  • I think Funky Popcorn.

    Sex Machine, too.

  • I think Funky Popcorn.

  • youngblood Bootsy workin' that jazz bass, holdin' it like an upright ! Funkzilla himself in the early FUNK development stage of his life as the ultimate FUNKmaster of the universe !

  • The whole set is on a CD called "Love, Power, Peace".

Bootsy Collins was absolutely on fire in this show. The whole band is phenomenal. Possibly the greatest live recording of all time. If you haven't heard it, run, don't walk, to Amazon and order it. You won't regret it.

  • It´s a shame this is not the best copy of this concert. James brown is just marvelous!!

  • @fritzz45 somehow, I learned, when I first saw this a couple years ago, from one of the comments, that there IS INDEED a pristine copy of it available, and I BOUGHT it online. but 1. I lost it. 2. I don't remember where I got it. BUT, yes, its from a THREE DAY engagement, and one of the other two nights is the album "Love Power Peace." enjoy

  • @Stimulator7 thx for the info bro. do you know of any other JB jams that Bootsy is on ? peace and blessings.

  • 3:42 like the second coming.Thats it the end

  • This concert is love power and peace cd released a few years ago. GET IT!!!

  • I found the CD of this gig in a second hand shop, best live CD ever! Maybe someone should dub the CD to the VT! ... ah saying that the CD doesn't have the bass solo :(

  • @gawpertron yeah I was gutted after getting the CD that Bootsy's bass solo wasn't there :-(

  • this is as good as it gets... brothers got the rap

  • The transition at 3:40 is just awesome, never saw this in my life! That was the funkiest band on earth...

  • @Popoldabboy dat wuz pritty friggin amazin......

  • this is one of the best CD's Ever! Even though this is a bit different from the CD its so Awesome to see him in action during this time. The best band and the best period of time for JB.

  • Whoa, musicians used to have talent? Oh....mah....gawd!

  • Real music ladies & gents.......Although I wasn;t born.....I must have remembered hearing while the ole-byrd was caring me at the concert...or walking around with the old-dude in his sacs; however....this is talent by all the musicians on stage.......that 79 concert in Montery,Cali...now another bomb-shell.

  • 3:43

  • This is one of the three albums I'd take to the desert island. I remember buying it in 1997 and BAM. Ain't It Funky Now hit me once, then BAM. Fred Wesley's trombone solo hit me twice. This stuff rocks-----it's what heavy bass is SUPPOSED to sound like, not the wanton thumping you hear today. Saw JB at a small tent in 1998-----800 people or so----and snuck into the front row. Even the starchiest collars were nodding heads. Also check out "Can't Keep a Good Man Down" on youtube. It's a groove.

  • Is Bootsy Collins human?

  • the jb's can be equated with any other band, on any level of talent and discipline in their individual playing abilities. rip catfish.

  • I've watched this clip so many times i've lost count,it has to be the tightest, coolest bunch of musicians on the planet, EVER! I could watch Jabo Starks play the drums all day, and as for Bootsy, well he's coolness personnifed! Oh and he can play a ganga bass too! Why can't funk music/music in general be like this anymore??!!

  • haha! Look at Bootsy! What a legend! Big lanky dude just groovin' and boppin' his head to the beat. He's all legs and afro! haha! So cool. 7:35 to 7:50... he's just in the zone.

  • That backing band is phenomenal. Absolutely stunning how good they were.

  • This is the funkiest thing I've ever heard!!!!!!!!

  • RIP Catfish

  • Take me to the bridge - simple OUTRAGES!

  • James in his prime was untouchable, and the band was tight, rip mr brown.

  • la source de mon jeu de batterie! a l'age de 14ans je m'enfermait des heures pour danser sur les disques de james brown! c'est notre papa a tous! infinis remerciements a mon maitre du groove!!! didier d'agostino batteur sur youtube.

