Thank you to everyone for the support of this new legislation. Although California Prop 2 creates a minimal improvement in the lives of factory farm animals, it proves that people recognize the need for compassion to animals.
There is absolutely zero persuasive evidence that passage of prop 2 will lead to the importation of eggs or pork from Mexico- transportation costs are simply too high. Since the chickens would have enough space to flap their wings & the pigs and baby cows enough room to actually turn around in their pens, the cost increase is negligible relative to sensible animal welfare reforms.
Based on what? Why would California import eggs and pork from out of state when the transportation would make the cost of these items skyrocket? Corn feed is grown in California, not Mexico. Egg producers aren't going to truck feed to Mexico and then truck eggs back to California. That's also too expensive. The egg industry's own expert economist stated in a January 2006 study that the cost to produce eggs in a cage-free system right here in California would be less than a penny per egg.
