  • i didn't notice until he said something! the drumming does look out of place now. damnit. i wish he didn't say anything.

  • @NUKLEUSBENZ maybe your internet is not working properly, let it load. Can't really seem to notice any out of sync here, but then again Im not in the editing business. What timeframe are we talking about?

  • What an inspiring place to jam!

  • Love that melody that kicks in at 5:32

  • Love the band, but they kinda blew with this one - just think how popular the song could get if it was titled "Helvetica".

  • I don't even like this type of music and this is badass.

  • These guys are all really talented musicians,This track is groovy as hell

  • Seen this guy open for Tool.. and now he's one of my biggest influences. I just hope he knows that

  • whatever hi hats john stanier uses must the greatest ones in the world

  • is it just me or does anyone else get the urge to thrust their hips forwards and backwards to the intro of this song?

  • there's a much shorter version of futura performed live on jimmy fallon which I prefer to this version..I also prefer the album version than this version but I still think this version kicks ass

  • wow when it goes into that riff at about 5.30.... amazinggggggg the echo of the room, ahhhh so good

  • @MichaelCoull Michael Coull, yer a pure nob, eh?

    Tune though.

  • Mathematical Musical Majicians

  • its better than the cd version o.o

  • @dassaultrafale22

So I'm not the only one. Not to sound like an arse but I was kinda disappointed. But I think Battles tweak there songs for live performances in some way 'cause I remember Hi-lo (I think) sounding a billion times better than on the CD.

  • It's like listening to sounds from the lost world of Awesome

  • This "Take away show" are available for downloading or some? the sound quality is amazing

  • @ShadowResonance You have lots of tools to download Youtube movies... Try searching for "youtube downloader" @ google.com... Great sound btw! :)

  • @ShadowResonance yeaaah agree!

  • Damn, today has been a great day!!

  • good good good!!!!!!!!

  • AMAZING!! huge like :D

  • HOW THE FUCK COULD YOU DISLIKE THIS

  • @shellyboy9 You're a verbose twat.

  • @frankenmule This is too tempting. 1) So, which part of the mule are you franken. 2) lostfanvanjellies called me a dick. Perhaps you two should get together. The laws in NY are still favorable. Why is it when I disagree with some of you (the morons in particular), I'm an expletive. Guy, just dig a hole, put your head in and pretend it's your future.

  • The people that disliked this video should be rounded up and shot for having horrible taste.

  • @frankenmule only 4 people, i can let that slide

  • @shellyboy9 But like you said, if they haven't put in that strict 10,000 hours then they can't possibly be good musicians.

  • @Immoregangsterthan I never said, nor did I mean to imply that these guys were in it for girls graft and glory. Nevertheless, for the overwhelming majority of rock/pop bands, these are the reasons. And yes, as williamheltor says, mastering your instrument and being a good musician are synonymous. I never called these guys fakers. Again however, because these guys abilities are far above the average pop musicians doesn't make them good, as being a master doen't make you great.

  • @shellyboy9 I agree that being able to play your instrument well is synonymous to being a good musician, but I disagree that being a master of your instrument and being a good musician are synonymous. I believe a good musician is someone who can communicate their idea to the world on an instrument, and while being a master makes this a much easier process, it is definitely not a process limited to people who are masters of their instruments. A great musician is someone who is flexible.

  • @Fliko Well, again, Justin Beiber's instrument is his voice and seemingly he does an excellent job communicating his ideas to the world. By your definition he is a good musician. So does Katy Perry and so did Tiny Tim. I think you're confusing great communicators/personalities with being a great musician. The ability to connect with people on a mass scale with your instrument be it your voice, your body, or your mind is a separate although rare talent. To this I cannot disagree.

  • @shellyboy9 As much as I hate to admit it, Justin Bieber does communicate with the niche that he fills, and he does have his own place in the world as a musician. Perhaps we will have to agree to disagree on this, but I do still strongly feel that the biggest part of being a great musician is communicating your ideas/emotions, and is even more important then playing your instrument like a machine. Awesome to see some really smart comments on this youtube video though.

