oooh! i have a X-type 3L 4-wheel drive, never got the chans to test it on snow and ice yet but if a 2L frontwheel driven version can do that good it looks promesing!
@mard420 with manual gearbox always first gear, 2nd or 3rd will just burn your clutch, engine idling and accurate clutch operating gets you out from insanely slippery places. Ok bigger gear with automatic, but automatic geabox is as much cheating than esp :P
@Karjis it doesn't burn the clutch on snow and ice. and it depends on the vehicle. With a truck or a diesel in Northern Ontario, you can easily start in a higher gear without ridding the clutch. PS. its -20 to -30C here from December to march
this video is not completely correct - take a look at the angle of front wheels after last exercise. In first case (when ESP is off) they turned to the limit and accelerator is not pressed (that's a good reason to start rotating), in second case (with ESP on) he steers more accurate and front wheels turned on very small angle.
@ach2404 I think the reason he does not steer as accurate the first time has to do with the fact that the car had more angle in the skid due to ESP being turned off, which in turn necessitates a larger steering angle. With ESP enabled the angle was much less, so less steering correction was needed. Also, these days a large range of normal consumer cars have ESP as standard equipment in stead of optional, so advertising it is not really necessary anymore. My opinion, others may disagree with it.
I'll tell ya, I had traction control on my old Chevy cavalier and it works. Going up an icy road in my cavalier with traction control on was no problem. Going up an icy hill in my no traction control having toyota which was decades older, not happening. Traction control is great.
@hossamm3 Surprisingly I found that my car was excellent through this cold winter (-20 degrees) and never got stuck once in the snow or skidded out of control. I seen a lot of new car abandoned at the side of the road. I think you've just gotta drive sensibly and look out for slippery patches on the road (riding a motorbike really made me look out for that). Driver aids may be great but doesn't mean you can drive like an idiot though.
ESP cudeńko! Próbowałem swoje auto na oblodzonych parkingach przed marketami "na ostro". A i podczas normalnej jazdy w zimie okazało się baaardzo skutecznym rozwiązaniem!!! Piękna sprawa i nie wyobrażam sobie na dzień dzisiejszy jazdy bez ESP i ABS.
sorry but that part when Tiff trying go up the hill on ice is just stupid. i know that traction control works but 2-3000 rpm its not "gently" on ice...
@ardvark84 keeping the revs of the engine constant and feathering the clutch allows you to change the power to driven wheels more easily, that is the way to get through that kind of thing, especially if you`re towing. cuts the crap out of the clutch though
@spy742 ESP contains different safety features. Main technologies are ABS and TCS. You CANNOT deactivate ESP completely. The "ESP OFF" button only deactivates the TCS. This is required in some situations like driving on a snowy surface.
@Iamhornet The guy on the video is driving on a snowy surface, isn't it? He didn't desactivate ESP... something is not right here !.. People say " we have to ACTIVATE absolutely ESP" others say " DESACTIVATE ESP when it snowing because ESP blocks the wheels and it could be very dangerous !
Someone told me about ESC technologie and ASR ,TC ,ABS.... I think most of people driving cars with new technology didn't know how to use it...!!!
@spy742 ESP is a tiered architecture. You can buy a car with ABS without ESP and this situation is same on other technologies to. ESP' s main duty is to monitor all of this systems and help to control the car. For an example ESP can find a pressure lost on a tire using ABS sensors . Its a superior technologie that uses all others. When driving with a tire chain or struggling in a swampy surface where you want to keep wheels rolling you have to turn off. In other situations allways must be ON.
@spy742 For all information and working principles of ESP you can look at BOSCH ESP web site ( bosch-esperience ) this site will answer all of your questions I think.

