They are in both places. I just searched Ellis Island scrolled down and there they were. Availability of results of course depends on what you are searching for.
I don't see any of these "updates" you refer to. I believe they are in a new left navigation bar on the left of the search links returned. They are listed under "More search tools" collapsible section, then "Standard view". You might have to post an updated video already.
Once upon a time, I wrote a book for teachers called Links to the Past and wanted to expand it to a book about Ellis Island for teachers. That didn't happen but I have written a book about Google for Teachers.
