I am also told that on New Years it is customary to visit graves of passed ancestors. If South Koreans have family buried across the Han River in North korea, they line the Freedom HIghway along the barbed wire and sing this Lament that is about 600 years old. I cry whenever I hear this melody.

As I recall it is a song about a mountain range. The woman sings as she watches the men disappear out of sight never knowing if they will ever see them again. I think also there is a part about he may get problems with his feet before he returns, but I am not sure. Koreans were enslaved by the Japanese and taken to work or fight wars. When the USA bombed Japan. Mayn innocent Koreans were killed. Arirang's words and melody can change by region--this the Arirang of Seoul. Thanks for Sharing

My father remembered it from 60 years ago as a luliby, but I learned that it is actually a lament with a sence of hope for the future. I also was very moved by the haunting melody. I hear the comon thread of American Indian Music and Korean. You should be very proud.

Thanks for sharing. I just came back from South Korea because I accompanied my parents there. My father is a Korean War Vet who was honored by the country with the Ambassador of Peace Metal. We got to Meet Le Myoun-bak the Pres. They treated us like royalty. I was amazed by the way in 60 years after complete distruction this country was rebuilt and a leader in manufacturing. The song Arirang and the story behind it I found most poinient of the trip.