my good friend has a '10 Audi A4. We always test to see what it can do in the snow. We live where there are a lot of hills than can trip on the TC/ESP. The Quattro actually gets you up the hill faster with the ESP off. The ESP is useful on highways though where there are a lot of other cars. My verdict... ESP is helpful - but Quattro sometimes negates it (the ESP hardy ever comes on). Some vehicles though ABSOLUTELY need it the vast majority of the time.
yeah... i have esp on my vw... and i did this same test with my car and it did not climb with or without it on... your trying to ask a fwd car that weighs almost 3,000lbs to climb a hill of ice...
ESP is good for manuevering away from things, but about helping that Jag get up into the garage... it does not help you get 'unstuck'. It would cut the car's power not letting it to get any grip and would just keep you spinning
@Grifkylian - you are correct... as a matter of fact car manuals tell you that in deep snow you should disengage it because you need to spin the tires to get out.
Am I the only one that feels the 5th gear tests are unbelievably unfair in their testing? on the ESP test when he doesn't have the ESP on after swerving from the 2nd obstacle he doesnt even try to steer out of it till the car is 90 degrees out. and in the 4x4 rollover episode with the Range Rover the driver didn't swerve lane to lane like stated, he swerved like he wanted it to go over.
When the ESP is turned off he doesnt counter steer into the slide, he just keeps it locked hard right. Tiff is a great driver and this has to be a Bosch add as he isnt even trying with the electronic aids turned off.
No ofcourse not, it's an electronic device. U turn it off when u want to race or when ur stuck in snow and need to power ur way out. Keeping it on all the time is fine, in fact it's meant to be kept on at all times for your safety.
@vinehanger ok, i did turne it on each time i started the engine and i tested it, and it is taking turnes much more precise and stable. i think when there will be rain i would feel the stability much better. btw i have a VW Jetta fsi 2.0. thank you.
Glad to help. TC has saved my life countless times. Anything above 400 horsepower you need traction control because the power is too much for the road. Be careful in the rain, when traction control breaks one ur wheels in the rain the effect is often times very dramatic. Hard to explain but u will see when u drive. (Hint; just dont race in the rain!)
I haven't seen fifth gear, but from the few videos on youtube, I find Top Gear being much more enjoyable to watch, mainly because.. it's simply entertaining. I wouldn't say Fifth Gear is. Tiff and Vicky just seems like small children, where Jeremy, James and Richard are the grown ups, when they are in the cars.. Just MO ofc...
Don't know who is this driver but he is acting like idiot on uphill test and on slalom, like never before drive car on ice ... com on people , he just make big Busch commercial, thumb down :P
what does he say about the mercedes and toyota? can't understand it. sorry english is not my native language and i can barely understand british english.
@MrShdwX "It's easy to see why Mercedes reckon ESP cuts accidents by a third, while Toyota say by a half."
And no worries, English is my first language and I was having a really hard time figuring that part out. I kept replaying it over and over because I wanted to know what he said and then I scrolled down and saw others were having trouble too. But I finally was able to get it.
Aww.. ESP would have saved me a couple of weeks ago.
It was raining fairly heavily, I was doing about 50mph and then suddenly had to make a sharp left turn to avoid a collision. The rear wheels skidded out, I controlled it with some opposite lock but then I ended up sliding in the other direction (like tiff in this video) before coming to a stop at the other side of the road. Fortunately I didn't hit anything but if my car had ESP I wouldn't have ended up in the slide in the first place!
@JuanPapaNicolao naah not really because they make you go slower. They won't let you go right on the edge of control because bad drivers won't be able to handle it. But if you are a bad driver (depending on how hard the car is to drive fast) they can make you go faster, but for a professional it is better to avoid it for fast laps. Exept that it can preserve the tyres for longer races.
I think ESP, ABS & TCS are basically doing the same stuff, manufacurers team up with top gear to fool people you know! but generally i like the entertainment aspect of the test drive Jeremy! tanx alot mate!
@crabsallover esp not esc. it's a "elektronisches stabilitäts programm" or in english electronic stability program. and ABS is a "anti-blockier-system" or engl. antilock braking system.
What if the driver is more professional? can he safe that crash? hahaah TIFF must steer quicker, use left foot braking and maybe more throttle controling?hahaha
@swunt10 why need to brake one wheel at a time? throttle control+ counter steering would have saved that one. Dun say nobody can do it, u see those rally drivers? snow, gravel, wet, etc, tighter courses, slalom, they do it with no esp, no abs, no nothing, 4WD? how bout those 1960-1985 days? b4 audi brought in 4wd? idiot
@thepreme123 even rally drivers can't do that slalom with a speed of 70mph. if you ever watched rally you will also see that there are corners - a short strait pease of street and than the next corner. but if you in your car have to change the lane because of an animal and than change right back because of an other car on the other lane you can't keep you car from oversteer. thats why esp, that can keep your car from oversteer by brakng one wheel at a time.
WTH @ 7:09. He was trying to crash, no other way to explain it. You cannot yank the wheel like that and expect to remain in control. And on the second correction he hesitated way to long to correct. I think he was aiming for the barrier. Oh well.
@samnelso I think he was trying to demonstrate, with the subsequent contrast, how useful ESP is when obstacles are noticed last minute and so on. If he carefully planned his path from the outset to avoid each item, it would be rather pointless.
the hill part was rigged. with trac cntrl on he had a running start. he went into it at like 20mph. traction or no traction control, youre not getting uphill on ice from a dead start

