  • "Highly Refined Pirates" is great, but this is still so raw/punk energetic. It always gets me going even if I'm dragging.

  • i still love these guys as much as i did the day i first heard em, tho i gotta say OMNI was a huge step backwards. I know all musicians gotta evolve, but i really didnt like 90% of that recording. lemurs and absynthe will forever remain their greatest songs in my book.

  • The recording is crappy, but the band is great. This music is way more deep than the TOTP crap big labels try to feed us.

IMHO this is one of their best songs.

  • Подстригся, побрился, красавчик! <3

  • Dave's playing like he's still in Botch.

    Love it.

  • Wow this is awesome! I wish I found out about this band sooner. I heard of them, but never checked out their music.

  • Dave's McCarty goldtop guitar is so dope.

  • @evanfrikkenjones well he has a masters degree in trade so i would say not a day younger than 24.

  • he looks so creepy without hair, hahah, gives them no character xp

  • I preferred it, it made them look like they didn't need an image to sell records. :P

  • @Rob30 if youve listened to any of theyre music, you can hear that they clearly dont need an image to sell records. the only image theyve ever harbored in my eyes is a group of incredibly talented musicians. mountain men, or not they have always been true to their established sound.

  • @miceinberlin I don't know about that. I still think they're great, but I preferred when Jake didn't wear a jesus beard and skinny jeans.

  • @atdi19 that's so childish. grow up.

  • Audio Quality is good even though it fuzzes out ever once and a while. Still good though. <(") <========= Penguin lol.

  • I agree, very good point.

  • DAVE IS GOD!

  • i agree!

  • Lol they were little noobs now look at them amazing!!!

  • totally not noobs! have you ever heard dave's work with botch? friggin amazing.

  • botch is so good

  • Minus the Bear is soooo good! Great post! I love their guitar player's style. Very unique and just downright pretty to listen to.

  • i heard they hate played this song because its requested so often

  • poop

  • awesome, its one of my favorites...

  • this song is so fucking good, they need to use it in tours. i saw them, and i'd rather see them play this than something like the fix or houston we have uh-oh. so good.

  • u suck bubble fag!

  • i just saw them last night, the lead singer, has long hair and a beard now, this is strange, and they didnt play this song either.

  • Its a really old one from their first EP

  • well this is an older video.

  • she licks the paper slow.. twice!!

  • They seem to have more energy in this video than any other video on youtube.

  • I have seen Minus the Bear five times and they have yet to play this song, and its my favorite. D:

  • Awesome..can't wait to see these guys here in Chicago on the 17th!!

  • roll one for me =)

  • This is a really well-shot video, nice angles. It's interesting to see a live show shot with more than one camera.

  • I wish they would come some where around toledo. I WANT TO SEE THEM IN CONCERT SO BAD1

    !!!!

  • haha! i did and it was awesome, so suck it

  • this band is amazing. im always tryin to figure out what makes them stand out from everyone. like is it the vocals, the deep meaingful lyrics, erins complex drums,or of course everyones fav: daves guitar style somthing that would blow everyone away if they had the chanch to hear it.

  • i know what you mean, i think it is everything you listed on top of the quantity of tapping. It produces such fresh and interesting sound, best band ever!

  • I saw them in phili and i was blown away the only thing i was pissed about was that they didnt play this song this is my favorite one and does any1 no why their old keyboard player left? eather way they still are amazing and put any band who trys to right real lyrics that actually means something to shame and there instamental parts are just pefect and erin tats drumming is spot on everytime

  • Matt Bayles left the band to pursue his producing/engineering career.

  • he still produces their stuff. i dont know about the new record cause of the label change. the new guy does harmonies and everybody likes harmonies, even moms.

  • Yeah don't don't worry though, Alex is the man. He absolutely owns on the synth, and is also a very good singer.

  • He's really nice too, I met him last time they were in Chicago.

  • Weird to see them playing a "small" show again.

  • This is my favorite Minus The Bear song, and throughout the three times I've seen them, they never played it. :[

  • They played this in Chicago about 2 months ago, I was really surprised, they also played "we are not a football team.

  • 1:49-2:32 = sex

  • minus the bear is beyond awesome =] i want to see them so bad

  • Any one know what drum machine Mat used and if Alex uses the same one? My brother and the lead guitarist of his band are starting a side project Indy stile and they want to use a drum machine.

