its not challenging concerning technique...its challenging playing this musically.. look at this watch?v=VFBB2gu9nlY&feature=related she misses some tones, but thats not really bad because she plays it with her heart,
I took this solo to State and earned a superior- if you'd like, there's a video of my performance on my channel .. Note wise- you missed a few here and there, but like most people have said you need to add some emotion, especially in the cantable section, don't be afraid to connect the notes a bit more, play with the dynamics and also you're allowed to 'stretch' time in there. Technique wise, you're stiff. Try lowering your elbows, 4-mallet should mainly be wrist movement.
Her mallets are fine. What you are hearing are the acoustics of room. The sound is dying. And this piece is not too hard for her. Its perfect. She's not struggling with notes or rhythm so i see no problem in playing it.
Suggestions:
-like everyone else said, loosen up, get into the piece, get emotional, it will show in your playing and dynamics.
-Experiment with tempo (not to much) and dynamics. Stretching in and out in certain places (like the roll section) Think of an accordion.
one thing that would make this song sound even greater! is if you used softer mallets..it'll make a big difference when rolls at 0:03 and 0:13 ....it'l just give it a better faded sound! :)
I've played this song before and I love the sixteenth note part in the middle. I've also played Frogs by Keiko Abe and I would recommend it to any aspiring marimba player.
i orderd the music for this last night :] cant wait to have a start at it .. but i havnt done much four mallet stuff yet.. so i might be pushing myself.. ( as per ) .. im playing grade 8 two mallet stuff at the moment .. i want to learn something else :)
ur lifting on all ur strokes, and that can both hinder ability to play musically and accurately.
piston stroke: u basically keep all mallets prone to a level a few inches or so off the bars when not playing, so all u need to do is drop the mallet, or push it depending on dynamic, onto the bar.. and let the mallet rebound back to the prone position after hitting the note. it basically reduces movement before striking a note.
I disagree also. this song requires a lot of just plain volume through the block strokes. I do think that the dynamics have to be more exaggerated, though.
use more lagato mallets and work out dynamics and musicianship and interpretation. Only time can cause you to be able to feel the music. Like on much of the piece the right stands as the rhythm and melody, and the left is just there for background music. Play it like that!!! Bring down your lefts, actually, bring everything down. DYNAMICS!!!! O, and practice overall. notes aren't everything. though that is a start. Work it out, peace out, props to you.
You really have to lower your wrists or raise your marimba. The Mallets should Parallel with the bars. I notice your #1 Mallet is being playing by flexing your wrist up and down rather than just rotating around the 2 mallet.
And just work on making your rolls a bit smoother otherwise a good performance :D
Thanks to all who commented so far to this video! I appreciate all your suggestions and I´m glad that you all take the time to share your knowledge with me and help me improving my playing.
Well first of all i feel your mallets are too hard. Also watch the accents you didnt play them at all. And in the tremolo section try to start from nothing and build up the dinamic. I know it says mf throught all of the roll ut if you play like that then it gets a little boring. Especially since the phrases repeat. And like everybody before me said lower your wrists. Good luck :)
OK. Watch your wrist and arms you're playing really high from the board. Make sure that you are going for sound quality - Don't smack the bars when a single mallet carries the melody. there isn't really much musicality - it's stagnant after the theme. Your mallets seem to be a little too hard for this piece. You look really tense when you play. Relax and everything should fall into place. It's decent playing and with practice it will be great. Props to you for playing and posting on youtube!!!!!
You were really not into the music.. That bothered me a bit, 'cause I missed so much in your performance. Lower your sticks and get your whole body into the performance, and after some more practice, I think this'll sound good :)

I play this piece too and my remarks:
You play faaaaaar too stiff!! This piece has an enormous amount of feelings! I can't hear any of them!
I don't hear accents, rolls have to be legato, dynamics? and you also have to work on your technique
I love this piece but not like this!

i completely disagree with the idea that lifting hinders your ability to play musically

It´s a nice piece and not easy to play, i would recommend you to play some more easy pieces!
you should make "music", not only play the notes!
use different strength!
use your whole body to get more expression (i hope this is an english sentence :D)
