dont know the measurement but you gotta think...the person with sliding riggers isnt going to make the boat rock fore and aft like all the other scullers and that makes a huge! difference in overall boat speed as the bow will digg alot less.
Right! And, consider that in 1983 boats were made much shorter on the stern (at least so they looked on TV from Duisburg, I've never seen one live) so the overall wet surface was lower and so was the drag. Kolbe stated 8'' in a later interview (google for 'sliding riggers')
Reiche won easily this race without sliding riggers, ahead of Yakusha (second in Moscow behind Karppinen) who had sliding riggers. Reiche then adopted the sliding riggers a few months later for the worldchampionship in Lucerne and it didn't to make any difference between him and Yakusha.
