They were "too metal for the punk clubs and too punk for the metal clubs," but now they are incredibly famous. People still have the same attitude towards bands that are really worth listening to, but they get caught up in whatever "scene" they are supposed to be identified with.

I can see people argue here about true and fake metal, well here is the answer.

True Heavy Metal Subgenres:

Power, Heavy, Thrash, Death, Folk, Viking, Symphonic, Doom, (also elements of Heavy Metal Music; Speed, Melodic, Epic, etc)

Fake Metal genres:

Metalcore, nu, alternative, experimental, emo, rapcoe, rap-metal, black metal.

Groove Metal is so close to Metalcore so it's not Heavy enough.

Progressive Metal is not Heavy Metal enough because people there experiment music and use electro sound.
