Excellent Video! As a young child I visited the Fair repeatedly, brings back alot of great memories, as does the music and the ads, lol! Thanks so much for your fine work! :-)
Adding this to my classroom blog to teach my third graders about their neighborhood in Corona,F lushing Meadow Park. I also love the music and added history of photos etc. I was a kid during those years but unfortunately never went to the Worlds Fair.
I have a new two-part worlds fair video on my page. Yes, even though I was not yet three years old, I remember the fair. I took a camera around the Flushing Meadow just recently and made the two-part video on my own with an old worlds fair guidebook.
Some of the comments are pleasing to see in that they show that the 64/5 is a far more significant part of cultural mythology than I had previously assumed. If you grew up in Canada, expo 67 has much the same weight: a turning point in the national consciousness of a then (and now) small country. I'm putting myself up for criticism here but the decline of American supercorporations mentioned below doesn't have that much to do with illegal aliens. Economic forces are a little more complex.
What a great display of nostalgic memorabilia! Set to the most perfect music! I was there in the fall of 1964, pregnant with my first baby. Took me back in the best way. Many thanks!!
America America where have you gone - From a World producer - Great American companies that had the right stuff got us to the moon with out metric system - Where Art Thou - It make me said to see all the proud corp displays back then.. Now it's made in China
Bits and pieces is all that's left
Just look how many people drive American Brand Cars Less & Less They when you see that dollar srink - You know why. God Help us. We are in a decline so enjoy you Jap car
Very appropraite music (LOUNGE) and The Dave Clark Five.
I live near The Old World's Fair Site, and I can feel the memories. How life was different then than now. Pre-Vietnam. We were in Djakarta, Indonesia because my father worked for the US Embassy. I had heard The Beatles "I wanna Hold Your Hand "--which was posted on another World's Fair site. Anyway, nice memorable video.
Neat picture managerie there. I was born in 1966, but my grandmother and her friend went to the 1964/65 World's Fair. I've always been a sucker for things about the World's Fairs. So much was promised for us back then yet in today's world, it seems like a lot of that has been yanked away from us. No wonder us "Generation Jones" types are upset and the X'er's cynical. Although we have computers and the internet, we are losing the middle class.
YAY!! Thank you for posting this! My parents worked & met at the Fair...my father's family were all from Washington Heights, Brooklyn & Bronx (w-a-y back before) so I love to explore the old NY. I only wish I could've seen the fair first hand...and yes, the music is very fitting!
Thank you! I have always wondered what this fantabulous fair must have been like to attend and you truly encapsulated my expectations. I LOVED the pics and music. If only I could time warp back to this very special place and time...
Just great! I went 4 times. My favorite was (I think it was Clarol) where we were able to go into a revolving building. There were individual doors to enter. Each little makeup room was equipped with Clarol products and a big make-up mirror.does anyone else remember this?
I also loved "It's a Small World" and the scale model of the NY area.
It always makes me nauseous when I see how much of that gorgeous architecture was destroyed after the world's fair-- so many innovative and beautiful designs, either completely destroyed or left to rot, like the NYS Pavillion. :-(
I know it! I used to run around and play in there with what was left over decades later where these great exhibits once stood. I always thought it was almost as fun as what it would have been like in '64.
Virginia - You are so right and perfectly stated what is missing today. Today it quick profits send everything to China... Look around next time you drive - look at that parking lots -Almost everybody is driving a Jap Car - While we still make a good car - Traders................
And the middle class, the heart and soul of America, is being destroyed by the invasion of illegal alien slave labor that undercuts living wages and creates a new 3d world class that speaks another language. Press 1 for English.
Yes Virginia - We are being sold out - Our Dollar is sinking - Politicians favor segmented groups -- The "D" party can't wait to register all the invader under their umbrella -- while discounting us and saying in the same breath They Care!
I couldn't agree more w/ you and Virginia. I just came back to live in "The Good Ol' USA" after 25 years in japan and the first thing I said when I got off the plane is "Dude, where is my country." Some asked me "what made you want to come back here" as if to say it's not worth coming back to. The issue is w/all this illegal immigration and the #$%&?! politicians who are destorying this country. Enough said. Everyone knows that. But hey, these are GREAT videos. Let's leave the politics out.

I was there and it was mind boggling at the time.

It was intended that there would be a world's fair in New York every twenty-five years, right? 1989-'90 and, ...oh look, one coming up in 2014-'15!

Remember the horn on the Greyhound trolleys that played their theme song? "Take the bus and leave the driving to us?"

So very well done. I find it so much nicer to immerse myself in the culture of that era than the current Babylonian decay.
