We didn't lose it, South Vietnam did that for us because their government was rediculously corrupt and their military incompetent. The US lacked the political backbone to take the war to North Vietnam, and so we just abandoned the South when it became obvious that the Southern Government was never going to be effective. The military didn't lose the war, the politicians lost the peace.

@RogerwilcoFoxtrot The conscripts in the Vietnam war was fragging their own officers, burning villages, high drug use etc etc. Fact was the US forces wasnt geared up to fight unconventional warfare at that time. I think invading North Vietnam as your post suggests would have been a disaster. Unconventional warfare is pretty hard to combat as were seeing in Afganistan.
