Major props to everyone who beat this game. I just cant beat that damn Dracula. I can only hope to best him one of these days. This game and Ninja Gaiden are so stressful, I can never play them without the help of my good friend Mary. She keeps me sane.
Just starting the series with this game on the GBA. Can someone tell me the gameplay mechanics I know there's only two buttons but I don't know how to use the knife or whatever in the box nor do I know a thing about the items dropped or storyline. Would someone be kind enough to elaborate or is there a textbox or something later on?
@GuiltusGrahdus You press up and B to use a sub weapon. The little 2 and 3 icons allow you to throw that many subweapons on the screen at once. Cross moves in a boomerang motion, Axe flies up at an angle, holy water is thrown out and down towards the ground, Dagger is the worst weapon and just goes out in a straight line dealing crap damage and the stopwatch freezes time for a few seconds though it doesn't work on any bosses after level 3.
@GuiltusGrahdus The story is just normal castlevania. Dracula has come back after his 100 year slumber and it's up to Simon as the Belmont in line to trek through his castle and kill him.
I used to play this as a kid and I could never get past Frankenstein and that retarded %&@%!#@ monkey(?). Recently, I attempted to beat it via emulator, save stating at the beginning of every level. Absolutely brutal, I must have used over 50 lives to beat it.
@0532MOET Death is insane back in the 80's I was the only one I knew who could beat him without using holy water. It takes real skill and devotion. It's so much more fun and satisfying to use the axe or the cross or just the whip and really fight him. Axe is my preferred weapon.
Damn, in all the time I played this as a kid I never realised those little Molotov cocktails could be so useful. I usually stuck with the boomerang, and if picked up the firebombs by mistake I'd yell, "fuck!" and slam don the controller.
This is a prime example of amazing game design. The game builds together like a wonderful jigsaw puzzle, and compliments that with brilliant design and gameplay
anyone know where i can find a list of castlevania games in the order they were released? yes i searched for it and it seems you cant find shit on the internet anymore
I remember this game. I always hated it. Those dogs on the first level used to the scare the shit out of me back when I was 6. Oh good times, I would always have someone keep me company when I played this. Oh and that bat boss... don't get me started with that. I died like 10 times to him. -.-
In my personal opinion, I don't like this game. I thought I would love it, and it must have been awesome back then, but it's extremely outdated by today's standards.
I love how lords of shadow reminds me to this game with is linear gameplay whipping things and his cool armor looking guy, what's better they made simple puzzles and other things just to not make the game boring, and what's more his music is epic, like castlevania 4
Well, I don't know why the fuck no one understand that it is the perfect castlevania 3D game and they finally made it, no more Judgment or castlevania64 shit
@IlMoonlightlI As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a 3D Castlevania, anymore than there is a 3D Sonic or Super Mario or f-ing 3D Kirby... they're just using a franchise to sell a completely different game experience. Valve could make a pen-n-paper Half-Life if they wished, but it wouldn't be Half-Life, now would it?
@Metamusik completely different game? This is the concept: You're a warrior with a whip who advance through levels with lots of monsters, some jumping challenges too, then you find (always) bosses (and I mean, there are like 30 in LoS) ok, there are some things more, like the secondary weapons or the "double jump" from SotN. Ok and finally, you make your way to Dracula, the difference here is that(actually it was planned to be a remake with simon) this is the beginning of the ->It continues up
@IlMoonlightlI Right, this is concept of the Half-life p'n'p game: You are a scientist with a crowbar in a secret government facility, after a teleportation experiment goes horribly wrong you must advance through levels with lots of monsters. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY ROLLING A 12-SIDED DIE and the action takes place on PIECES OF PAPER. You seriously think this is the same game as HL? I'm not saying it's not a good game, I couldn't care less... because I play FPS and not p'n'p RPGs.
@Metamusik ok for half-life.. but the example doesn't fit with the idea of castlevania for the nes and lords of shadow, both games have a lot of similar things, not only the story, I'm sorry but I don't get the point with the comparision with half-life games, which have nothing to do with this, cause both games continue to be as they should, hack'n slash,there's no penshere
btw lament of innocence and curse of darkness are considered games IN the series too, LoS it's not sooo difeerent from them
@IlMoonlightlI That's just it. The genre isn't 3D hack'n'slash; it's 2D platformer. That's why people care about Castlevania in the first place: Classic 2D platformers; some of the best games in the genre have come from the franchise in question. All your examples are 3D games more similar to, say, Soul Reaver and the like. The gameplay is vastly different. A change in perspective = a fundamental change in game mechanics.
@IlMoonlightlI Contiunuation-> Dracula's story, which is the bomb by the way. So now I'll put an example, look at Ninja gaiden franchise, now look the Castlevania one. Ninja Gaiden 3D games are relatively recent, they're good games where you're a ninja and kill things with crazy combos and different weapons, these games have been considered part of the franchise. Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden for the nes have the same gameplay with little diferences, A game is not only his gameplay, you know
@IlMoonlightlI judgment was a good fighting game, really well balenced, the shitty part was the look of the characters and while castlevania 64 is not good, the sequel is a GREAT game the best castlevania in 3d.
@deraickripper Well, in my opinion, the sequel (legacy of darkness I think) it's not a bad game, but by far I consider it worse than the ps2 games and of course LoS, but anyway I respect that you like it. Otherwise, I must say that judgment it's considered a bad game(not only me) due to many big errors of gameplay(and the characters, too), I mean, even IGA rejected from having created it, saying that they couldn't adapt the controls to the wiimote capacities. Well but the music is still badass
I died so far like 25-30 times and still can't fucking kill frankenstein because igor keeps killing me and those motherfucking dragons keep taking 4 bars of life from me which is complete and utter bullshit.
