This unfortunate person sounds like paranoid schizophrenic . It's a purely organic disorder , and can be treated with antipsychotic medications . Your reactions however were totally both socially and clinically appropriate .
I once had a friend who would jump at any opportunity to tell anyone who would listen how miserable he was. At one point, I asked him "How goes it, man?" and he started spewing. I literally had to hold up my hand and say, "Stop. Stop it. I don't really care". Needless to say, we don't hang out much.

I totally understand. I do that when I don't feel like having a conversation with someone. I just complain and pity myself until they go away.

yeah, they're weird. It's fun how society made it polite to ask everyone "how are you". It just opens the door to so many unpleasant outcomes.
