I get tired of these so-called "overseas patriotic ruskies" who sit there on their fat behinds speaking up for the country that they probably left when they were about 3 and claiming to be totally russian, you are american now, face the fat facts....
they both ended the cold war and made the world a better place in a way your rite but id rather have to fight terrorism over a nucleur war between 2 super powers!
he was a good man and he did the right thing by making the Soviet union "open" but he could have kept a democratic socialist goverment in power couldn't he??? He didn't need to destory communisem he could have just made it better
The thing is, he is more of a social democrat rather than a communist. He wanted to "change" the state's ideology, by an abuse of terminology. Mikhail Suslov would probably rise up from his grave and strangle Gorbachev if he could.
If only he was still at the helm...Russia would not be under control of former KGB thugs or the mafia. He knew the system didn't work before, so he changed it, regardless of what the politburo demanded. He was/is the epitome of a statesman, something Putin could never be.
He's only done good really for the west. He gave Russia 10 years of instability which they're now slowly rising out of. And he's responsible for the hell that the people of Central Asia are living in now.
Truly truly truly an intelligent and brilliant man. I am very for sad that things went they went, and not the way he planned for. For his ways would have worked so much much better.

He ruined our nation with the British money and American help. but nothing much has changed my dear friends. because Russia today is much more stronger than it was 10 years ago. now we have the greatest king called Putin and we are coming to fuck you one by one.
Alyaws remember this Russia is one of the most powerful nations in the world.
I've lived in a socialist state all my life. I know it doesn't work. And if you're trying to make some kind of connection between Ayn Rand and Pinochet you'de better re-think that argument. Ayn Rand was, besides an anti-socialist, also a pacifist. Pinochet wasn't. In a socialist state, your will is always going to have to be sacrificed for what the state considers to be best for the majority. However, their actions are very often not directed at the majority and very often not well intentioned.
Which country it is doesn't really matter. I can tell you that it is country which has had continuous socialist governing for more or less the last 90 years, with the exception of the '06 election. We are still living of the reputation we earned after WW2 and and in the 50's when we, basically, got wealthy because all other countries had been bombed to pieces by nazi Germany.
Gorbachev was a great statesman and even though russia has not turned out the way he had hoped democracy has flourished in eastern europe and the former communist countries. It is now up to those countries to independly decide what direction their counrty will take.

Maybe Yeltsin is not the greatest leader of all time and he had a lot of compromises with powerfull peolpe to maintain his position, but he was sincere. All the dictatorships begin with a lie to the people and "little" repressions, that are now done by Putin
A great statesman. He was the first Soviet leader that had a better idea (breaking from formal Soviet doctrine). He was an innovator. I like him and I would love to shake his hand. YES, the USSR was not ready for the change but it needed to happen.
He was responsible for the collapse of the most POWERFUL country. Responsible for thousands and thousands of refugees and land separation. Responsible for WAR and money loss.
Its unfortunate though that he rushed the democratization process. Russia wasn't ready for the level of freedom he gave them. Not that I don't believe it was right, I just think he should have don it a little more...cautiously.
