I thought George looked kind of pleased at the prospect of being taken away when the Doctor first introduced himself, which made it difficult for me to immediately accept the idea that the threat of being taken away is what had catalysed his fears. An unfortunate sticking point at the climactic moment.
im annoyed with the foreshadowing too. and i feel everyone dies and don't so i totally agree with your point on that. however, i really liked night terrors, the actor who played the father was really good.
Am I the only one who finds it weird how fast Amy and Rory have moved on from sort of losing Melody? I know that they know how she grows up and everything, because she grew up with them, but if it were me and my newborn daughter was taken away from me and then I didn't get to raise her... I dunno if I'd be able to go back to my normal life of having adventures with the Doctor right away; I'd need some time to deal with that.
@whitefluffyhat i was thinking exactly the same thing! like sure they grew up as kids together but thats completely different to actually raising your own child, even if they can get their heads round the fact that their childhood friend was their daughter and is now River. How can they just let go and move on!?
Yeah, I think you're right about the two-episodes thing.... I was kinda waiting for it to "really start" throughout most of the episode. And once it did "start" it ended right away!
I have the same problem with the self-awareness. It's like the whole "fezzes are cool" thing. The producers or the writers or whatever saw that the public loved it and went crazy over it so now they have to at least mention that line (or a derivation of it) at least once an episode. There's a difference between running gags and depending on certain jokes to not lose their audience.
Maybe I'm going mad, but did anyone else feel that Night Terrors was really similar to Fear Her? Scared child that's actually an alien, people getting zapped in, creepy nursery rhyme, child saved by the love of it's parent?
@artificiellexx Yeah now you mention it. I mean I really loved the episode, but I was underwhelmed by the fact that the story line wasn't that hugely original as episodes usually are.
I thought they did a good job making the episode creepy and scary, UNTIL... they turned Amy into a doll. As soon as that happened, the danger faced by the minor characters dissipated. Amy can't be permanently a doll, so neither could the old lady or the landlord or the little twin girls. Until that point, there was actually some concern that being "dollified" was equivalent to death.
If they keep referring to an event that we already saw happen in Episode 1, is it really foreshadowing?
I think that the end of the episode, the closing on the Doctor's date of death was more of a reminder that the Doctor has now seen that, he knows how and when he's going to die, when he didn't before. I think it was pretty powerful, and the "tick, tock goes the clock, even for the Doctor" was more a reminder that the Doctor has that knowledge constantly in the back (or front) of his mind now.
I also mostly liked the episode, and I didn't mind Rory mentioning his many deaths, but I absolutely HATED Amy becoming one of those dolls. It was even worse than Rory's many deaths. It did nothing fro the episode, and everyone knew from the moment it happened that everything would be okay, since no one made a big deal of it. It just...augh, this should of been a video response or something, because I just hated it that much.
I agree about the the climax being very anti, but I think having the characters be self aware of the constant deaths is brilliant. I love when shows have running gags. makes me miss buffy
I think they're doing the whole Doctor thing to build up suspense when they finally get to it. I know I can't wait, so I personally don't mind the whole Doctor death thing being reminded.
I wonder if there was anything to the fact that the doctor said that it was good that they were all together 'in the flesh' at the end. If not then disappointing.
my bigest complaint about this episode. what did Amy and Rory do...like at all? They were completely wasted from their first scene when there just standing around the TARDIS not interacting to the end. they have no reason for being there. like if the Doctor knew they got sucked in I feel like it would have risin the stakes a bit.
Am I the only one who found this episode very predictable? I mean, when Amy and Rory are in the elevator, they fall and end they find themselves in a new place I knew they were in a dollhouse, and then later when the Doctor opens the cupboard there it was! the dollhouse!
I liked this episode better than the previous one, it kind of reminded me the one with Mme. de Pompadour... but it was good, really good.
Well the dying thing already happened, so they might as well joke about it. And I mean, Doctor Who is a family show and not every generation spends time analyzing over these episodes like we do...so the repeated foreshadowing may just be for the young kids and the grandma/grandpa's benefits.
@darth3pio Nice pun, darth. Kayley hated that scene. She wished the ground would swallow her up :-)
London is excited she is visiting. They named a park for her. Kayley Park or something :-)
Yes, RTD subtle Bad Wolf thing was much better than a close up of the Doc's screen, or a huge crack. I feel for Rory saying he was dead, Amy should be out of sight, behind a desk or something.
Nobody mentions Moffat's cupboard agenda. Hitler in one, doll house in one. A conspiracy of Silence :-)