  • Minus The Bear is so damn good! I absolutely love this band. Another great Seattle band in a long line of unique and amazingly creative indie bands. I saw them at the Showbox a month ago and they were so incredible live. I can't say enough good things about this band. In a world of copycat generic lifeless bands with no heart and shit lyrics, MTB stands way out.

  • MTB owns.

  • I agree. MTB is one of the best little-known bands in existence right now. They're amazing musically, lyrically and performance-wise too.

  • why do people have to bash music alllll the time

    YAWN this shit gets old.

its you tube. its a band.

its good music. get over it, stop insulting people you dont know via internet and just chill out and do your thing.

MTB are good listening to. we dont need to compare them to every other band out there.

get iccccceeeeyyyyy and chilll to fuckin planet of ice.

cause its a really chill album to make babies to.

get off your computer screens and give it a try... meeeehhhh

  • FINGER TAPPING GOODNESS!@ <3

  • this could be the greatest video i've ever seen. good job rob30.

  • yo redshaftedficker i like malmsteen and MTB they are 2 completely genres of music and Minus the Bear does make beautiful music and they're not emo at all MCR and Senses fail is emo

  • I should delete that comment... but I'll let people berate you for your examples.

  • This is the rise of straight edge music!!! He has the right to criticize w/e he likes. I do agree whats the point of watching the video of the band you don't like.

  • Is it possible that these guys have come to save music? I sure hope so, I haven't heard music like this in so long, its good to see a band do something DIFFERENT nowadays huh?

  • i agree with renegade doctor

dont people have better things to do? hah

  • "Planet of Ice" is my album of the year candidate. There has been a lot of great music out this year and they are near the top that list. Good stuff.

  • I agree. I love MTB. "Planet of Ice" by MTB and "Wincing The Night Away" by The Shins, were two of the best albums I bought in 2007. I love a good creative and unique rock band.

  • I'm all for critical review, but you do have to understand that you're hounding for complexity from a band that writes pop songs. I like Minus the Bear because they're fun. If I was an avid Miles Davis fan, and was looking for some mind engaging jazz, I wouldn't be expecting it from a band whose main themes are women and booze. I also wouldn't expect a band that has song titles inspired by SeaLab 2021 to be anywhere near as demiurgic as Steve Reich.

  • You've got a point when it comes to Miles and Reich however I mentioned other artists such as Shuggie and The Chameleons that do have pop-like sensibilities about them for sure. At least you can constructively explain your reasons for liking Minus without being an insecure prick about it. Time will tell if these guys will move onto a more creative level. I doubt it but if they do, I'll buy their album for sure.

  • Excuse me? Are you serious? Don't worry pal, no one is trying to convert you. You don't need to buy their album "if and when" they improve in your estimation. If Minus the Bear ever reaches whatever level of creativity and sophistication that YOU require, I am certain that the majority of their fans will lose interest. Why don't you go and be a pretentious fuck elsewhere...

  • Oh, I'm a "pretentious fuck" now since I expect quality out of a band that could actually take what they are doing to a much more creative level. Do I expect someone like My Chemical Romance etc. etc. to make a mindblowing album? No, but MTB could potentially do that. At that point I guess you would have moved onto whatever some little boyfriend of yours told you was going to be "the next best thing." Go shampoo your crotch.

  • Tasteful. Well, I am sure that your underhanded compliments and scathing critiques on youtube is exactly what these guys need in order to make a "mindblowing album". Face it pal, you're a joke. You know what they say, those who can...do; those who can't...critique.

  • MTB doesn't give a fuck what I think about them, you half assed hairlip. Your shit must come out smelling like the best of colognes due to you never critiqueing an artist/band. If so, you'd have Malmsteen right close to your beloved MTB albums. Get a clue, douche.

  • hahaha...whatever.

  • why are you watching a video of a band you seem to hate, and why comment on it in a negative way, when you know you are getting people mad, like I just don't understand it.

  • Youtube is the place where angry, cowardish people come to vent their ire without actually coming in any contact with people. They like to watch things they don't like simply to get angry. It's weird but I know loads of people who do it. Any angry comment is always exaggerated to get a bit of reaction. It's a bit attention seeking. But they can do it if they like. I'm not one to judge plus it provides hours of fun reading time for spectators.

