This must be influenced by Blind Willie Johnson. His "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground" was included on the Voyager Golden Record, sent into space with the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. The song is also used in Pasolini's The Gospel According to St Matthew; Walk the Line, a biopic of country singer Johnny Cash; Ry Cooder, who based his soundtrack to Paris, Texas on it described it as "the most soulful, transcendent piece in all American music." Bruce covers a BWJ song 'If I Had My Way'.
I went to see Springsteen during this tour and there was definitely a "dissapointed" feeling in the audience after this version of Born in the USA. I felt the same way.
i think in his later years he really wanted to move away from the born in the usa version on the album due to the whole regan using it. in an interview with a french man (it was on youtube but i cant find it now) he says about how originally when he wrote this song this was what he had in mind and what he played, but when he went into the studio he changed it to the studio version due to producers demands.
Bruce springsteen never wrote born in the usa with the intent of it being a patriotic song. he wrote it as a narrative of how he felt about the united states. and I think what we are probably seeing is his changing views of the country with the changing of the song.
my forever example

@pekoe67 I thought exactly the same, the similarities in the openings are uncanny.