This episode was not scary...at all. The dolls were vaguely creepy when they were off screen, but as soon as they got on screen they were basically giggling zombies and it sucked SO MUCH.
Generally, Mark Gatiss episodes are my least favorite.
I'm hoping (and a bit worried) that everyone constantly almost (or actually) dying has a point eventually. To sort of desensitize us, and make us believe that none of them can possibly die, and that's when they actually kill somebody.
Plus, am I the only one that thinks there's something going on with that gigantic eye they found? There was a creepy hidden eye all the way back in Flesh and Stone, the eye rant in Almost People, and now this? MOFFAT WIZARDRY I SAY.
I really didn't like the episode, actually. I wasn't scared at all. Maybe it's because I don't have a fear of dolls, but I just wasn't frightened by any of it. It was extremely anticlimactic, which I found really irritating. I mean, I was thankful to have not seen River (love her, but I'm so sick of the whole plot thing), but it just wasn't what seemed up to the new DW standards. Moffat built it up, so it was kind of a flat episode.
I kinda found it hard to believe that Rory and Amy would still travel with the Doctor after they've basically lost their baby...I mean, they know she's River, they know she turns out okay-ish(lol)...but they've still basically lost a child. And yet they're still like, "YAY! IN TO TIME AND SPACE!"
WTF? Why is their TOP priority NOT their daughter? I mean they don't even mention her the entire episode...this episode just makes them both look like crap parents. Lol
@RnDFoever25 Yeah, I have to agree. :/ I love River & all but they didn't touch the baby being missing at all. Though she has been missing for... 6 months atleast (from the episode before). :/ Not sure, typically Doctor Who Time is normally pretty acurate, like month to month, etc. :/ Though the kid being scared because Rory said that they should just feed him to the monsters kind of bugged me as well. The kid was never told that to his face as a joke? I know I had when I was a baby. -.-; <3
I think this episode is getting unfairly bashed by some fans. It's a standalone episode that managed to be creepy especially for the kids. It's a good old fashioned behind-the-sofa episode and we need more like this. Yeah the ending was crap but other then that it was great... and much better then fear her which it's being compared to. Oh, and Kayley, you look nice with your hair pulled back ;)
Yeah I was convinced up until the last 10 minutes or so that it was going to be a two-parter with the first part ending with all of them trapped in the dollhouse .. and then suddenly everything was easily resolved! Definitely anti-climactic, though I enjoyed most of the rest of the episode.
I didn't like this episode. I LIKE RIVER! And I'm worried that next weeks episode will be too much like the other dream episode from season 5 (Amy's choice) so like "pick the real Amy" type thing. At least with the River plot it isn't repetitive, everything else seems to be.
I thought this episode was rather disappointing. For some reason I never felt scared at all, and for once I actually saw the end coming. It just seeped really obvious and over all fell rather flat.
The only thing that I really liked about this was the idea of the Doctor as a child psychologist. Is it just me or would the Doctor make the perfect child psychologist?
I thought this was a really poor episode. Reminded me of the Russel T Davies days *shudder*. The dad was really slapstick, the kid was suddenly pushed as an alien which I thought was unnecessary. Thought it'd be better if the boy confronted his fears rather than the dad being a sidekick.
Also, no mention of Melody? Fair enough not everyone likes that storyline but a nod towards the whole kidnapped baby thing would've been appreciated... :-/
I think Dr Whos are better as single episodes than two patters, the ending did feel a biiiit rushed but that's a pacing issue rather than a time issue. it will be remembered as a good'un me thinks.
Was better than last week's, but I agree about the pacing issues. Too much time foreshadowing, not enough time scaring.
One thing I'm getting fed up with about New Who is the 'wish hard and everything will be all better' ending. It's the same as the 'and they woke up and it was all a dream' ending, i.e. a massive, cheating cop out. The Doctor rarely has to actually do anything to save the day; I don't see the cogs turning and a genius plan coming together, and I think it masks poor writing.
It's funny, I think it was a little too slow-paced. Lots of anticipation, not enough payoff. xD I enjoyed it overall though! I definitely will have to rewatch it
I hate that it has such a prominent series story line that any episodes that don't fit in with it just seem out of place and like "fillers". Hitler could have been SUCH a good episode and they left it, this could have been such a good episode, and I didn't find it scary at all. I've never been scared of things like that anyway but certain things could have been better. Like a full snappy profile of the monsters like close ups of feet, arms, eyes, heads etc. I actually found it quite boring. :(
.....What i dont understand Is why did they felt the need to remake one of the worst Doctor Stories ever from the RTD era......"Fear Her". Even had the non-sense foreshadowing...they could've actually used tennants "Something...in the air" bit over the last shot. This rather long gap between what was a great ender "A good man goes to war" to these last two episodes. Leaves one with the feeling of ".......thats what we waited for?" Hope it picks up with the next episode.
