There are drugs available to the military that reduces damage from radiation. Also certain foods can help, most people do not have access to these drugs and to not have a diet adapted to protect against radiation.

A fire broke out at a nuclear plant in Sweden recently, but they said it wasn't near the reactor and was in fact caused by a wet vacuum cleaner that got left around. Smells fishy, I live in Sweden.

As far as I know, DU is not very radioactive at all. It IS toxic, but just about as much as lead. DO NOT CONFUSE RADIATION WITH TOXICITY! This has nothing to do with the radiation levels in DU.

@Pete19782007 DU will not remain in the air indefinitely. DU may be toxic when breathed, meaning it shouldn't be used under the Hague Convention, but still, it is not radioactive. Lead and tungsten bullets will definitely do damage in the aerosol forms like DU, since breathing in metal is pretty much carcinogenic and dangerous however you split it. I may be open to birth defects caused by DU, but not by radiation from DU, since DU does not put out enough radiation to do ANYTHING!

You cannot make a nuke from this material but it is unstable and nuclear fission is going as a type of radioactive decay of Uranium with release of Radon and other radioactive fission products. Radon is a gas and comes to lungs. Pierre and Marie Curie died from from long-term exposure to Uranium. First victims of radiation they were.

Uranium is not naturally a heavily radioactive element, even DU. Most radioactive uranium would have already fissioned or decayed into other elements, with very small amounts left still good for fission. DU is the stuff they pull out enrichment, since it is not unstable enough to use in reactors or in bombs. DU has NOTHING to do with fission and nuclear waste coming out of plants or bombs. It is as radioactive as rocks.
@johntheactor A farther of my ex-wife is a geologist and he used to work in Kazakhstan at a factory to extract Uranium from ore. Despite they were not in a direct contact with the metal as it is extracted by acids and the solution is pumped out by hermetic systems, they were getting intensive deactivation treatment every day to wash out any dust and were using respirators also. I think, you never was holding a peace of the metal in hand. A Geiger counter gets crazy in proximity to it.

What I am concerned about is that people confuse the issue of nuclear power and DU. @Pete19782007 My stance is solely on the radioactivity danger posed by DU, and I do not deny its well known toxicity. My fear is that DU's low level radioactivity will be used to prevent investment in smart nuclear energy, and choke promising moves towards more efficient sources of energy, like the LFTR. Unfortunately, nuclear has gained a stigma through Fukushima and similar cases, and the DU debate is becoming intertwined without any meaningful reason, except that DU is tangentially related.

@Pete19782007 I would say that DU is not dangerous if respected like any number of poisons produced industrially, and not used in weapons. The toxicity alone should disqualify it by the Hague. Technically, my preferred source of nuclear energy is thorium, which does not need enrichment like uranium, but it will never happen, due to widespread public distrust of anything nuclear or distantly related.
Nuclear is not free, and nothing is. It just has the potential for greater efficiency and volume.

I would myself be wary of nuclear power in general but if the world wasn't in the hands of psychopaths then perhaps it's dangers could be controlled. I am no expert in the field of nuclear reactors, but through some online research, it seems that thorium reactors are significantly safer than uranium reactors, using passive safety instead of active systems to regulate reactor temperatures. It's pretty different, but the anti-nuclear sentiment makes it hard to promote.

If they are reportedly simple, then I will assume: either they work on some mechanism that no one has ever thought of (which is close to impossible) or because they are scams. if the atomic weight of DU is only about 10% higher than lead and the real weight is 67% more that means that it had to be compressed somehow because if not DU wouldnt be 67% heavyer, by DU there is no such thing as biological half life because it wont clear from the tissues especially not from the lungs, thats a fact You can look that up too.

@Pocok4 I would say that DU weapons will be eventually be abandoned by the military, but not because it is inhuman, but because the nature of warfare will change. As far as I am aware, war has never been moral, even if it can be fought on the moral high ground. Morality can be introduced to war, but never reconciled with it. As far as I know, DU is not very radioactive at all. It IS toxic, but just about as much as lead. DO NOT CONFUSE RADIATION WITH TOXICITY! This has nothing to do with the radiation levels in DU.

@Pete19782007 DU will not remain in the air indefinitely. DU may be toxic when breathed, meaning it shouldn't be used under the Hague Convention, but still, it is not radioactive. Lead and tungsten bullets will definitely do damage in the aerosol forms like DU, since breathing in metal is pretty much carcinogenic and dangerous however you split it. I may be open to birth defects caused by DU, but not by radiation from DU, since DU does not put out enough radiation to do ANYTHING!

You cannot make a nuke from this material but it is unstable and nuclear fission is going as a type of radioactive decay of Uranium with release of Radon and other radioactive fission products. Radon is a gas and comes to lungs. Pierre and Marie Curie died from from long-term exposure to Uranium. First victims of radiation they were.

Uranium is not naturally a heavily radioactive element, even DU. Most radioactive uranium would have already fissioned or decayed into other elements, with very small amounts left still good for fission. DU is the stuff they pull out enrichment, since it is not unstable enough to use in reactors or in bombs. DU has NOTHING to do with fission and nuclear waste coming out of plants or bombs. It is as radioactive as rocks.