in the first situation with ESP turned off, why don't he turns the wheel in the opposite side to counter the slide???I don't trust this electronic programs because when it's an urgent situation I try myself to stabilize the car and this ESP gets confused.....
ESP makes people push cars way way way past their limits, because they think they have an electronic safety net that will save them every time. Also a few cars i've been in driven fitted with ESP, with it turned off are running awful awful suspension. The only thing that makes the car handle properly, even at street speeds, is the ESP.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What I don't get is everyday cars with ESP/ TC OFF buttons. Removing driver aids will only make you slower, even if you are a very good driver. If your surname is Button or Hamilton removing the safety systems in something like a Ferrari F430 may save a second a lap. But for the rest of us in 'normal' cars Stability and Traction systems should be on permanentally. If you wanna go drifting buy something very old and RWD and find a muddy field.
If you know anything about driving physics, you'll know that what you have just said is quite stupid. Google friction circle, and you'll see that ESP can only decrease the level of mechanical grip. Additionally, ESP will do nothing but hurt you in some extremely low grip situations (smooth ice)
its just for fun you know... i usually turn off TC when i practice on ice, so when i got into a real situation, i am at least a little prepared. this preparation and TC normaly on already saved my day couple of time
It's wierd how he really floors it when he knew that if he floors it on the "slippery surface" he is going nowhere. Still he god damn floors it so hard that he goes backwards and does a burnout on the asphalt. Just so unnecessary
yea ..did u notice how when he demonstrating esp on the first try he was flooring it and didnt even counter steer but when it was supposedly on he went noticably slowe and drove really good and did everything rite ..thats why top gear is better....they dont ever do stupid shit
explanation starts at 8:40. ESP is ABS & TCS with more functionality. I assume you know how ABS works. ABS & TCS use wheel speed sensors to detects when the wheels arent spinning the right speed and apply the brakes gently, pulse them or reduce engine power if needed. in a fwd car for ex., if the front wheels spin faster than the rear, TCS will reduce engine power until you regain traction. In the TCS computer, it does what it can to make all 4 wheels go the same speed.
With ESP, most systems use the same brake, throttle & wheel speed sensors as ABS & TCS but adds steering angle, g-force, etc. If u brake & turn on ice and start to skid, ESP senses the rear wheels are going faster than the front & the steering angle is 30 deg. it can apply more brake to the rear while applying the right amt of brake to each front wheel until the car starts turning. A good ESP system does this almost instantly so it feels undramatic and natural
British never produced great cars but now they are pathetic... making front wheel drive Jag diesel is a flower on this grave.

Exept that it can preserve the tyres for longer races.