Two parter= TOTALLY AGREE! I felt like they where trying to sell the effect with the guy being pulled into the floor. Kinda pointless, I liked the subtlety of the way the old lady got pulled in a lot more. I think rather than just showing the screen with the Doctor's death they should focus more on his reaction. He might be the Doctor, but Tennant didn't want to regenerate I doubt Matt would like the idea of finally dying.
I totally agree that it was such an Anti-Climax! I liked Rory's joke :D And the guy falling through the ground was rubbish. The song reminded me of this creepy horror story that went around my school. It creeped me out!!! I didn't like how it ended - the boy being the alien was kind of boring and I wish it had been more complex. I'm sure it looked more complex on the page than it did, for me, on the screen. :/ Overall = Good but a the ending was dull
I liked the fact that there was no River in this episode, and that it wasn't really part of the huge arc-story-thingy that they've got going on.It wasn't part of any build-up for something that is to come, and that was a pleasant break. The dolls were creepy, creepy, creepy. I laughed at Rory's joke, and I am worried as to how much my love for him just keeps increasing and there are no signs that it will ever stop.He is just amazing.
I thought for sure it was gong to be a two-parter and then.... it ended. What the hell? xD It was definitely anti-climatic like you said, but ignoring that, a solid episode. Dolls never get less creepy do they?
I agree with the quickness point, disagree with the Rory joke, but also agree that they should stop dying. And that melting through the floor was incredibly lame. I thought it was such a step up from last week, but probably because River Song wasn't in it being annoying... (AND... I got 20 votes today because I voted everyday and earned more votes... SO YOU GOT 20 VOTES! :D )
I agree with the anticlimactic feeling. I was also a bit bothered how Amy and Rory are no longer seemingly worried about the fact that their child is missing.
I really liked this ep. It was refeshing not to have river in this and yes, the guy sucked through the floor was lame. the scene at the end w/ the dad and the son made me cry
I thought the dolls were creepy and awesome but there was something about the episode I didn't really like, I don't know what it was. But it was nice to have an episode without River, even though I really love her character it was nice to have an episode without her. I really didn't like the part where Rory was going on about lights or something, it just wasn't fast enough and didn't sound very natural. It could've worked but it just didn't.
So right! next week's looks so amazing!!!!! China dolls freak the crap out of me just 'cause they're so... Starey and you know... Freaky. I also got annoyed by the anti climax :( I almost feel like doctor who is losing it's touch which is something I don't want to feel.
I agree I think it could have been better as a two part episode. Near the end of the episode however, I got really scared that it would be a two part episode because I wasn't sure I would be able to sleep after watching it!
I also really liked the Doctor's line about Jammy Dodgers. :)
I thought the trailer for this episode was much scarier. The actual episode was kind of 'meh'. I definitely preferred 'Let's Kill Hitler'. I watched that one at least four times, but I don't really have the same urge to watch this one again anytime soon.
lovely video Kayley, i thought this episode was okay, i had bits i liked and bits i didn't like so much, i agree about the date of his death at the end, that wasn't needed at all, any chance that you and Rosianna may do a joint reactions video once you are settled in at your new place in rainy rainy london?
I'm not sure, but I looked at the Doctor Who group on Facebook and everyone was all 'Oh, this episode was so scary!' and I didn't get that at all. Not even suspenseful for me. Otherwise, I did enjoy the episode but it is getting annoying every episode ends with the Doctor looking at the Tardis screen expecting doom or previously Amy's pregancy. I just think they could remove that and everything would be the same.
Was a good episode, I do think they need to push the fear factor a little bit more, and when they do have a scary scene maybe drop the light hearted kinna soundtrack that plays at these points. And I agree with the 'signs' Series 1 'BAD WOLF OMG I JUST NOTICED THAT! WOW!' Now 'oh...yeah..more plot twists, we know..'
I found this episode to be sort of boring. It was kind of vague and there wasn't a lot of good character interaction. I liked that it was one of the first episodes in a long time that could stand on it's own. It felt like a fresh start. But mostly I was bored and it wasn't really inspiring any fear or interest in me.
I didn't find it scary at all, i liked it more than last episode, but i was really looking forward to the scary part because i don't think that most doctor who has been proper scary at all recently, but no such luck,
i much preferred 'lets kill hitler' to this episode. it just wasn't scary enough for me as it had been built up to be a really scary one and just... well wasn't.
Yay you're going to be in the UK :D I like your opinions on this, too :3 I agree with a lot of it. Are you going to be travelling around to other parts of England?
I thought George looked kind of pleased at the prospect of being taken away when the Doctor first introduced himself, which made it difficult for me to immediately accept the idea that the threat of being taken away is what had catalysed his fears. - it wasn't scary at all

