how to make butter milk is so easy just add about abit more than half cup water to 1 cup yogart with littel salt and shaked well this is the way you will get butter milk enjoy
thanks for this. I wonder why it's impossible to buy good Irish soda bread in NYC? There was a great place in WOODSIDE [Shane's] but shut down. Someone has since hijacked the name SHANE for their brown bread but it's absolute crap.
Do you have a good substitution for buttermilk? I've tried lemon juice or vinegar in the milk, but it never seems to taste the same. I live about 20 miles from the nearest grocery store, and my hankering for soda bread isn't worth the drive.
Saco Foods makes a powdered buttermilk for cooking and baking and I buy mine at the grocery store. It works great and it stores in the fridge for a year. Otherwise just use a milk that has fat (not skim or 1%)
You were doing great until you added the brown sugar and flax seeds. Best video I've seen yet, but not the Traditional recipe of flour, salt, baking soda, and buttermilk.
Excellent techinique on baking Irish Soda Bread. Try it with the traditional ingredients only and see how it turns out.
I've made the traditional recipe so many times, and actually I prefer that method of few ingredients as possible.
Lately I've been on a "kick" using the flax seed in all kinds of recipes. Just wanted to try the brown sugar to see what the flavor result would be.
Thanks for watching, and Thank You for the compliment! I learned the recipe for Irish soda bread from my mother, but I prefer the brown bread, and using whole wheat flour over white flour.
One of the things I loved most in Ireland was the brown bread...it was served everywhere. I don't know what they used, what type of flour, but it was grainy...rough textured. Good with orange marmalade and a cup of tea.
Oh YUM!!! I'm definitely going to try your recipe; I love to cook in all it's realms, but baking is my favorite. 5 stars and fav'd!! Hey, cut me off a slice :)
Hee Hee, I'm readay! My prickly pears are working on getting ripe; maybe I should show how that's done in my next cooking vid, to make prickly pear juice for jellies and for maragaritas!!! But the, you probably don't have cactus hanging 'round your place ;-P It would be good with your soda bread as a jelly - rich, red and delish :)
Believe it or not, Prickly pear cactus (Opuntia humifusa) is native in New York ! I see plenty at the beach in New Jersey, and our local Botanic garden has a beautiful patch of them. However, I don't recall seeing any of the fruit getting bigger than a golf ball. In season I have bought good sized pears at a Mexican grocery store.
I hope you do the video, they must make the best looking margaritas ever !
The margaritas are to die for and the jelly is awesome; maybe I will, but I need to wait until they turn the right color of red - maybe take a pic of the fruit at harvest the process of making margaritas with them :)
awesome video, i have thought about making some of my own cooking videos also, something like for bachelors, something quick and easy to make stuff, i've been dreaming about doing this, one day, cool vid :)
where to begin. 1) Kudos for making a cooking video 2) Nice patina on the cast iron, how many years have you had that? 3) Is that a VIKING? 4) Looks delicious, I'll provide you my mailing address if you feel like sharing! 5) What is the appropriate tea pairing with Brown Bread?
I have the pan about 10 years, it is WAY older than that, I got it for a good price at a flea market. I season the pan all the time with oil or beef fat. Not a Viking, its DCS. The bread is almost gone, might not be any left to mail !;-)
awesome! what a cool vid. i've always wondered how hard it was to make bread... now i have an easy recipe. i will give this a try, thanks for sharing this with us... peace2U

can you use regular milk or skin milk
herbal036 2 years ago
You would have to prepare the milk as a buttermilk substitute.
The online recipe: add 1 tablespoon or lemon juice or vinegar to enough milk to make one cup.

are you irish??? very good vid, very simple...

To the right of the video, click on the blue words (more info), the ingredients are listed there. Unlike traditional brown bread, i added flax seed.

Can I use just brown flour instead of mix it wil the white?
mlsdd 3 years ago
I think it would work, but the bread would not rise as much.
I made a yeast bread with whole wheat flour Only. I liked the taste, but the loaf was dense, small, and fell apart easier than a mixed flour loaf.

Looks wonderful. I'm going to go make this right now.

Nice. I especially liked the upside down muffin pan as a cooling rack, very innovative!

Nice! I can smell the peat stove cooking it and the taste of Guiness (for strength, of course) to wash it down.

It tastes good. It gets stale quick, so I slice it then freeze it. Toasting it really adds to the flavor.

It is a pastry blender, generally used for cutting butter/ lard/ shortening into flour. Not necessary for this recipe.
