I've lived in a socialist state all my life. I know it doesn't work. And if you're trying to make some kind of connection between Ayn Rand and Pinochet you'de better re-think that argument. Ayn Rand was, besides an anti-socialist, also a pacifist. Pinochet wasn't. In a socialist state, your will is always going to have to be sacrificed for what the state considers to be best for the majority. However, their actions are very often not directed at the majority and very often not well intentioned.

Which country it is doesn't really matter. I can tell you that it is country which has had continuous socialist governing for more or less the last 90 years, with the exception of the '06 election. We are still living of the reputation we earned after WW2 and and in the 50's when we, basically, got wealthy because all other countries had been bombed to pieces by nazi Germany.

Gorbachev was a great statesman and even though russia has not turned out the way he had hoped democracy has flourished in eastern europe and the former communist countries. It is now up to those countries to independly decide what direction their counrty will take.

A great statesman. He was the first Soviet leader that had a better idea (breaking from formal Soviet doctrine). He was an innovator. I like him and I would love to shake his hand. YES, the USSR was not ready for the change but it needed to happen.