  • I agree. There are plenty of bands I hate with a passion and feel MTB wipes the floor with their shit music, but you won't find me looking up their videos and talking shit. It's a waste of time.

  • You're quite right. Nice to hear someone talking sense on this website.

  • Steve Reich, Miles Davis, Atheist, Jackson C. Frank, Fuehler, Chameleons UK, Botch, Wynn Stewart, Ornette Coleman, Shuggie Otis, etc.

  • I can see where you're going, but I don't understand where you're coming from. MTB does write some musically complex songs, at least in terms of the technical ability required to play many of them(this one inclusive), which is what got many of us to like them. Dave Knudson's double handed fingertapping is no joke.

PS - Dave Knudson, the guitarist I just referred to, was/is in Botch....can I assume that was prior knowledge on your part or laugh at the coincidence?

  • ive listed to all of these artists, the only person/band i can think of in there thats better (although completely different) is Davis, but seriously, Botch is Knudson's old band... dont criticize bands you dont like on the internet or you'll get flamed. simple.

  • Yeah, I just found out from you and your scholarly advice about Botch--a great band that I saw when you were in pampers. Thanks for your help.

  • Guys in their early 30s playing to kids in their teens and early 20s = Minus The Bear. About as inspiring as a kid being forced to play the recorder in 3rd grade music class. Emo w/ a little post rock is all that they're doing guys. Challenge yourselves a little bit by looking for more interesting/original tunes and you'll see why they're donkey balls.

  • what do you listen to?

  • ha ha ha your an idiot what do you think is more intersting and original ???? Obviously your a dumbass and cant understand their music . . .their age has nothing to do with their music . . . please just go criticize the shit you listen to before judging a band who is far more unique than the crap you listen to

  • If you had listened to a fourth of those artists I mentioned I'd be surprised.

  • (Redshatedflicker)Be surprised than man...cause I've heard most of them I love Ornette Coleman and I've been listening to Miles Davis since High school. I'm going to check out Shuggie Otis after i type this. (and I'm not going to bash it if I don't like it like you did with this) open you mind bro!music is fun it doesn't have to be amazingly progressive to to be amazing! Minus the Bear Rocks!!

  • Go listen to Arcade Fire and shampoo yourself. You'll feel much more r-e-l-a-x-e-d.

  • your dumb as shit.... for all the shit talkers out there... heres what you do post a video of your band playing better music and ill agree with you. tell then shut the fuck up and geta life..

  • i need to see this song live! sdklhfdskfds

im never gonna see it live :\ with their new album and stuff they'll never add this song to the set list. sdkfhdsfhdsf AH :P

  • I've seen them twice and this is the only song I still need to hear live! It's my favourite one by them.. When I heard this song for the first time it definitely changed my perspective on music.. it was pretty inspiring.

  • i don't think the lyrics are bad: what would you think when you are in some club and drunk and you would watch a beautiful woman, no metaphors, just straight thoughts, that's what is told! I love this song!

  • amazing song, or "puuuuta que pariu meu irmao! que banda foda!"

  • this song has the worst lyrics in history, still a good song though

  • Hardly. Try any of Fergies songs. And shitty music to back them up.

These aren't the best lyrics, and I'm not a smoker. But it doesnt even matter with the song rocking as hard as it does.

  • Yea, I do not smoke either, actually allergic to cigarette smoke.. and a lil too young to do so anyways.

But i love what he does with the lyrics, reason being is just because its HOW he describes everything, its just.. something worth listening to. so yea, just my thoughts :D

  • I wish the kept more songs like this in the rotation...the need to mix more of the old stuff in to their sets....no matter what...their shows are incredible though.

  • i love these guys. agreed every song is amazing.

  • This band kicks so much ass. I saw them live and they blew me away.

  • MINUS THE BEAR!! yep. Perfect, every songs so damn good..

  • its a shame that matt bayles isnt more in the band

  • Matt Bayles is no longer in the band, if that's what you meant.

  • dude seriously.. this band .. every song is like an amazing song.., ive never seen any band like this that fits my tastes sooooo well.. minus the bear for president in 08

  • fuckin lemurs. one of the finest mtb songs. yeeeeeee

  • highly refined pirates is such a great album
