One of my conductors did the same thing but with a scrap violin that was going to be thrown out anyway for a crack in the back. They re-varnished it and re-strung it for the joke. Enhanced the effect too since it sounded quite bad which meant everyone felt .

I play violin myself and know what beautiful instruments they are, but at a time a violin can be so run down, you can either pay hundreds to have it repaired or you can (like most) just buy a new one and trash the other. This teacher seems like an great teacher to be able to do something like this for his students I don't know why you expect a school orchestra to be professionals, but you are overreacting to me.

I'm a middle school orchestra teacher...I would definitely do this stunt. Thanks for the idea. The best I did before was fall off the stage and all the kids laughed at me. Only I didn't try to fall.
