My parents had the 78rpm of the song. My father absolutely loved Iltalian cinema. This is the very first song I ever danced to; Thank you for posting htis, brings back a rush of memories. After frantically trying to work out what this song wes by watching cinema Paradisio, I heard the Pink Martini cover and got the original. But the images are beyond words.
Melodrama master Alberto Lattuada with on of the most beautfull film actresses of all time - Silvana Mangano. She dances, erotic, Brazilian rhythm in the song "El Negro Zumbon" worldwide success in the 1950s. Raimundo Balby(Penalva-Maranhão-Brazil).
@gjc866 hehe pink martini brought me here too from their kickass show in toronto , i knew i heard that guitar solo before in Frontier Psychiatrist but I thought it was an original!
One would think the film would be released on the merit that Sophia Loren works s waitress in the Blue Grotto Cafe where Silvana works at before she becomes an nun.
Istill have the 78 record of this song,Non Dementicar is on the revers side,my older brother played i to death. I fell i love with her playing two roles in one film. The constant Penelope and the temptress Cerci In glorious Technicolor all in bright green. Luring Kirk Douglas to his doom in Ulysses! Some one mentioned her in Ben Hur ,although they do look alike, that's Haya Harett in Ben Hur. Silvana remained beautiful even in her last film ,that science fiction disaster her husband made ,Dune!

So this is the original version? It's great! There is also a Dutch song from the same era - Mama el Baión by Maria Zamora - that sounds almost exactly the same.
I saw Anna as I was in the throes of puberty (no age restrictions in the early 1950s) and the tune of El Bayon has been rattling around in my mind since then.
one of the best mlodies for the guitar,I learnt to play the guitar because of this melody, what a great melody,Thanks ANNA I play this very well on the guitar
Silvana's great beauty and lack of self-consciousness gives this clip a lot of charm. Her simple unmodulated singing voice undoctored by electronic gadgetry gives it the sound of live performance. There is of course the well textured Zone 5 photography that plays well on light and shadows. All these make up for her somewhat cloven-footed and clumsy dancing (hard to move when a lady is so well-equipped) which I find appealing. And that music, that beat, resonates of the exotic and exciting.
Silvana won my heart as the virtuous and loyal Penelope in Ulysses but this is sooo verrry interesting. She certainly was my favorite among the female actress Italian invaders of Hollywood in the '50s.
OK, so someday somebody needs to make a new movie of a character watching the people in "Cinema Paradiso" watching this scene, then watching Nanni Moretti watching the same dance on TV in "Caro Diario", and then in real life, people can sit in a theater and watch this new film of someone watching two movies in which other people watch this scene.

I first saw this film clip in the movie "Cinema Paradiso" years ago & was so captivated by it! The song was very familiar, I probably heard it when I was a young boy. The song sequence was well shot and lit for an old movie....and the singer/actress was sexy too! I was searching for the song's name & film for a long time. Years later I heard the song in a CD shop & immediately asked for the album. It was "Hang on Little Tomato" by Pink Martini & I bought it. Thank you for posting the video!
You could try the track PINK MARTINI : a couple of years ago ( 2004 ?) this american band recorded this song in a record called 'Hang on little tomato" ( quite nice version). Tab of this record probably easier to find. Good luck
in a certain way; Nanni Moretti in that movie is a dance-addicted...he has always had the dream of learning to dance, not just watch people do it...in that scene he is in a public bar, while in an old tv on the wall he sees the scene from Anna, and starts nodding his head and moving the arms following the music...
I just watched Ben Hur on Turner Classic movies. That was her and she was also in Barabbas with Anthony Quinn. She was married to Dino Delaurentis until her death even though they no longer lived together. He controlled her career which looks like, ended early.
I love this, after I saw the clip in "Cinema Paradiso." I am still having an awful time finding a zone-correct DVD of the movie. I bought a CD of it, and my 8-year-old daughter and I sing and dance to it.
It's the best video clip ever placed on You Tube; I remember the song was a big hit in the early 50's in many different versions, as was the custom then
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To whomever took down this video; I hope someone rapes and murders your daughters and mother. I hope they get cancer, too. You piece of sanctimonious shit.
I also remember this from "Cinema Paradiso". It's a wonderful song, shot so expertly too. Two questions, though:
1) Did the original film have these awkward, obvious cuts here, where the soundtrack is noticeably out of synch?
2) Is that also Silvana at the start of the scene dressed in a nun's habit? If so, what's the story?? Did she go from being a very sexy nightclub singer to being a nun? (With this scene being a flashback to her previous life...?)
This song is taken exactly from the original film. This copy is the one broadcasted at Rai Tre Italian channel. This scene is a flashback to her previous life..
¡¡¡Cuánta sensibilidad!!!!...¡¡¡Cuánta belleza!!!...¡¡¡Qué hermosura!!!...¡¡¡Qué movimientos!!!...¡¡¡Qué cuerpo!!!..¡¡¡Qué sonrisa!!! ¡¡¡Todo natural!!! Desde que la ví en Cinema Paraíso quise encontrarla y aquí está llena de frescura...Thanks so much Jack. Oscar desde Buenos Aires.
Compañero y amigo!!! Hago también desde Bs. As. mias tus palabras.
As. famoso otro Baión.
I remember this movie and always wished I could see it again. I was 13yrs old and loved this song and the movie itself. Just came across this video and I'm thriled to death. will put it in favorites
hmmm you would think she would be able to better pronounce Spanish given she's Italian. Nice song regardless.

Also bitte, wer kann mir helfen ???
LG

I love this, after I saw the clip in "Cinema Paradiso." I am still having an awful time finding a zone-correct DVD of the movie. I bought a CD of it, and my 8-year-old daughter and I sing and dance to it.

It's the best video clip ever placed on You Tube; I remember the song was a big hit in the early 50's in many different versions, as was the custom then

Compañero y amigo!!! Hago también desde Bs. As. mias tus palabras.

As. famoso otro Baión.