  • @Fliko Yeah man, great to see perceptive people making insightful comments about instrumental music. I've always believed great musicians are great communicators as well. Part of that is playing with emotion as well as intellect. It's all part of learning your instrument. A metronome is just a machine, and not a musician. A player piano is a note perfect machine, not a musician. Removing the humanity from music, for me, leaves it a barren excersize.

  • @shellyboy9 Exercise.

  • @shellyboy9 you should be raped by yur granny

  • @antiooorgasm And aren't you just the sweetest thing. OOmpmrn alhjipno grrrlvner!. Wait, your mommy can't respond with my dick in her mouth She wants to know if you're anti her orgasms. If not, then congrats, expect a new baby brother. My son, unlike you will be born with genitalia.

  • @shellyboy9 genious

  • @antiooorgasm Thank you. Now, help me here. 1) In order to skull fuck your daddy, will I have to dig him up or merely cut off his head. 2) Why won't your baby sister swallow. Has your brother been giving her bad instructions?

  • @shellyboy9 keep goin :)

  • @Fliko Did you just imply that Justin Bieber was a better musician than the Battles band members? o_O

  • @lostfanvanjellies22 I never said anything about Bieber being a better musician then the Battles.

  • @Fliko But yes, a great musician is flexible. By that I mean proficient in many genres because he has mastered his instrument, has kept his ears open, and his mind ready.

  • @Fliko @Fliko I'm not a musician on any level & would love to hear your opinion about something.. My mom dated the guitarist of a well known blues/boogie-rock band when i was a kid. He loved telling me how rare "true musical geniuses" are, with Prince & Sting being the two he mentioned the most. He said a "true musical genius" is someone who plays 10 or more major instruments at a Master's level without professional training. Is there any truth to that story or was he just making it up?

  • @byronhilton I wonder what he would define as a 'major' instrument?

  • It is nearly impossible to MASTER any instrument without training. Let alone 10. There is also more to music than being an instrumentalist. It doesn't quite sound like he knows what he is talking about.

  • @KloppingJ

Yeah, that doesn't really surprise me, I have always assumed he was straight up full of shit lol

  • @Immoregangsterthan Your reply seems a bit ambiguous, but you do make a point; each have been in other bands and have played other musics. I just find them, taking in the plethora of fine musicians out there, to be marginal. Think williamheltor's jazz teacher couldn't play this stuff? Think his teacher is Lang Lang or Cecil Taylor? Again, I'm just glad (and I think williamheltor is too) that instrumental music is being played. Remember, because you've just heard it doesn't make it new.

  • @shellyboy9 After reading back over what you have said about putting in 10,000 hours, fakers etc. it seems like you have this horrible "formula" idea behind what it takes to become a good musician. To say bands like this posses little talent, are only in it to get girls and that they are fakers is one of the most warped and out dated opinions I have heard. The members of this band have been in numerous other bands with different styles and different approaches to writing and performing music.

  • Why HD when you can't keep the cam and focus steady?

  • Icy Demons - Trial By Lasers?

  • Does this mean I like jazz now?

  • But straying from the original isn't cheating. It's just HARD. Hard to do so in a creative manner without losing the organic, visceral thread of the music and its concepts, while sustaining the audience. Jazz musicians have been doing it for years. Composers have realized that music and math are kissing cousins for centuries (just listen to Mozart and his pre and post masters).

  • @shellyboy9 You just crazy

  • @tthheepparrttee Agreed.

  • @shellyboy9 You're a dick.

  • @lostfanvanjellies22 Ever done anything for 10,000 hours except swallow some you'rea? Dick?

  • Are they very good musicians? I don't think so. Their talent lies elsewhere: in the extremely rare ability to make masses of people like you. Those people you can count on one hand. But that's another topic. With musicianship and the cult of personality, time does tell.

  • @shellyboy9 - what are you babbling about?

  • @shellyboy9 - I don't even know that i'm sure what "masses" you're talking about. LOL. This isn't a movie and we don't need an opinion from someone who isn't even interested in the first place. Thanks tho!

  • @Stevelogical You're welcome.

  • @shellyboy9 OMG, you aren't THE shellyboy9 are you? I've loved your very good music forever, and you're right, these guys are TOTALLY in it for the chicks and the cash -- chicks go mad for avante-garde math rock, right? Right?