doctor who is going at too fast a pace these days, there isnt enough time to develop the story properly...

KillJoy521 5 months ago
I agree with the quickness point, disagree with the Rory joke, but also agree that they should stop dying. And that melting through the floor was incredibly lame. I thought it was such a step up from last week, but probably because River Song wasn't in it being annoying... (AND... I got 20 votes today because I voted everyday and earned more votes... SO YOU GOT 20 VOTES! :D )

I read that next week they have to do all this stuff because the Doctor is dying of a plague. Yeah. That's going to happen.

I liked the bit when the Doctor was spouting off children's stories! Especially The Emperor Dalek's New Clothes :D

NO RIVER SONG BITCH. BEST EPISODE. I miss filler episodes like this. No greater plot line just like, perfect fun.

I have a question for all of you Doctor Who fans. Who do you guys think is Doctor Who Greatest Enemy? (Sorry if I spell it wrong)

@JediQKM3 himself

@JediQKM3 it used to be the Master ... but I guess it's the Daleks now. The daleks have been pleasently absent this season. I like that.

Doesn't the self-awareness about death perhaps indicate that it is going somewhere? That it actually has a significance in the long arc of the plot?

My favourite part:
Mom: "What do we do with things we don't like?"
Son: "We put them in the cupboard."

i have a feeling you liked this episode better than last weeks simply because river wasn't in it, hah

I thought the trailer for this episode was much scarier. The actual episode was kind of 'meh'. I definitely preferred 'Let's Kill Hitler'. I watched that one at least four times, but I don't really have the same urge to watch this one again anytime soon.
Good luck in the UK!

lovely video Kayley, i thought this episode was okay, i had bits i liked and bits i didn't like so much, i agree about the date of his death at the end, that wasn't needed at all, any chance that you and Rosianna may do a joint reactions video once you are settled in at your new place in rainy rainy london?

Just to say you look beautiful in this video <3
Not that you don't look beautiful in all your other videos =P I think it's the light.
But yes, agree with you 100%.

Long review sorry.

I hate those dolls!
The episode really scared me...

i much preferred 'lets kill hitler' to this episode. it just wasn't scary enough for me as it had been built up to be a really scary one and just... well wasn't.

Yay you're going to be in the UK :D I like your opinions on this, too :3 I agree with a lot of it. Are you going to be travelling around to other parts of England?

I like the fact Doctor Who went back to it's old roots with singular tales. It was well executed up until the end however, I agree with you Kayley :)
