You keep missing the point. In your scenario, you the rapper are selling a cd for $10 out of the trunk. In the scenario of a signed rapper you have to pay your manager, the distributor, label and retailer get their cuts too.
What you keep saying is basically you're growing marijuana by yourself in your back yard and then selling it on the block yourself, but Hell Rell, Jada, Chamillionaire aren't doing that. They have about 3-4 partners in the deal and have to split it up.

Rappers aren't paid a salary like a job. So no record sales = no money. It costs over $1 to make each cd. So that leaves $9 profit, plus you have to cover the budget to make the cd, so that leaves less profit. It takes over 100,000+ cd's before there's real profit. Now you think the distributor (major/indie label), plus the label you're signed with splits 50 cents?