  • @tthheepparrttee Sorry, you're mistaking me for my talented twin. Never said they were in it for chuckles, cash, and chicks. Did say it was good to see some bands attempt to play instrumental music which does require a level of musicianship. Thanx for almost being cynical.

  • @tthheepparrttee this isn't math-rock. math-rock relies on precise delivery.. straying from the original would be cheating so to speak. Their live stuff just goes to prove that they make something in the studio which they cannot reproduce without toiling over it.. these are not final versions of thoughts or emotions.. just structures open to reconstruction with every live visit. Essentially a continual jam, striving for freeform, or rather escaping the strain of structure. I don't like it.

  • @themu5ic I think they choose do it that way though, like as a jam rather than lay out the song as it was done in the studio -- I dunno, I'm just guessing. I've seen performances where they get right into the song as it is on the album, and then others where it takes like 10 minutes to get into an otherwise 5 minute song. I really love them for it, but respect that you don't like them. You're totally entitled to it.

  • May all share your confidence and tollerance.. absolutely no sarcasm in that. Cheers!

  • @themu5ic You do have a point. Freeform implies no standard signature. This was typified by Ornette Coleman. The beauty of it, when done well, is the freedom it gives the performers, and the feeling of expansiveness and excitement for the listeners. The weakness was, many performers after Ornette simply weren't musicians enough to connect intelluctual and musical concepts. But, as Mingus would say, write it down. To perform precise music, read from sheets.

  • @shellyboy9 ive heard of the same study, my jazz teacher has put in his 10,000 hours. but i think that being a master of an instrument and being good musicians are the same thing

  • I remember years of bleeding fingers. I started guitar lessons when I was 13. I played in bands for 25 years. For the first 10 years I practiced 5 hours a day. I still sucked in comparison to real musicianship, but I became proficient. I can still recognize the few from the fakers within seconds. Opinionated? Yes, and harsh when it comes to musicians and vocalists (yes, I took singing lessons too). Whether you love or hate Timberlake or GaGa, (I don't dislike), they put in the time.

  • What can I say? How nicer a way can I say expand your musical horizons? It's good to see some bands attempt to play instrumental music, which does require musicianship. Bands today don't start for the music, but for the girls/guys and the money. It's practice on your instrument, not rehearsal that makes a good musician. One guy took a survey of great musicians and found it took a minimum of 10,000 hours of practice to attain a high level of musicianship. At 5 hours a day do the math.

  • I'd love to reply to this in Futura

  • @shellyboy9 Just out of interest, how much Battles have you heard?

  • @Immoregangsterthan Honestly, I don't think one song encapsules a persons music, although each song is representative. I listened to a few (Ice Cream, The Line, Atlas, Tonto and one other which I've forgotten). For me, other fusionists have done this stuff much better. Again, I don't dislike these guys, they just sound mediocre to me. After some thought though, I'm glad some people are still passionate about music, fans and Battles included. So, try Weather Report and Philip Glass.

  • @shellyboy9 Can i ask you to listen to Mirrored all the way through? I bought that album and hated it for the longest time, but then more and more of it got stuck in my head as i kept listening and now they're my favorite band.

  • @shellyboy9 Although I appreciate your understanding towards other peoples taste I can't help but feel you respond it in a very patronising way.

  • @shellyboy9 Did you just call Phillip Glass a "fusionist".

  • @crazybeff For me, not really, although his Music In 4 Parts has been considered by some to be so (classical, jazz, rock). His The Photographer was a turning point for him stylistically. At times he defies descrpition, although his music has always been sparse (some would say cold).

  • @crazybeff In the contex of guys like Aarvo Part, at least accesible.

  • @shellyboy9 what's particularly inaccessible about him?

  • @locomocioncapilar You mean Aarvo Part? In that case I should have said to me. Aarvo for me is generally more traditionally classical. Again, some say Glass's minimalism cold; I say cold like electric fire. Part's minimalizm seems more lyrical, and in THAT way accessible.

  • where did they recorded this vid?

  • i actually love this!

  • @MrAshbo1 same

  • what is this this is hope

  • John Stanier, can you be my dad?

  • @her0indragon he may be, you never know

  • @her0indragon Haha, curious is all but of all the members why him?

  • @Thejampacker I don't really know.