Ok people I do hate most of the modern video games but come on WHY LORDS OF SHADOWS that game seems really fantastic and has a great story line of course , Im starting to see people are starting to hate some really good modern games for no reason . I like castlevania 1 and there is no way lords of shadows can compete with it but still lords of shadows is a really good game
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as the Castlevania series. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
Anyone born before 1985 would understand how extremely difficult NES games (games in general) were... This and definitely Ninja Gaiden! The world of gaming and the world (i.e. no cell phones and internet) :D have taken a back step in difficulty since then. Big props to the ones that still love gaming just like they did the first time they played the world class track meet bundle :D! \m/
@PrinceMarcusWilliam dude, I was born in 1997...And i even know that modern games and easy as pie. Proabaly partly due to the fact that all that was played in my house up till 2007ish was a sega genesis, snes, atari and the nes (n64 and ps1 if my memory serves me right) theres hardly anything brand new in my house. Most high tech gaming consol we've got is a ps2. and yes, Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden are hard games, it is like trying to make it though hell with getting burnt.
@PrinceMarcusWilliam Being different is a god send, being able to go to your friends, Oh so you just beat Black Ops? Well I just completed Doom. plus according to most of the peole in my school who actually play games bar from me and 4 others, LOVE lords of shadow, ALL THAT GAME IS, a gaint rip off of other games. they basically ripped a entire boss from Shadow Of the Collosus. For shame...
great video! I am actually playing this right now on an original nes real cartridge. Do you know why sometimes even is you have hearts you cant use your special? It happens at some parts of the game. thanks
Being a Final Fantasy fan, I began my website with that series. That being said....Castlevania was the first non-FF series I began covering, and now cover 16 of its titles. It is hands down the best platform/RPG series out there. Difficulty, fantastic music, and great gameplay
@PeterTravisBooth because it's 20 years old :') i agree though, new games don't feel right anymore, all graphicy gimmicks. i live on the ps1/gba now :P
@TommittajaFIN well just put it just like you want, my point is that Nintendo games are FLAT, no Dimention on it, on Super Nintendo has more body on the games, (2D) and Nintendo 64 Games Are 3 Dimentional example like Mario 64, Mario Kart, Ect. but thats a good point you have on the "Bits", just sayin there is no round body or walls XD, thats why i like the Nintendo Company :D
Not to say school sucks or that life ain't worht living. Hell no. I liked some of the things I learned in school, but I got teased so much that I really didn't want to go at all. That's ignoring stress from tests. Just sayin' that sometimes life gets to be too intense and we need a break from it. No matter how much I died in these games, it was my choice to play, I was never forced to. That's what matters. And the fact that you earned something, like gold or levels, made it feel real.
Strange how games like this make me fond of the past but all of hte crappy memories from school don't surface. I guess that's because I'd go home and spend a few hours on the console and the life I hated so much was completely ignored as I was in a different reality altogether - one where I didn't feel like a prisoner.
I remember renting a game for the nintendo. I was a teen. This was just before I moved to another console. I loved this game for the time I played it. It's what made me turn to RPGs when I grew older. Great game. Funny I never pursued it afterwards but I sold the nintendo. I always rmemebered this game but I couldn't remember the name for years. Then few years ago it clicked. Nice video this cements in my mind that castelvania was that game I rented so long ago :)
@SBluvr99 i guess nobody likes belmont Vs Tw anymore... oh well i guess they are tired of seeing coments like this in EVERY FUCKING VIDEO that has to do something with vampires... ***king tw fans and theyr shit.
@roman6a Sorry I'm a bit confused? :( U know I'm not a twilight fan right? I made that comment because the vampires in this game are cool and menacing, but twilight? blech! >_<
this were it start nes this was da first game i got when i was growin up n da 90's this game still go hard this music still sound good old school games rock
I would love to see a new side-scroller Castlevania... with Simon back! Todays graphics and cool little tweaks w/ the old school, straight-forward game style!
One of my favorite games for the NES as a child. I was too poor to buy it brand new so I had to settle for a used version. I got yelled at so many times for skipping lunch and dinner just to play it. It gave me endless fits as I always had to blow into the cartridge to get it to work. But well worth the hassle.
This video makes this game look so easy. I remember playing it back when I was 5, got scared of lots of stuff in the game, and couldn't get past level 3. When I saw this video, I was like, "hey, maybe I can complete the game once and for all, using this video as the guide." So then I gave it a shot and guess what? I died at level 2.
@angelcrisis44 They're both must play classics with amazing soundtracks and revolutionary atmosphere, this game is harder than Zelda. I love Castlevania but since you've already seen half of the game played through in this speedrun video I'd suggest Legend of Zelda for you atm, which should last you longer and has a save function unlike this game. Castlevania III is another NES classic on the VC which is even longer and harder than Castlevania, it has a password save function to, which is nice.
@RattyRandnums i was going to add super castlevaina 4 to this list, but i found out two things;
1. requires classic cotroller which i dont have
2. costs 800 and not 500 and thats another thing to. really? 800? wtf! like they couldn't round it like the game was to epic to be just 500, but to crappy to be 1000
@angelcrisis44 Hm, well Castlevania 4 is a great game but it's a little on the short side, probably a little bit shorter than Castlevania 3, has a save function and is way, way easier than any other ClassicVania game.(As opposed to MetroidVania/SOTN style CVs which are comparatively easy)
And yeah I don't think the standard Wiimote has all of the buttons necessary to play it, the SNES has 8 buttons and SCV4 uses most of them in some way. Since ur using t/Wiimote I'd definitely say go with Zelda
This guy is almost as good as I was at this game....almost....