  • R.I.P. Catfish Collins 1944 – August 6, 2010

  • R.I.P Catfish

  • god created the music and the music created the JB's

  • Brother Rap, I think, is his best song!

  • Wow i never saw this video. I had the album of this performance. Somebody should take the album and put it to this footage. The quality on that record is excellent. The drums sound nice and the energy is so high even though you cant see what's going on.

  • Any hard work, any workout, anything I need to do hard and good and LONG....I put this on and I'm superhuman. Thank you James Brown!

  • one of the sublime pinnacles of funk captured in Paris no less. It is said then when all of our technology is gone all that will be left is carvings in caves. Some one carve James Brown creator of FUNK. 3:43 is a show stopping moment.

  • Great song. Too bad he beat his wife like some down and out hillbilly.

  • DAMN IT! SO FUNKY!

  • Agreed....This is the real shit,a real entertianer and one bad ass band.Makes the hair stand up on end!

  • Catfish is baaaad! And the great Fred Wesley laying down that trombone, with Bootsy holding the groove and James on the funky organ. Yeah!

  • Man, this is...too much! I can't take all the funk!!! And Bootsy is just fantastic.

  • Nothing today is as real as this.....

  • The quality of this tape is really bad. Last year the quality here was really good! What happened ???

  • @shindings1

I remember that too and wish that far better version would be put on YouTube, again. So, Brother Rapp together with Ain't It Funky, with the fantastic transition.

Of course this will do until then ;-)

  • @andzwe and @shindings1

I managed, but I forget how, to buy a complete DVD of this entire performance, in color, and better looking and all. try searching for it, and If I "find" my copy (its misplaced like all my other shit,) I'll write ya back and tell ya...

    BUT-

the Album "LOVE POWER PEACE" is also this concert.

(it was, so I heard, a 3 night event, and Love Power Peace is from one of the other nights. same killer trans from brother rapp to aint it funky now.)

    ten bucks on itunes. enjoy!

  • @6:50 check out the brotha behind the trombone player......he's funkin it! Gotta love it!

  • bootsy found out along wit fonk comes dat weeeeed....thurr fore....parliament wuz born......

  • is big than fucking obama

  • At 3:38 He screamed like an animal in the Jungle! You knew something was going to go down. Amazing. Dosen't get better

  • He was everything, that's what funk & soul is. Never be another. Where ever you are JB, you were it!

  • that would be a good show to have seen

  • check out young BOOTSY! you can't learn what he's got, it's a gift from GOD!

  • The Original FunkMaster....there will never be another like him.

  • Comment removed

  • la foule etait aussi tres receptive des choses se passaient a cet epoque a paris!!

  • Catfish puts down the funky rhythm guitar at 4:41...Who knew he would later lay down the funky rhythm for the classic "Flashlight"

  • Outstanding section - listened to this 4 times tonight!

  • Bootsy was 17 years old.

  • tighter than dicks hatband!!! when they segue into aint it funky now , i get a musical woodie!!! lol

  • LOL Yeahhhhh.

  • BAD!! Dosen't get better

  • Killer! Doesn't get any better than this. Bootsy is great, but don't forget about his brother Phelps on guitar!

  • You're watching James Brown at at his absolute peak here.

  • That's Bootsy Collins playing the bass guitar.

  • This has to be JB's absolute peak. He's a little chunky by now, but between the band and they way he's leading it, it's just too much. I agree with the other comment that this is the greatest band ever.

  • MASTERPIECE.

This is up there with Mozart.

  • Smokin' Catfish guitar solo !

  • BOOTSY ROCKS!!!!

  • When James Brown was born his FIRST words were "Hey, Hey Heyyyyyyyyy !!"

    SOUL BROTHA #1 ~ R.I.P.

  • James had enough soul for the entire planet. This man was/is soul/funk,really miss the Godfather. R.I.P

  • This is the best band on the planet. I don't care if you're rocking the Emerson Quartet, or ...I don't care if you were with the Texas Playboys. Maybe Miles had a better band, but MIles wanted some of this , too...