  • @her0indragon I know this doesn't really matter, but it's been bothering me. Stanier is obviously an awesome drummer, and I'm sure they are all close to equal in terms of contribution... but I've seen STANIER IS GOD literally a thousand times, and never seen credit given to the guys behind the genius guitar- work, sequencer- work, and awesomemathrockness- work.

  • @Ichvyenichalster Weird, where'd you see that? I don't ever believe I've seen a "STANIER IS GOD" post before.

I wasn't putting them down, they're great too, I just don't think I want them to be my dad...

  • @her0indragon I've seen "stanier is god" posts before...I love battles so I' ve watched many live performances on youtube, they're just spread out through them, or that he's the human metronome

  • @her0indragon I just met John at Asbury Park on October 1st, my brother and I talked to him for literally a half hour. He is an awesome chill guy, brilliant musician... told me a new Tomahawk CD is in the works!!!!!

  • you can always count on these sessions to provide good quality recordings of great bands

  • Im not saying this in a negative way but seeing these guys play their instruments makes me feel uncomfortable. Amazing song though. it's a shame there isn't a lot of people who appreciate this.

  • When will people learn to just watch the video and not comment or read the inane meaningless banter from others?

  • @Stevelogical i like dogs

  • dope

  • Does anyone know if the piano player is classically trained? it just looks like hes beating the shite out of the 2 pianos

  • ian williams? classically trained? more than likely.

best album ever to kick off a summer.

  • @auroraindicakush ye,such a good summer album, ian williams is ridiculous.

  • Frankly, I'm glad people are showing some interest agan in any attempt at good musicianship. Honestly, my musics of choice are Jazz and Classical, with some interest in Pop and R & B. I have performed music for many years on stage. Hey cunt, do you have any interests at all besides licking toilets at many of our countries fine reststops, or playing with your toy soldiers, or breaking into your one ex-girlfriends house an masturbating on her diary?

  • I've seen them two days ago and it was certainly of the most satisfying concert of my life.

  • Before this video, I had never heard of Battles. Because of this video, I just bought their new album, and I'm addicted. Thank you, La Blogotheque, for consistently putting out the best music journalism on the web.

  • @IAmTheSwordmaster Same here! I just love these guys. They are playing at the Pitchfork festival this year and I am so psyched!

  • You seem a good and rational guy david82881. As compared to benwifi who is obviously the result of fertilized feces from his daddy's random gay affair. Hey, he attacked first.

  • @shellyboy9

Go die in a fire you self righteous cunt. All those retards you love from the 70s sucked freddie mercurys cawk and died from aids with him. Its a pity you didnt die too

  • @deadcunt or should I say livingcunt. In an attempt to dispel that fetid ooze flowing from your lips, I have not now nor then any interest Queen or any of those bands from the 70's. My interest is in musicianship, across musical genres. Now back to you, someone who seems a prime recommendation for post natal abortions. Ever stand on stage before others (I mean those outside your pillow biting closet) and perform (also, I mean

not before 12 Asian men waiting for your butt plug to eject)?

  • @deadcunt Yo arrogant fatty cuntboy, the coast is clear. You and your homophobic, morbidly obese lifemate can now go to New York and legally do the dirty deed. By the way, when you and your he/she dance, who leads?

  • david82881, you think anyone who plays an instrument plays well? If that's true then anyone banging on a garbage can, or a monkey at a piano is an artist. Think Justin Beiber's songs are well sung? It's always been my opinion that a musicians style is more a depiction of their limitations than anything else. I never mentioned laziness or errors. This is purely about capability. Know anyone who says what I like is good and I'm indifferent to all else? People have opinions about good or bad

  • Wait. I can still see benwifi dragging his butt (and knuckles) across the carpet. Hey buddy, use the resultant in your weave.

  • I just ordered a D5100 about 15 minutes ago despite it receiving lukewarm reviews for video production. You don't know how thrilled I was when I clicked the video credits here and and saw that it was (at least partly) used in this shoot.

  • Better than the album version, this is more raw

  • @johnwashere22 the album is out??!?!?

  • Everyone but me is stupid; Especially you.

    Hell of a show.

