I realize high speed video cameras are really expensive, but with them out there it seems like this is very pointless.. Both the photos he took looked like crap.
That was because they hadn't dimmed the lights totally. For this to work correctly, you'd have to be taking the photos in pitch darkness if possible. As soon as you press the button on the camera, it's taking in light, the flash just blasts it with bright light on the moment you want to capture. Unless the room is dark, it'll pick up a bit of everything, which is what happened here.
It went off when she said "cheese" heehee. But he didn't say anything about the picture not showing the ballong actually popping and the mic hearing her say cheese first then the mic hearing the pop.