  • Damn good comment Micahb2

  • @Micahb2 Miles sure as hell DID want somma'this. I do believe, Miles wished to have "somma'this" in the Bitches Brew period. yah. the funk

  • Incredible!

  • So this is the NEW band after the great old one all quit due to JB's relentless drill sergeant act proved too much. Lousy recording, too bad, neither Bootsy nor the guitar solo ( a first) can be be properly appreciated.

  • look at the trumpet player at 6:50

    he is gettin it!!!!!!!!!

  • Fred wesley ladies and gentleman FRED WESLEY!!

  • BOOOOOTSY ON BASS!!!!!!!!

  • The first song is called '' Brother Rapp'' then at 3:43 comes "Ain't it funky now" song

  • Bootsy Collins!

  • keeep on slippin/ sliddin, Mr. Dynamite!!

  • What kind of Guitar is Catfish playing?

  • @retsevlis It's a Vox Ultrasonic

  • ほぼ最強JBsですね。

    ブーチーコリンズ、ファンキードラマークライド、ジョンジャボ、フレッドウェズリー

    キャットフィッシュ、ボビーバード、チーズマーティン、セントクレア、親分MRブラウン

  • Words just can't explain, just that nothing like this will never ever come back again ever.

  • Holy FUNK ! What a classic JB stuff ! Anyone knows the title of this track ? Lovin' it ! Always a pleasure to him on the organ (so inspiring when you are a Hammond player yourself...)

  • its a medley, one of the songs is "aint it funky now" (which starts at 3:44). Dont know the names of the rest of the songs.

  • Flight of the conchords are probably the only musically sound band that is newer.

  • people do lay it down still, you just dont get to hear them because the record companies dont want the bands that are doing it. either the bands have bad attitudes and they can tell theyre not going to stay together or they just aren't going to sell because in general people tend to like music that isnt all that great for some reason or another. what they mean is there arent any great bands getting anywhere these days. shitty 90s bands are still what sells for some reason its not 1990 people!

  • Bootsie Collins on bass and his brother Catfish on guitar. That is one funky family!

  • anyone want to chat

    this video was good lc

  • just moved new area

    someone want to chat PD

  • GOOD LORD! When James punches the one into ain't it funky - that is the tightest tempo change ever......the guys were the orignal muthas.....!

  • It's a video not a clip

  • These videos are a bitch to find, I' m always having to track them down again after a few months. Thanks for putting this longer than ever clip up.

  • That was a REAL BAND!!!!!

  • Man nothing but absolutely nothing comes near this in todays world of music. Its incredible. Blows the mind how talented these guys were. Bootsy was only 20 years old! Just goes to show how far standards have fallen. That was James when he was on top of the music game. Whos top of the music game now? Pharrell? Timbaland? Bono? jokers the lot of em. This is what music is all about. Genius

  • I was agreeing with you until you got to Bono, what does he have to do with anything? U2 came out in the early 80s,when music was still good.

  • you are a loser... timbaland, pharrel,...BONO???thats all you can come up with, yr head is in the sand man. you just haven't kept up with new music. what, you think that talent went out with the 70's, like cats aren't puttin it down in every generation. u prolly only like th e music you grew up listening to, spoonfed ass fool

  • Comment removed

  • @nerp23 Absolutey. I look at Bootsy and James here and am just lovin' this performance. This is when music was fucking real...REAL. All the fake ass additives that go into making music today makes me want to puke. Our kids have no idea what's real music and what's fake because of today's music. A real damn shame.

  • @nerp23 Bootsy tearin' it UP back there! >>>WHEEEEEWW !!!!!!

  • @gblueslover2 All hail King Bootsy!! :)

  • @nerp23 No comparison. Listen to how hard those guys are working. Giving the people their money's worth. That's SHOWMANSHIP. Band's now could not keep up for a half a minute. They'd be left in the dust.