  • Ah, benwifi, obscenity; the last refuge of the truly ignorant. You know the definition of fucking idiot? Those who use the phrase. This wasn't the music I listened to in college since I was there is 1980. I saw all those bands when I was young in the 70's. Now where was I. Oh, close minded, minimally informed fluff heads like you. I played guitar (poorly) for twenty years, so I know fakers and philistines like you by your smell.. Wait, I hear your mommy calling. Leave your basement.

  • My favorite song off the album.

  • citizencream, I said I didn't dislike them. This may not be a ringing endorsement, but there it is. Like what you like, but don't be mislead into thinking this stuff is particularly original, nor well played. That my friend is putting your head in the sand. I enjoy a lot of stuff that is highly derivative. I'm just not foolish enough to believe this is the musical future like underself. By the way citizencream, none of the people I mentioned are dead physically or musically.

  • @shellyboy9 That you would compare John Mclaughlin or Philip Glass to this band shows you're a fucking idiot. Stop phrasing opinion as fact, and stop acting like the music you listened to in college is the end all be all of the music world, you hippie fuck.

  • Hey 7endertelecaster, all music is metaphor. Hey blizzaire08, if you want eye opening drumming, listen to Billy Cobham on Mahavishnu's Inner Mounting Flame. That's excitement. Hey underself, this music is the past, and Battles are pedestrians who watched the end of a parade of giants trickle by.

  • @shellyboy9 so what? we're supposed to just listen to dead people's music and not give credit, appreciation or enjoyment in ANY of the new bands who plays music like this? sheesh.

  • Let's be straight about this kind of music and this band in general. I don't dislike either, but truth to tell, this music is fusion (rock/jazz) and it was done far better under the extraordinary musicianship of Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, and John McLaughlin in the 70's and and early 80's. Frankly, Battles music is neither new nor particularly well played. If you want excitement, listen to McLaughlin's Inner Mounting Flame. For musical development, listen to Phillip Glass' Music In Four Parts

  • @shellyboy9 not really sure how you can say something isn't well played if the artist playing it created it in the first place. Ever think that whatever mistakes or laziness you see in the music might just be their style? We aren't doing math equations here, there is no right and wrong. There is music. If you don't like it, great, if you do, great. Maybe I don't like the way you phrase your comment, but who cares what I think, it is yours.

  • @shellyboy9 don't like it, don't listen

  • @danlikesmusicalot At least you're sensible. It seems because I said I didn't adore these guys and thought they're music derivative and poorly played was sufficient grounds for me to be personally attacked. I've seen a LOT of bands in my life (literally hundreds before and more after age twenty). Played a LOT of music with some very special musicians (again hundreds). Hopefully you and everyone else will have the opportunity, like I have, to do the same. Then give me your opinion on music.

  • @shellyboy9 i like to think i respect everyone's opinion, even if i disagree.

Your opinion doesn't in any way change my feelings towards Battles (battles just aren't to your taste as far as i can see)

though if i'm honest if i disliked a song so much i wouldn't bother writing a whole paragraph about why i don't like the artist, it seems really troll like to me, just sayin.

let's just all learn to respect each other's opinion and get on with our lives :)

  • @danlikesmusicalot You're right, and I hope your love of music remains a lifelong passion. Life is long, and taste evolves. Not trying to change any opinion, just expressing mine. Nice to talk to an adult who disagrees.

  • Battles performed this song on Fallon a few days ago, the performance was, I think, a lot better, and I also preferred the way the performance was filmed.

I can't post a link because of Youtube restrictions, but search `Battles` on `The Audio Perv`

  • This album was a surprise for me. I didn't know what to expect with the line-up change and having read reviews first. I feel that they have tapped into a new sound. The more I listen to this album the more it grows when i thought it would stop. I find there is deep emotion in these songs. Is anybody else hearing it too? Have we ever heard sounds and styles combined like this before? This is the fucking Futura and these guys are leading the way.

  • @AstrayVision probably Ableton, 'cause he's using the Akai APC, which is a MIDI-controller/sampler for ableton.

  • I really enjoyed mirrored but this comes off as really uninspired.

  • dang that looks fun. love the texture and overall jammitude.

  • One of THEE dopest drummers drumming today.

  • you don't get in man, battles are just so... you know... you have to know them to... just so... you got think about it as variables man...they're not a band...they'
