1) John Legend's version was a hit.... 2) Gabor Szabo's version is also a sample from the original from The Classics IV and 3) When a talented songwriter/producer does cover a track like this, it at least brings the not-so-informed fans back to the origins of the sample. Kudos to J. Legend and Kanye for introducing BOTH versions of Stormy to a new audience!
"Save Room" is the first single from John Legend's second album, Once Again. It is a joyful, cool love song that samples Gábor Szabó's version of the Classics IV hit "Stormy". As John recalls, "Kanye West brought the sample. I didn't even know the original. I just knew it was a nice organ sound and wanted to write to it. I just started mumbling along to it, finding my place in the melody and it worked for me." Source: wikipedia.
Who stole what?!The author's duly credited, the case's closed.
I saw Gabor a year before his death. It was a small jazz club in Vancouver called Oil Can Harry's. His musical instincts, technique, etc. are the best.. He's up there with Lenny Breau.
Thanks Xekbixsi very much for this post. First heard Szabo's work about 20 years ago and spent the 90's trying to track it down on vinyl. Much appreciated.
Some people are overreacting here, let's not forget that this song is also a cover itself. I love Gabor Szabo, and don't listen to John Legends music at all, and i say that.
John may have sampled Gabor but everyone needs to get off his back because Gabor song sounds like stormy and spooky by the classics so not sure if gabor copied the classics or vice versa,
killer smooth intoxicating intro....and just lovely all the way thru

Damn I had no idea Legend's track was sampled from Szabo, sounds bomb

People usually sample grooves and harmonies, but Legend seems to have sampled the harmony AND melody.

Sample history:
Reuben Wilson - Stormy (1969)
Gabor Szabo - Stormy (1969) His own remake
Madlib - Stormy (2003) Remake of original
John Legend - Save Room (2007) Remake of Gabor's version
Great sample. All great joints.
Esp Madlib's ;)

@rtoriq don't forget Santana covered (not sampled) this song as well. This was around '80?
nakohead415 2 years ago
oh yeah i think someone else mentioned, along with Classics IV (sp?), both fantastic versions i never heard of. How about that cover history? :)
You know it's a nice song if people love to do it and each version sounds good

Carlos claims Szabo to be one of his three major influences re: style, so, it just might be the other way around...

Madlib's version of this beat is one of my favorite songs.
GhostBarbieDog 3 years ago
Madlib's version is a remix of Reuben Wilson's cover of Stormy.
souljahswoop 2 years ago
Yeah, but it's still Stormy.
Can't find the Reuben Wilson cover on here, though.
And did someone seriously give me a thumbs down for that? What the hell xd
GhostBarbieDog 2 years ago
this was a great version but i enjoy classics IV .. but this szabo guy gets ad props...
jessedadaboy 3 years ago
I prefer the Santana cover version with Greg Walker doing the vocals of this great (original) song by the Classics IV.
nakohead415 3 years ago
Wow john legend completely stole this beat
mosinnagant94 3 years ago
Actually the producers copied the beat, not Legend.

John Legend just wrote words to the song-- info from wikipedia. He just wanted to be know as a song writer for thixs song but not a pianist.

People relax. The sample was cleared. Whoever needed to be paid was paid. John was upfront from the beginning about the sample.