Being a Final Fantasy fan, I began my website with that series. That being said....Castlevania was the first non-FF series I began covering, and now cover 16 of its titles. It is hands down the best platform/RPG series out there. Difficulty, fantastic music, and great gameplay

Nintendo = 1D
Super Nintendo = 2D
Nintendo 64 = 3D
HackerMTY6 6 months ago
@HackerMTY6
what the.... oh, it's a joke.
right?
since 1d would be nothing. without lenght there's nothing in the screen.
nes = 2d - 8bit
snes 2d - 16bit
n64 3d - 64bit
TommittajaFIN 6 months ago
@TommittajaFIN well just put it just like you want, my point is that Nintendo games are FLAT, no Dimention on it, on Super Nintendo has more body on the games, (2D) and Nintendo 64 Games Are 3 Dimentional example like Mario 64, Mario Kart, Ect. but thats a good point you have on the "Bits", just sayin there is no round body or walls XD, thats why i like the Nintendo Company :D
HackerMTY6 6 months ago
@HackerMTY6
it's still impossible. nothing is 1D.
1d = the screen image has lenght, not width or depth (well depth on a 2d screen is impossible too)
so there would be nothing showing on the screen.
for example the screen size could me 480x0

Not to say school sucks or that life ain't worht living. Hell no. I liked some of the things I learned in school, but I got teased so much that I really didn't want to go at all. That's ignoring stress from tests. Just sayin' that sometimes life gets to be too intense and we need a break from it. No matter how much I died in these games, it was my choice to play, I was never forced to. That's what matters. And the fact that you earned something, like gold or levels, made it feel real.

@gukonni You just broke one of the rules of the Internet.
AvalonCenturi 7 months ago

I died at level 2.

i have 500 wii points left, i need a poll: get this or legend of zelda?
angelcrisis44 9 months ago
@angelcrisis44 They're both must play classics with amazing soundtracks and revolutionary atmosphere, this game is harder than Zelda. I love Castlevania but since you've already seen half of the game played through in this speedrun video I'd suggest Legend of Zelda for you atm, which should last you longer and has a save function unlike this game. Castlevania III is another NES classic on the VC which is even longer and harder than Castlevania, it has a password save function to, which is nice.

@RattyRandnums i was going to add super castlevaina 4 to this list, but i found out two things;
1. requires classic cotroller which i dont have
2. costs 800 and not 500 and thats another thing to. really? 800? wtf! like they couldn't round it like the game was to epic to be just 500, but to crappy to be 1000
angelcrisis44 9 months ago
@angelcrisis44 Hm, well Castlevania 4 is a great game but it's a little on the short side, probably a little bit shorter than Castlevania 3, has a save function and is way, way easier than any other ClassicVania game.(As opposed to MetroidVania/SOTN style CVs which are comparatively easy)
And yeah I don't think the standard Wiimote has all of the buttons necessary to play it, the SNES has 8 buttons and SCV4 uses most of them in some way. Since ur using t/Wiimote I'd definitely say go with Zelda
