I'd disprove of the passengers suing them if the ship went down by unforeseeable or uncontrollable means (such as a lightning strike or something) - but it was the total fault of their own captain, so yes, they deserve to be sued. They hired someone who put the lives of over 4000 people at risk. They also apparently employed a crew who didn't pay any attention or alert anyone to the fact that, hey, "the captain's drunk and steering us miles off course and into a rocky island".
