought it had more to do with your personal entertainment rather than as a necessary function.

  • Can anyone upload the whole movie on youtube please, i'm tired of people putting full movie or part one on a video and its the stinking trailer.

  • @JackassJunior627 Remember about copyright. I know I'm tired of trailers & clips, but really. (U know what I mean) I: i

  • Wow. O_o Is this a kid's show? Because those are some pretty big words for such an audience.

  • "NEVER HAD DIAMONDS IN YOUR CRAW?"

  • 0 Ommadon disliked the video. Beacaus he's dead, lol.

  • This film made me who I am today.

  • @Ookani same with me amazing how much impact animated dragons can have on a person

  • @Ookani do tell

  • Next time someone complains to me about something I'm going to say "WHAT'S THE MATTER, NEVER HAD DIAMONDS IN YOUR CRAW?"

  • How do dragon's drink with all that fire in their bellies? I don't care if they're mythical; all living thing things need to drink water in order to exist.

  • @67nairb Because it's not fire until the hydrogen is ignited by their Thor's Thimble. The hydrogren isn't 'in their bellies' either, it's stored in special compartments like how air is stored in our lungs. You can swallow water and breath without issue, can't you? Their digestive system is seperate from their respiratory and inflation systems.

  • @Ookani Thanks for the info. Ya know something? With the knowledge you've given to me and what I've learned from this cartoon I believe that it wouldn't be implausible for dragons to exist in one way or another.

  • do you think you could upload the whole movie?

  • "Ah shut up and eat your limestone."

  • "Why does it come out as fire?"

"BECAUSE WE'RE DRAGONS! AND DRAGONS BREATHE FIRE!" hahaha!!!!

  • "Don't talk with your mouth full" best bit ever did dragon's teach human's manners

  • lol, "ah shutup and eat ur limestone" XDXDXD

  • This movie that started my fascination with the fantasy genre.

  • What he didn't explain is how he can form such complex sounds with that wormlike tounge!

  • If this were taken as seriously as they took Peter Jackson's LOTR movies then yes I'd love to see this as a live action movie. Otherwise, no because I'd rather only have this than a bad film based on it. And it's sufficiently different from the Tolkien works(what with the inclusion of some modern day stuff) that it COULD fill a much needed gap in fantasy filmmaking. The Narnia books/movies did that also but here there's no christian allegory, or ANY allegory really to divide people over.

  • This is the only scene that I remembered from watching it when I was 7 or 8... And it's STILL the only scene from the movie worth remembering!!!!!

  • That would be really cool if this made a live action movie, but I have to agree with Korisoup. If the person that remakes this would be really carefull not to screw it up I'd watch it. Granted I'd still by it even if was terribly made.

  • If you enjoyed this video maybe you would to see my hand drawn animated videos,MAGIC ARROWS and BALDER'S EGG on my channel page on you tube! I drew them by hand and they have centaurs, merpeople, a dragon and a sea serpent in them! Thanks for the video!

  • I remember this movie. While I did not take it as much to heart as The HOBBIT OR RETURN OF KING from Rankin Bass I do remember the author being turned into adragon and his learning their flying ability which he wrote in his book. A clever way of turning the book into a fantasy tale! These 3 films are much better then Peter Jacksons draged out Lord of the RINGS movies or the Last Unicorn! You could look at my animated video,The Magic Arrows that I made on my channel page! It has a dragon!

  • @amm019 To answer your third question: 1) it's "Thimble", not "symbol". And 2) it is most likely a small protrusion in the dragon's mouth consisting of iron and other conductive metals within the body of the dragon. Since they consume limestone, they also probably consume flint, which gets caught in/near the thimble. Vibrations from the dragon belching would cause the Thimble to hit the stone and send sparks flying, thus lighting the hydrogen and producing fire.

  • @soraos21 As far as I understand the Thor's Thimble is a nerve cluster that discharges a static charge much like an electric eel.

  • @luchao the authors of this film would be so happy to know people are still watching these scenes and following their creativity! legends of their own time..

  • @luchao this is my understanding as well.

  • @luchao Yeah that's what I thought too considering Thor is the Norse god for lightning, hence the term ^^.

  • I always really liked the art in the film, I don't think it should be messed with. I hate CGI and I don't want to see this turned into another terrible CGI remake.

  • Oh, never mind about the "hydrogen in stomach" problem. The honey-combed muscle and bone that expands kinda defeats the problem that bloated animals deal with. When they eat rich food or something, the bacteria in their gut create a unnatural amount of gas, making their bellies bloat. When they bloat, their stomachs can't expand very well and they could die if they don't get the medicine and walked. Dragons have solved this problem with the honey-combed deal and the fire-breathing.

  • A couple things I'm curious about:

-How can a dragon take care of the hydrogen when it's in the stomach?

-How can a dragon hunt with it particularly looking like a ballon?

-The electricity thing is possibly like a electric eel, but is the symbol thing shaped like a taser?

  • This movie had one of the most brilliant voice-acting casts of it's time.

  • aw shutup and eat your lime stone!

  • actually the morale of the story is to have faith in what you believe in to overcome, no matter how incredible the situation. To those who think this film is ugly : of course its old you idiots! its from the 80's but its still brillaint!

  • nice!!you learn while you watch

  • This is the movie (and this part in particular) that showed me that it was POSSIBLE that dragons actually COULD HAVE existed. And gave me the science behind the possibility. Can you imagine what a stroke of genius it took to figure out the science involved in the dragon fire and their ability to fly? I will never forget the green wizards line "...good would be completely impotent without the contrast of evil." Morale of the story #1.

  • Do you think this film would be good as a modern live action film?

  • I could see it working, but it would need some serious special effects for me to be convinced.

  • It's just...this film is very ugly looking and it's a little embarrasing to watch with others so adding new effects and better designs would make it sensational. Just like 'Rein of Fire'.

  • @boru25 In fairness, it was made about 30 years ago. Have you actually watched it?

  • @luchao As long as well follow this plot from this film, we should have no problem making a sequel that's live-action. In fact, maybe a prequel might do the trick.

  • @luchao WHom would you cast for such a film?

  • @luchao

Like the special effects James Cameron used in Avatar? And if they do make it into a live-action film, who would be the best one to film it?

  • It would be nice, but this is one of those Cartoons that should stay as a cartoon.

  • @boru25

I'd rather they didn't. Hollywood hasn't done a very good job so far of not mutilating my childhood memories thus far.

  • @boru25 Absolutely Not. They would definitely mess it up - not to mention that we already have this to enjoy!

  • Yea dispite how messy it looks ....ya know I can't really watch this for that reason. Simple because my brother hates me watching cartoons so I try not to fall in love with them. That's why I ignore Studio Ghibil films.

  • I loved this movie when I was 7 and this scene was one of the reasons why... This was a uniquely intelligent and thought-provoking childrens' film that encouraged scientific inquiry into matters deemed mysterious.

I also thought it funny that fierce dragons of mythology would basically be hot-air balloons.

  • I loved this movie when I was younger too. Did you know the same guy that did Smrgol's voice did Bryagh's too?

  • @Totallywild624 no i didnt but i agree 24 yrs later still the best!

  • @DChatc Very haha
