A guard in CA has the right to use deadly force to protect life or great bodily harm of himself or another.

Don't be fooled, most states have the same policy on guards actions, they only want them to OBSERVE AND REPORT! So while they are doing so people get their teeth kicked in and once the police arrive the victim goes to the hospital for surgery or worse the morgue. The guards and cops right their statements and go home. Like I said this is the "norm" people wake up-then change it!