  • @nerp23 I agree with you Nowadays there a but a few.... But PRINCE RULES !!!! he is all of them combined into and even at 50 he still selling out stadiums ! I love him like a brother!

  • I THOROUGHLY enjoyed that, it's unexplainable what that did to my head. I was in a different place, no doubt.

    Thanks for posting!

  • I remember what France musical world was like in 1971!... This concert must have felt like an atom bomb!

  • how much genius can you cram on stage? so damned tough

  • you could tell James loved this rhythum section ...just way he looks at Catfish and Bootsy when they played...and of course he had Fred to lean back to for fire in the horn section

  • Anyone who plans to be a performer, needs to be on their knees thanking God that ther is video of james on stage.

If you can't put it down like this, stay the hell off of the stage!

  • god wish id seen him in71 the hieght of his powers

  • damn nobobdy got shit on this dude!!

  • Whenever I'm down & out or feeling low all I need is to listen to the Godfather and I come back strong with a tremendous boost of soul, funkm, and energy. I think about this man who came from nothing and how the Good Lord blessed him with talent and blessed me for living in this life to listen to the man. God Bless You JB. Your Spirit Still Lives On.

Ain't It Funky Now? Yes. Amen.

  • R.I.P. Clayton "Chicken" Gunnels (Trumpet)... The ever soulful James Brown knew where to find the funky talent like Bootsy and Clayton, Cincinnati.

  • The reason why he found them in Cincy is because his record label, KING, was located there.

He could have found that talent if he was on CHESS (Chicago) or STAX (Memphis)or Westbound (Detroit).

  • That's true srotagadirolf but some of the funkiest musicians come from the Midwest. Bootsy and those guys had done their home work. James Brown is highly respected in my circle of musician friends, young and old.

  • Bootsy! Bootsy! Bootsy!

  • the best

  • man this is the coolest shit I've EVER seen! DANG!

    this guy was GOD

  • I agree with you on that. Didn't know James Brown could play the organ like that. Awesome!

  • thank you for the power of the internet for i was born in '79 and you'd have to be extremely lucky to catch this jewel on television

  • Is it a very precious picture?

  • they were something!!!

  • Funky at the best level. I love Bootsy's solo.

  • r.i.p. godfather of soul

  • Pure Funk!!!!!

  • James Brown played the Olympia Theater for three nights. The album "Love, Power, Peace" was from another night.

  • play with bootsy

  • Great clip. I had to get up!

  • that's Bootsie Collins on the Bass.

  • G.O.D

  • So so BEYOND funky...it makes you cry... :)

  • The rill thing!

  • god DAMN that's funky!

  • Man...this is so awesome. Brother Rapp seems like its just a warm up. People in the audience are thinking, "OK, this is fun. Maybe not as funky as I thought it was going to be, but it's cool" And then BAM they got hit with the face-melting jungle funk. The change is so abrupt it's amazing.

  • bootsy and catfish my main men...james was the best, seen him 8 times unreal every time. god rest his soul.

  • OMG!!! THAT BRUTHA WAS &%^%^^& INCREDIBLE. THAT BAND IS THE ULTIMATE!!!! Bootsy/Catfish(Collins) Fred Wesley. MAN!!!

  • Oooh..Dunno about that one..It s definetely his funkiest band but to say tightest. Hrm. His band in 68 was hands down one tight fuckin ship. Listen to Say it Live and Loud in Texas 68'. Scorching absolutely scorching. I like Paris, but to me its all about Texas in 68'.

  • This is vintage James Brown at his musical peek. You are watching James flexing his atristic muscle. This was his tightest band. They were all on one accord. Nobody was fined for missing a note during this concert. If only James could of made time stand still. James had no peers, he stood alone.

  • Dunno if the intro has a name... then Brother Rapp into Aint It Funky Now. Get the album Love Power Peace (of this concert) to hear 'em all.

  • "Dunno if the intro has a name... then Brother Rapp into Aint It Funky Now." The intro is "The Grunt."