Great explanation of differences between ABS, TC and ESC (3 letters to save your life!)
crabsallover 1 year ago
@crabsallover esp not esc. it's a "elektronisches stabilitäts programm" or in english electronic stability program. and ABS is a "anti-blockier-system" or engl. antilock braking system.
swunt10 1 year ago
What if the driver is more professional? can he safe that crash? hahaah TIFF must steer quicker, use left foot braking and maybe more throttle controling?hahaha
thepreme123 1 year ago
@thepreme123 you can't brake one tire at a time moron.
swunt10 1 year ago
@swunt10 why need to brake one wheel at a time? throttle control+ counter steering would have saved that one. Dun say nobody can do it, u see those rally drivers? snow, gravel, wet, etc, tighter courses, slalom, they do it with no esp, no abs, no nothing, 4WD? how bout those 1960-1985 days? b4 audi brought in 4wd? idiot
thepreme123 1 year ago
@thepreme123 even rally drivers can't do that slalom with a speed of 70mph. if you ever watched rally you will also see that there are corners - a short strait pease of street and than the next corner. but if you in your car have to change the lane because of an animal and than change right back because of an other car on the other lane you can't keep you car from oversteer. thats why esp, that can keep your car from oversteer by brakng one wheel at a time.

my next car should be fitted with ESPN.

WTH @ 7:09. He was trying to crash, no other way to explain it. You cannot yank the wheel like that and expect to remain in control. And on the second correction he hesitated way to long to correct. I think he was aiming for the barrier. Oh well.

@samnelso thats how a normal driver might react when faced with a sudden avoidance situation
ethownzbh 11 months ago
@samnelso I think he was trying to demonstrate, with the subsequent contrast, how useful ESP is when obstacles are noticed last minute and so on. If he carefully planned his path from the outset to avoid each item, it would be rather pointless.

in the first situation with ESP turned off, why don't he turns the wheel in the opposite side to counter the slide???I don't trust this electronic programs because when it's an urgent situation I try myself to stabilize the car and this ESP gets confused.....

ESP makes people push cars way way way past their limits, because they think they have an electronic safety net that will save them every time. Also a few cars i've been in driven fitted with ESP, with it turned off are running awful awful suspension. The only thing that makes the car handle properly, even at street speeds, is the ESP.

KrisWales3 2 years ago
If you know anything about driving physics, you'll know that what you have just said is quite stupid. Google friction circle, and you'll see that ESP can only decrease the level of mechanical grip. Additionally, ESP will do nothing but hurt you in some extremely low grip situations (smooth ice)
theoriginalca7erham 2 years ago
its just for fun you know... i usually turn off TC when i practice on ice, so when i got into a real situation, i am at least a little prepared. this preparation and TC normaly on already saved my day couple of time

It's wierd how he really floors it when he knew that if he floors it on the "slippery surface" he is going nowhere. Still he god damn floors it so hard that he goes backwards and does a burnout on the asphalt. Just so unnecessary
:S
Znitso 2 years ago
When you drive from Asphalt to Ice the reduction in grip will alllow the revs to rise without applying any more throttle.
Its like when you are in neutral the engine revs much easier with only a light stroke of the pedal.
KrisWales3 2 years ago
I know, i know. Just saying that he might aswell have let off the pedal completely. Again, just saying.
Znitso 2 years ago
yea ..did u notice how when he demonstrating esp on the first try he was flooring it and didnt even counter steer but when it was supposedly on he went noticably slowe and drove really good and did everything rite ..thats why top gear is better....they dont ever do stupid shit

From this view, it look like, ESP is like God. It will drive you everywhere.
846524162 2 years ago
You mean it protects you from coming short. Neither God nor ESP drives you :P
dunti21 2 years ago
I said ''ESP is like God'' because I got that feeling from watching this video.
I personaly don't think so, because ESP is just help-product, it can't drive if a driver can't.

If he did ESP wouldn't be much help.
Same thing was when showing how traction control works, 'gently with the clutch' he said, judging by the noise, keeping pedal to the metal :)
MrBtfh 2 years ago
I'm sorry but he still didn't explain fully how ESP works...
NorkiddExo 2 years ago
explanation starts at 8:40. In the TCS computer, it does what it can to make all 4 wheels go the same speed.
areitu 2 years ago
With ESP, most systems use the same brake, throttle & wheel speed sensors as ABS & TCS but adds steering angle, g-force, etc. If u brake & turn on ice and start to skid, ESP senses the rear wheels are going faster than the front & the steering angle is 30 deg. it can apply more brake to the rear while applying the right amt of brake to each front wheel until the car starts turning. A good ESP system does this almost instantly so it feels undramatic and natural
