  • GO SIDNEY!!! Yeah. this dude had to put up with a lot of shit while maintaining and projecting dignified roles for black people.

  • I think he is a class act... He "doesn't think of himself as a "colored" man but rather, as a man," which was a quote from him in the movie Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. I wish we all could do that...get past our skin colors and just be accepted as people.

  • I love this man. He is a complete and total class act. Today's actors can learn from Mr Potier. He is a Caribbean King. Still gorgeous!

  • You know how those crackers are, vengeance is mine saith the lord. You still need to push the envelop and live with an abundance of love in your heart.

  • he has such a regal way about him

  • Im doing a report on this. This video kinda saved my life because i am able to explain Mr. Poitier's personality.

  • he did not came from jamaica, he came from Cat Island, Bahamas

  • Mr. Poitier has a rich vocabulary. It makes what he is saying much more vivid and drives home the point without question.

  • This brilliant man came to our states from the Jamaican Islands and taught himself to read and self-educated himself.

  • i love that movie to sir with love

  • Anyone impressed by this actor should take the time to read his Autobiography - it is a spellbinding piece of work.

  • It sure is! Great reading!

  • Classy black man...his most shining character, and the one that's earned him the most cool points, is that of Detective BVirgil Tibbs in the film 'In the heat of the night' contd remember sarg 205!!

  • Classy MAN!

  • Oprah represents all races. She works w/& brings experts of all backgrounds on her show. I think sometimes you have to accept the question as a reality & not feel it's A RACE card. Oprah doesn't need to play a RACE card if you think about it. She's paid her dues and earned her success-so the race card is DEAD for her b/c she has all her own avenues. Now Sidney was a director/Producer of films w/ strong Black casts in a time of Blatant racism. So that's just a realistic question/curiosity.

  • Sidney is true class and an ultimate actor and statesman respected by everyone. Oprah on the other hand is just "too much" but hats off to her success although I can't stand listening to her! haha.

  • But I'm not talking about every show. I'm talking about this interview, this statement right here. How do u consider this as playing the race card? I agree that in some cases the "race card" or issue is used and abused. Just not here.

We can not ERASE the past. Particularly where here in the states, the past feels so CURRENT. We still have many racial prejudices (on both sides) to work out. But this, was just a reflection of how bad things were some years ago, even for an icon.

  • In what way is this playing the race card? She simply asked him what it was like being the only black man on the set during that time period. She did not say let him off a double murder because he was poor and deprived as a child.

  • That there is a real MAN.

If all you did was watch and listen to current popTV/radio/ghettospeak, etc it would appear completely as though real men -black or white- don't exist and arn't made anymore. What are we going to do when these old guys are gone? Who is going to take their place, fill their shoes?

  • You seriously need to get your facts straight and take into consideration that you come off as a racist.

And btw, when there truly is equality in this land, then and only then will a thank you from blacks to whites be justified.

Until then, blacks owe whites NOTHING.

  • Almost all of the prblems you bring up stem from what whites have done to blacks. It is a known fact that slaves were bred and seperated from their families and even turned against each other. That is one of the main reasons to this day there is little to no black unity, lots of bastard families and lots of violence. that slave mentality is still very strong.

  • "whereas blacks never invented a thing in this world."

Alexander Miles invented the elevator. Charles Drew developed blood banks.

Garret Morgan developed the gas mask.

Be careful about the comments you make.

  • Don't forget Granville Woods, the "black Thomas Edison." Given that praise by caucasions. Being Granville Woods should have been high praise enough! My fourth grader is just learning this as a "white" kid. It's the white (European) man's spin on history. So much will have to be rewritten!

    JM : )

  • Garrett Morgan also invented the Traffic Light - just a tidbit.

  • "Can't these two rich blacks state how kind and generous whites have been with them?"

That's not the issue here. The issue is being looked down upon by whites and rising above this condescension through hard work.

  • there'll never be another poitier...

  • yes there will. there will be many more.

  • A true pioneer.
