Lead poisoning can cause severe brain damage, neurosis, and of course, paranoia. This may help explain some of the insanity of the Roman emperors.

@cboneofenglewood In Caligula's case, there was one STD in particular (I can't remember it off the top of my head) that could explain his unrestrained behaviour but was ruled out because it was a high probability of death which would be even higher in ancient times. The best theory is the sweetener defrutum which was mixed in lead bowls and added to food and wine and since Caligula was a heavy drinker, would have suffered major effects of lead poisoning.