@johntheactor A farther of my ex-wife is a geologist and he used to work in Kazakhstan at a factory to extract Uranium from ore. Despite they were not in a direct contact with the metal as it is extracted by acids and the solution is pumped out by hermetic systems, they were getting intensive deactivation treatment every day to wash out any dust and were using respirators also. I think, you never was holding a peace of the metal in hand. A Geiger counter gets crazy in proximity to it.

What I am concerned about is that people confuse the issue of nuclear power and DU. DU is not a valid argument against the improvement and development of new nuclear energy technologies, which have the capacity to greatly improve the quality of human life, allowing us to focus on improving the world.

@Pete19782007 My stance is solely on the radioactivity danger posed by DU, and I do not deny its well known toxicity. My fear is that DU's low level radioactivity will be used to prevent investment in smart nuclear energy, and choke promising moves towards more efficient sources of energy, like the LFTR. Unfortunately, nuclear has gained a stigma through Fukushima and similar cases, and the DU debate is becoming intertwined without any meaningful reason, except that DU is tangentially related.

@Pete19782007 I would say that DU is not dangerous if respected like any number of poisons produced industrially, and not used in weapons. The toxicity alone should disqualify it by the Hague. Technically, my preferred source of nuclear energy is thorium, which does not need enrichment like uranium, but it will never happen, due to widespread public distrust of anything nuclear or distantly related.
Nuclear is not free, and nothing is. It just has the potential for greater efficiency and volume.

I would myself be wary of nuclear power in general but if the world wasn't in the hands of psychopaths then perhaps it's dangers could be controlled. I was referring to free energy devices (a concept I've seen mentioned a few times when viewing 9/11 videos etc - related to Tesla I think and not literally free but very cheap I believe). I don't know a lot about it.

I am no expert in the field of nuclear reactors, but through some online research, it seems that thorium reactors are significantly safer than uranium reactors, using passive safety instead of active systems to regulate reactor temperatures. It's pretty different, but the anti-nuclear sentiment makes it hard to promote.

If they are reportedly simple, then I will assume: either they work on some mechanism that no one has ever thought of (which is close to impossible) or because they are scams. I doubt things which I cannot at least partially understand through my own knowledge.

The theory is Tesla thought of the mechanism and it was covered up by people wanting to sell other sources of energy I think but like I say I'm not very familiar with it all yet and I've never tried to experiment with it myself. @Pocok4 It is not near as radioactive as people say, and you don't need radiation to cause mutation (hell, even morning sickness medication has caused terrible and debilitating birth defects: thalidomide). Also, DU is a HEAVY metal, therefore it will fall out of the air after the initial pyrophoric cloud stops burning. ANY metal will can cause cancer when breathed in. DU has a half life of billions of years, therefore it puts out minuscule radiation, since radiation is inversely proportional.

Radiation is about proximity and half life. Radiation is caused by decay of atoms, therefore, uranium, with a half life of 4.5x10^6 years, has extremely low radiation levels, radiating slowly for billions of years instead of things like I-131, radiate away half their mass in 8 days.

I saw geiger counters wich were pretty nervous in proximity of DU dust, also if You inhale the nano DU dust it doesent matter how little it will radiate alpha or beta particles because it will be point blank into your tissues and DNA and it will give You cancer, that simple.

@Pocok4 Metal density cannot be artificially spiked, because compression of that magnitude for crystalline solids would result in some exotic plasma material or something of the sort. It is only that for equivalent number of atoms, it is literally heavier, by about 67%.
Inhalation and ingestion are the ONLY ways that DU is dangerous radiologically. Biological half life is about 15 days, and every 15 days succeeding, the effect decreases by half, to become vanishingly small.

if the atomic weight of DU is only about 10% higher than lead and the real weight is 67% more that means that it had to be compressed somehow because if not DU wouldnt be 67% heavyer, by DU there is no such thing as biological half life because it wont clear from the tissues especially not from the lungs, thats a fact You can look that up too.

@Pocok4 I would say that DU weapons will be eventually be abandoned by the military, but not because it is inhuman, but because the nature of warfare will change. As far as I am aware, war has never been moral, even if it can be fought on the moral high ground. Morality can be introduced to war, but never reconciled with it. DU may be a sub-optimal option for human health, but it is what was most effective (for its intended role in anti-armor), therefore it was used. Hence my dislike of war.

I knew a Navy Corp Man,(Medic to the Marines),who fought in the first War In Iraq. 1991-1992. When riding in the Amtrak AAV,he sat on top of the DU Rounds all the time. Marines sat in all the normal positions. You'd think,(Given the information on this show),that this guy's nads would've cooked off by now. He hasn't had cancer or any illness from this at all. I knew a Tanker who fired DU rounds right through Iraqi Tanks like a hot knife through butter all day and night for weeks. Never an issue

It may possibly be an "organic" form, using both definitions of this term. But unless a man is wounded or hereditarily anemic, there is very little reason for adding iron to a man's diet beyond what is available in the occasional Beef Steak or Sandwich.
Women fall into the same catagory once they go through their "changes" later in life.

@PyR0Star If the cereal has any metal in it it should follow the magnet without needing water. But I don't see how metal would be very harmful, one of the heavy metals maybe. It could be iron. I can't remember if that is attracted by magnets.
