Did the KLM pilot actually say all that or are they assuming based on his past actions? And how on earth do they know what the passengers were talking in the KLM flight? i thought all of them died. Why all this drama to depict a tragedy? I would say it is not the best of mayday episodes.
There's no proof he acted like that. There are no transcriptions before landing in Tenerife. That part of the flight is conceived by the authors' imagination. Only asking the Las Palmas ATC to be put in a hold position was further mentioned by the crew while in Tenerife ground.
The authors of the documentary cannot have access to the recordings. They cannot be released according to ICAO regulations. They do have access to the transcriptions.
@Solidboat123 ATR recordings are factual, but if you think the novelesque and romanticized conversations between flight attendants and passengers, the passengers background stories, and the overall storytelling (that was never recorded) is FACTUAL, then you fail. Mayday has way better episodes in the strict documentary department. This is a short biased "historical novel", if you will. I highly doubt the "good ones" were that good, and the "bad ones" that bad.
@captnimmort Of course I don't think the conversations between flight attendants and passengers are factual, they're not recorded by the CVR. You were talking specifically about the Captain, who spends most of his time in the cockpit.
Anyway, I looked up the CVR transcript afterwards (couldn't find an audio clip), and it would appear that the Mayday producers have added some parts at the end, so perhaps you're right
@captnimmort I'm pretty sure the makers of this documentary had access to the cockpit voice recorder, so what is said in the cockpit in this video is exactly what was said at the time
@captnimmort Why do you think he wasn't an asshole? Plenty of pilots are assholes. Most aren't of course, but there is still a significant minority that are just like in every profession.
@icemachine79 You're missing my point. I'm not defending the dude. He may have been a major asshole; but there is no *FACTUAL PROOF* that he was. What you say may fly (pun intended) if this was a movie (fiction or a fictionalized account), but this is (supposed to be) a DOCUMENTARY. The Mayday producers have made very good factual episodes. They tell you what happened, and why, the end. In this one they added a lot of romanticized crap that cannot be verified. Documentary vs fiction.

It's highly unlikely the dutch captain was such an asshole. Even when the crash was ultimately his fault. This documentary is quite biased.
