I'm a huge Joe Strummer fan but I've read many books and watched many clash documentaries to know that he was a bit of an arsehole when he was younger and you could argue he single handedly forced The Clash apart but I love him all the more cos he was only human and he made up for it in his later life with some beautiful music. Never has a more true spirit lived R.I.P
The music of the Clash literally changed my life as a 17-year-old Catholic School boy growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Saw them three times: At the Hollywood Palladium twice with The English Beat in '83, and with The Who at the Coliseum in '84. To all you young people who are just discovering them: Good on ya. Joe was more than a rebel without a cause, he was a cause that was rebellious.
Why did he have to go? I'm 16, and I recently discovered The Clash, and fell completely in love with their music. At first, I didn't really know anything about the band themselves, I just knew that I loved their songs... then I went on Wikipedia, and found out that Joe was not only dead, but had died when I was eight. It was like a family member had died and no one had told me, I was completely heartbroken!
@awsomeclown007 lol why do people always say im 14 or 12 or whatever and "guess what!? hes my hero" or "guess what? im 12 and i love this band" sorry im not trying to rag on you but i just hear people say it alot and i kinda think wtf. but no offence man!
i say, that was weed at the end. light ip up for joe. truly, one of my heroes, and i avoid designating anyone outside of my inner circle as one of my heroes.
ok so is he trying to say that talking about a songs message is in some way protentius? well maybe but how is the "theme" worse? surely theres nothing wrong with a song having a "theme"!?
@kevindlinc Im from London and i'd say he soundslike he's got the accent of someone who lives in a London suburb. Although I must admit, he's got quite a posh tone compared to your average suburban cockney. My guess is County Surrey or Middlesex, despite the fact he lived all over the country.
madtwatter88 = wot a pussyhole who doesn't understand real music & will never understand what joe is an absolute LEGEND!! their will never be another joe...
@madtwatter88 i would love nothing more than to meet you in person and show you the pure hatred i have for you, but since it wont happen (unless its your unluckiest day) i wish a slow early and excruciating death on you and your loved ones
@madtwatter88 you, sir are the biggest douch in all of youtube. i believe that everybody gets to have an opinion, but you should be thrown in a prison for having souch stupid ones. i bet you think your the shit, but id love to hear anything that you could write, and if its half as good as anything writtin by Joe, well then i will not only apologize but ill buy you a steak.
Joe seemed like such a pleasant real person. Hope he's keeping it real up there. I just missed out on The Clash as I was growing up, just a year or two before my passion for music began. I think I really missed out, but what a wonderful legacy they left.
i`m lucky enough to be romanian, all that we got here about the punk in uk was the music, i found inbetween about this issues between the fans of the pistols and the clash, well, it`s obvious that strummer and lyndon are very diferent characters, what can i say, thats fine, if i had known about details outside their music, perhaps i was now another sarcastic person pointing at rotten john, but as i said ignorance was a bless for me, and their music was enough back then (still is)...
I been listening to The Clash for over 30 years now and they still move me to this day. Im very glad a youngman your age is loving the music and the getting the "message".
Im only 24 and didnt get into the clash until after joes death.... when i listen to clash songs and watch clips of joe, i have to keep remembering myself that joes dead. R.I.P. Never forgotten x
Joe gave this London boy a raison d'etre introduced me to the injustice going on around me, met him once on a bus going down Fulham palace road to see Souxsie and the banshees, he always had time for his fans they broke the mould.
Why Mr. Mellor, I am rather fond of your socks :P. I love him, 'live or dead. He was an inspiration to me, and lots of others. RIP John/Woody/Joe :) xx
being inspired is basically good information. strummer says he was inspired to write the lyrics of this album by the music...should we take it from this that he had no simultaneous lyrical ideas when the music 'came to him'? and if the music didnt come to him, but was hammered over the anvil of umpteen sessions, what exactly do we take these songs for? i must hear the tunes he's on about under the tree there.
